December 29th, 2016:
On 12/29 and 12/30, we took a trip to Upstate New York to Railfan the Upper River Line, The Selkirk Sub, and the Mohawk Sub. And this trip probably goes down as our BEST EVER trip to Upstate NY!! We sure had what you could call a foreign power invasion on this trip! And to top off all the great catches, we got tons of beautiful snow shots, and we got one last chance to say goodbye to an old friend... the C40-8.
We got up to Saugerties NY Around 8:30am, and pretty soon after Q273 came NB through the Blizzard. Following was Q161 and Q003. We caught Q161 at CP-102, where he met K610 with a UP leader. We got a nice still shot of him. After that, we moved up to Athens, NY where we caught CSX Q003 with a CN unit 3rd out! He met Q417 at CP-118, so we raced up to QR117 and got a shot of him. Finally, our final River Line Train was Q409 which we caught at CP-124.
Then it was time for the Selkirk Sub! First two trains were Q019 and Q161 again, and we caught both at CP-VO in Voorheesville, NY. Then we moved down to Game Farm Road and M384 came East, followed by Q193. (Sry about absence of Captions on that one, got screwed up on iMovie) Then it was a Westbound Parade. X794 Light Power was first. Then following was an EPIC Q633 "Funeral Train" Which had three CSX Standard cabs pulling six Ex-CSX C40-8s (Now GECX 9000-9005) headed for the Pan Am Railway! It was great to get to see these units one last time. Following Q633 was K139 with a BNSF Dash 9 and a BNSF Tier 4. Then one more Westbound, Q351 came out of the yard with four units and a caboose! Great Surprise! We headed up to VO after that for L112 which had another BNSF unit trailing.
For evening action, we headed to Auto-177 at the Amsterdam, NY Amtrak Station. First up was Eastbound Q162, flying by with two more BNSF GEVOs pulling! Then Q386 came East, followed by Q620 which had an EPIC lashup of two CSX GEzz, and then a CN SD70M-2 and the CSX Spirit of Nashville!! Q254 followed with yet another special CSX units, the L&N Emblem "Heritage" unit! Then Amtrak 49 came west (Caught off guard) and CSX Q264 came East. After Q264, Q393 came west with two CSX GEzz and BNSF 736, a BNSF Bonnet! BNSF was dominating this line today!! After 393, we stayed for one more train, Q262, and that closed out the day, and brought our daily train total to 22 trains! (Also caught Amtrak 64 but no video)
