I found Ft Knox several years ago when we upgraded to a fifth wheel trailer. I really didn't like the standard fifth wheel hookups and went to an Anderson hitch. ...and I couldn't find a lock for it. ..until I stumbled onto Ft Knox. I bought theirs with one of their puck locks and never looked back. People take one look at the Ft Knox and ask where I got it and if I like it. For other locks I use around my truck (receiver hitch, coupler, tool box, ...) I use bolt lock. That way i can use my truck key for most of my lock needs when I travel. Yes... you can key them to your truck keys!!!!
Very useful. I like combining a good hitch lock with wheel locks, which has worked for years. I also have a GPS tracker as well, if it does go for a ride.
The locks look great. Like you said if someone wants it bad enough they’ll get it off. Your average trailer thief is not a lock picker. If they can’t smash or pry it off their moving on to another one.
Another thing that you could do is put your coupler lock pin through the chain so even if the managed to get a hook out it would be too short to hook up to
Flatbed hauler will take that also , I know it’s a deterrent A couple years back they took my enclosed trailer with tongue lock and 2 wheels removed, if they want it they will take it
Even with that lock set up on which is nice . If they have a chain with hooks on both ends they can hook on to the spot where the chains are mounted to the trailer and be gone
I'm doing research because I'm interested in buying this yellow lock system but your Master lock is exposed like that. What if someone comes with a cordless grinder? That's why you need a puck style that is actually steel and can't be drilled into.
This video came up right next to Lock Picking Lawyer's latest video in my Subscription's feed. 😆 It got me thinking that maybe you two could do a collaboration: You use all your different tricks to make the lock more secure like you were doing in this video and LPL tries to find the weaknesses.
thanks for this video. I bought this ft. knox lock after watching this, and I'm sure I have the same tongue, but can't close the latch like you did. it's too tight to close the hitch latch like you did on the second part of the video, on the pipe that sticks up into the ball socket. I already had to take my angle grinder to the center area of the lid part that swings over the ball, to get it to close all the way. It needed just a tiny bit of relief there. I think I will do the same on the pipe where I can see it hitting to provide a little relief there too. this is a keeper, but needs slight modification for my tongue. 1/2 hour later... that worked ground out where the part that clamps the ball, making the pipe a little more ball shaped, that works! needed some touch up with a cutoff wheel on my dremel, and good to go. I swear, I never seem to buy something that just fits. always needs modification.
I had a "rod" style lock you have on your coupler. Someone tried to punch out the key hole but failed. It ruined the key way. Luckily, the rod was so weak, I just bent it until it broke with the pipe for the equalizer hitch. After that, I don't bother looking for a heavy lock setup for my trailer because they pretty much all have a key way.
Deter is the operative word. Sadly there are a variety of ways to grab and go light rigs and there are plenty of bottom feeders willing to do just that. Good you upgraded as that other lock only needs a thief with rudimentary pick skills.
The thing about picking locks is you have to look at the situation the lock is getting picked. Yes LPL can pick a lock on a bench in an ideal position quickly. But crawling under a trailer and working with your hands over your head would be muck more difficult.
I bought one of these ft Knox locks for our boat trailer as we are temporarily living in a apartment. The lock seems REALLY well built and will take a lot of abuse before someone gets it off. I did run into a similar problem with what you described with the curt versions but with the UFP vs UFPXR lock covers. My boatmate trailer is stamped UFP, but is really a UFPXR sized hitch. They helped me out with getting the correct one after I sent a picture with dimensions. I do use the puck lock to makes sure and make it as hard as possible.
I'm interested in hearing more about how Simply Safe works being linked to the trailer. Our WiFi reaches the TT that sits next to the house. We have Simply Safe but didn't think about linking it to our home base unit. What happens when you set your home to away and the trailer is linked? Do you have to disconnect when traveling with the trailer?
Yes shout out to LPL! Did you see the latest coupler lock he picked from Altorlocks. It's $350 on pre-order but LPL said he would use it. And he had to build a special picking tool to pick it. Would love to see you review that lock once it's available.
I keep my travel trailer in my driveway and I have a smoke detector in it that is connected to my Ring alarm. So in the chance I have a fire in my camper while being stored I can be alerted of it ASAP.
My dad bought those puck locks for his cargo trailer doors and was all excited to show me. I felt bad when I said that an angle grinder will cut the strap used for the door in no time lol. But hey, at least it won't be silent like bolt cutters 🤷♂️
Hey Scott- I have one of these units on my 18 foot sure trac dovetail. I use the puck style lock. The hinge is welded in place, with a weld tack at each end of the pin. No way of driving it out with a hammer and drift. FYI .
Makes no difference to a professional. When I repo trailers...the lock and how you use it is irrelevant. Locks are meant to keep amateurs and honest people honest.
Gotta say if you knew LPL (style) just a little bit you would have Never used a Master lock in your video...But I have to say great shout out...and great vid...tyvm
You did not show it in the video I’m talking about the part is slide into the opening on the back your truck and you put a pin through it to hold it in place then you hook your trailer to it I may not know the correct phraseology for it but it’s the hitch itself not talking about on the trailer but the part that goes into the truck you put a pin through it with a some kind of like a clip that goes in there and I told Jaden place but I was wondering if there’s any kind of a like you can use that you can lock that so nobody can take your ball off the back of your truck
hay JD have you ever done a review on the bulldog coupler ?? and what are your thoughts is the sliding collar a better design than the standard Kurt style coupler
I get that this is a couple years old, but my question is why can't a thief just take an angle grinder and grind those little welds right off and remove the hinge in 10 seconds? Seems real easy to me.
JD, I’ve been thinking about purchasing a new Super duty. I occasionally tow gooseneck loads of hay with a 6.2L F-250 STX Regular cab. Loads are roughly 15,000 lbs and i barrow a fifth wheel sometimes from the in laws. My question to you is... from a diesel owners perspective, do you think I would be satisfied with a 7.3 gas or should I go with the 6.7?
@@Lilfarmrboy I appreciate your input! Really don’t wanna spend the extra $10,000 on a 6.7 if I don’t need to, but don’t wanna be dissatisfied with the performance of a gas (the sluggishness) do you own a 7.3 gasser?
@@AlveysAngle I actually owned a 6.2 but my buddy got a new 7.3. Night & day difference. Mainly get the highest rear ratio with the max towing package & you'll be fine. Plenty of RU-vid videos of the 7.3 towing heavy with no lag & Plenty of power. For reference we tow fifth wheels & gooseneck trailers with tractors. 7.3 is what I'm getting next.
After haveing 2 of the big 3 diesel motors and repair bills I run gas one tons and I don't miss it the 7.3 gas is excellent I still love my 6.4 hemi before I jump ship back to Ford problems
I can't believe you use a zip tie with that fort knox lock box. Please go buy some Paclocks to go with that. You can get interchangeable cores so you only have to worry about 1 key.
This is extra work, but you can take the spindle nut off and take the wheels/hubs off. A flat bed hauler would probably find an easier target than this.
Yeah the point of the video is not how to defeat the product it's just to show more options for security. Yeah you could use a saw to cut it or use a tow truck or dynamite or superman
JD, We are in our 70’s and just beginning this RV life with the GK’s while they are still young. I like what you did to make your trailer as undesirable as possible to try to steal. I was a little surprised at you saying you would change your locks to a puck lock. After seeing that LDL guy drill through that proven steel puck in 15-20 seconds, I believe your setup would have taken the same perp much longer to break into. Btw, I saw a master lock pro series looked very robust on Amazon ($20), that was a combo lock. Are they easier to pick than a key lock? If not, I might use that like your setup with the Fort Knox. Thanks, Larry
@@MrCrobie1 with the way the box opens it would cause the two halves of the box to "turn in on itself" keeping it from opening at all if it were designed that way
But that external hinge? Why would they design a lock mechanism with external hinges?🤔 Less than 30 seconds with a cut-off wheel. For 2 tack welds. Better than nothing though.
that was a dumb reply to a good vid... most dirtbag thieves dont have a time frame of 30 min in life to work... also you could have said an hour..or two hours.or this week.....what is you mission , to just argue a point...go get a life pal.. hes just trying to help people... you just want to be contentious for no good reason...
Do you know of a lock they make that you can put on your hitch when you attach it to your truck so nobody can come along and pull the pin and steal your hitch
