Inside a 9W generic ebay T8 LED strip-light.

A look at the construction of a generally available LED strip-light from ebay. Actually worth it just for the hackability of the housing alone.
Here's the data sheet for the chip:- (Slow Chinese link.)
www.winsemi.com...
It's a buck regulator with little smoothing on the input to allow a much better power factor.

I'm not dead sure why but I could watch you take stuff apart all day. If I ever become wealthy I shall pay you vast sums of money so that you can quit your job and spend all your time dismantling things for my amusement. Cheers to you, sir.

I have used 1/2 inch multistrand aluminium power cable in telephone exchanges for 50 Volt feeds. It came with a conductive grease too. I also have a 1 metre 128 smd Led work lamp with Li ion battery.

CCA or Copper Clad Aluminium is fairly common and except for a small reduction in current carrying capacity and its cheaper, WAY cheaper than pure copper. They actually take pretty thick wires of aluminiun wrap (clad) it in copper and stretch the shit out of it until it becomes individual strands like you see in the video. Theres no melting or anything like that involved.

Gad zukes man, the place I used to work for made lighting just like this but only for aircraft. Most had no regulation and were either 28VDC or 400Hz 120 VAC

just bought a few of these to try for $3.50 each. interestingly many of the wiring options are 3 pin to 2 pin leads (im in asia) and they actually insist you dont connect the earth wire! will check with a meter if the middle pin actually connects to the tube casing... need a new meter. alas never thought would need one on my travels!! thanks for the teardown.

You should put a link to the strip on ebay as well. You're right that there are quite many available, but that makes it even harder to find the one you just showed (the construction of which I really like).

Driver IC in power supply is very interesting, it is basically buck PFC made to work as LED driver. It would be interesting to see what is PF of it.

Oh snap man I think your telepathic!, I literally JUST order a couple of these ion warm white, but I paid like $9.25 ea for them.. I have some regular tube lights like this that take the same type of plug but they are actual copper.. I have some spare 6" jumper links to daisy chain them together with spacing also. More telepathy! You had the SAME idea I had putting in the LED tape, I got that RGB remote controlled tape coming and I was going to put some of that in one of these housings and be able to change it with the remote, lol.

Have you ever thought of recording with a go pro? i have noticed how narrow the FOV is of your videos. they are very educational and fun to watch but you can't see much of the larger items that you disassemble. you can find go pro hero 3's for relatively cheap on ebay :)

+Tyler Walker I've got a GoPro and it somehow managed to fit my entire workbench in from the same height and made everything look like it was a mile away. You can retrofit CCTV lenses to the GoPro for greater "zoom", but the majority are not fitted with IR filters, so everything goes a bit "intense". The iPad is a nice lazy solution to banging up videos. Just record, use the RU-vid capture app to upload them over the excruciatingly slow Internet connection overnight, and edit the data in the morning.

Hmm... I'm not sure if that would fly in the States. I know aluminum branch wiring isn't allowed under modern US building codes, but I'm not sure about the regulations for accessory/consumer electronics wiring, assuming it's mains power running through that harness.

rhkips Hello, i sent the following to Clive but hopefully you can answer this. Hello Clive, i just bought 1 of these i believe exact same lights but i didnt open it up yet like you did. After seeing the problems you had with the 1ft like this. I think i have to open it to make sure all connectors are crimped. The wires scare me. I want to be sure that this wont burn down my house before i connect it. Im going to use it above my kitchen sink so it will be on every night til i go to bed n when im not home. So please tell me you think it should be ok after i make sure connectors are good. Im in USA n we use 120 volts B W G usually n i will extend wires out of ceiling with at least 14-2 wire using wire nuts n electrical tape. Hope to get reply soon from you. Thank you

would be good if they made led strip with built in opal diffuser coating on the strip like the opal diffuser coating on led strip track profiles but without having to use a track profile. NOt seen any availible with opal diffuser coatings yet

when one of these T8 led tubes burn out, is it usually the leds that fail or some other component within the tube?

Usually the LEDs. You can often tell by the appearance of a black dot (burn mark) in the LED.

Why 77 volts and around 48 leds?? R/. 77V/48=1,6V which means that it is the voltage drop of each LED.
@jordanwaeles
@jordanwaeles 8 лет назад
doesn't make sense, i haven't seen white LED's with only 1.6v of forward voltage. I bet it's like he said, 2 circuits of 24, making it 3.2v per LED which is totally standard white led voltage
@mrb692
@mrb692 6 лет назад
Did either of y’all watch the whole video? It’s two parallel strings of 24 seriesed LEDs. One string is the odd lights, the other drives the even lights, that way when one LED shits the bed then the whole tube stays lit.

Do you know what sort of leds are used in the backlighting of modern laptop screens. Im thinking of replacing my old laptop ccfl with leds, but i dont know what type to use, have you ever converted one clive?
@bigclivedotcom
@bigclivedotcom 9 лет назад
+zx8401ztv There are specifically designed LEDs that emit a lot of light out of a very narrow side aperture for edge-lighting some of these panels. I've not really taken many flat panel screens to bits, so I can't say how much variation there is in the technology.
@zx8401ztv
@zx8401ztv 9 лет назад
+bigclivedotcom Hmm special types, looks like ill have to hunt ebay for a possible kit/replacement. Thanks for the answer :-), i suspected that but you are into lighting more than me, the led strips you have shown us are dam bright, im quite supprised how well they work.
@ChuckFickens1972
@ChuckFickens1972 8 лет назад
+zx8401ztv the CCFL tubes just throw light out in all directions, so if you can figure out a way to replace them with LEDs pointing them in about the right direction it would probably light the screen OK. However, once you've got the LEDs, the driver for them and the time it would take to make it work... If the screen isn't working at the moment either get a new CCFL screen or a new inverter (whichever one has failed)... or just see if a full LED replacement screen kit is available... I know it's possible to get complete replacement screens with LED instead of CCFL back lights for quite a few popular laptop models and they come with the driver as well (although you may have hack a few little bits of the plastic inside the screen surround to make it fit!) Also... you will lose the ability to dim the screen if you replace CCFL with LED, it will always be at full brightness, which may reduce battery life
@zx8401ztv
@zx8401ztv 8 лет назад
+Mark Batchford Hmm i would use an adjustable constant current regulator to feed the leds, so setting an illumination level should not be too hard :-D Im not one for throwing away a working lcd just because the lighting is a bit naff, it died once, i threw a non ideal ccfl tube in, and it works but there is slight shadows in the bottom corners, the ccfl was shorter than the original. As clive loves leds, i was just trying to learn what type of leds would do the job, it sounds like i may raid a dead lcd for its led strip ha ha :-D
@bigclivedotcom
@bigclivedotcom 8 лет назад
+zx8401ztv Backlight illumination in LCD panels is a bit of a science in regards to getting even illumination. But for a rough and ready low power panel for data purposes you could probably use a row of self adhesive LED strips behind it.

T5 is slimmer and neater, but for LED it's sometimes better to choose a strip with a larger heat dissipation area like the T8. (The number after the "T" being the diameter in 1/8ths of an inch.)
