By popular request, a teardown of a bug zapper lamp. It's got three very distinct sections of circuitry and is quite nicely designed.
Note that this is a 200-250V lamp.
This video is a test video with louder audio.

石尸丹丁丹廾彐丁囗 中仈丹仁片囗 That remembers me of something I did recently... I left the multimeter in amps mode, and I was diagnosing an issue with a power plug, so connected it to live and neutral and BANG! Fortunately, the UPS protected me and my multimeter and the breaker didn’t even trip. And kids, that’s why they sell multimeters which alert you or outright prevent you from changing mode if you’re in the wrong mode! Need a better multimeter...

If I remember correctly, biting bugs, like bed bugs, mosquitoes and such are attracted to heat, not light, which is why they’re such a pain from dusk on, because our bodies heat contrasts with the cold surrounding surfaces more when the sun is down making us more visible to them. Thanks for your videos, they’re wonderful.

My first experience was at age three or so, sticking one of my mum's knitting needles into an alluring power outlet. This was in the days before those neat little shutters to stop such poking fun. I bounced off the wall on the other side of the room. It must have been a Saturday morning as dad came in to see what the loud bumping crash was. He then took me to one side to teach me about those dangerous volts. I don't think I needed any more lessons after that.

i managed to stick my fingers in a socket when I was about 3. I remember doing it. My mum gave me hot sugary tea afterwards. I remember drinking tea before that and liking it. Since then, I can't stand it - even the smell of team makes me want to vomit. Basic pavlovian conditioning in action I suppose - it should be part of the national curriculum. Also it would get rid of tea - which as I might have mentioned, is minging.

Here’s an idea; take the chip off, and rewire the board so there’s one common, and the other leads of the LEDs are brought out individually. Now make a bug-zapping clock out of it, and have the UV LEDs blink on and off at one second intervals like an old-time VCR (until you set the time, anyway.) Fun, fun, and naughty! I’m sure the inventors of this didn’t have a bug-zapping wall clock in mind!

I suspect I have a neighbor screwing up my reception and it sounds like this antenna actively blocks out cell phone interference (would like to know for sure how good it is before I buy it and the reviews I find appear to be by non-electronic minded people who don't even know the meaning of a "directional antenna" as the ad claims). I've tried one of these devices in my back kitchen a few years ago. Unfortunately it didn't zap houseflies, bluebottles and wasps to death but harmless moths, butterflies, and daddy longlegs. The volume of these perfectly innocent insects that where lured in by the light to be zapped and fall into the "death tray" underneath that needs frequent emptying will no doubt provide positive feedback to the owner that this device works great. Disease carrying flies never bother with it, preferring the bin or any food left out or even a roast left resting in the oven (they find their way around the back and up and in). Also the dog shit and cat shit from the neighbourhood. Utterly useless devices. I tend to encourage house spiders instead. Keep the fresh webs and dust away the old ones. ;)

Next on/off - same brightness and Bug zapper. Next on/off - bug zapper only. The pcb looks identical. (I checked for a solder bridge on the chip - none.) Not that it matters because the whole unit is sealed up with plastic, but the one side of the zapper that is connected to mains, it would have little if any voltage if it were connected to the neutral leg. BUT, not sure if you have a neutral leg with your high mains voltage. In the US, we have three wires coming in, two hot and out of phase giving 240 volts between them with a neutral (close to ground) being electrically between them (practically ground altho it is not for use as a ground (it may have up to 3 volts on it) which gives you 120 volts between it and either hot. The standard power mains here is 240 volts which is split with a neutral into two (and out of phase) 120 volt circuits.

Since it's on an rcd and you have to intentionally put your finger I it I call good enough but not something to put in a lamp where a child can reach. KJBowen2204 My first ever soldering iron was an Antex XS25 which I got when I was 15 - the year was 1984! I still have it and it works fine. You may struggle with certain soldering jobs due to the relatively low power of 25 Watts, especially with the trend of building large ground planes into PCB's. You may find a Chinese import temperature regulated iron gives better results and spares (including tips) are very cheap too.

Dunno what you've done, but the audio is so much better in this video compared to others recently. Well done. EDIT just heard your comment about RU-vid's new edit function. It works!

The biting ones (mostly female mosquitoes) are mostly attracted to the CO2 we breathe out, with other factors, like body heat and smell, having some effect too, but CO2 is good bait. Some good bug zappers take advantage of this, or you can add an acid to a base (vinegar and bicarbonate of soda is a classic safe one) to get the same gas to attract mosquitoes.

IR or even just a warm resistor would do a better job at attracting biting bugs. They find you by both scent and body heat

I wish Clive used the power meter that he used to use in his older videos. The flickery HOPI meter is not meant for videos.

swansealoaf1999 Watts = power factor X volts X amps

Power factor is to do with devices having capacitance or inductance, rather than being pure resistors. Inductive and capacitive loads in an AC circuit cause the current and voltage waveforms to get out of synch with each other by a certain angle. The power factor value is a measure of how much the current and voltage waveforms differ . PF=cos(theta), where theta is the angle by which current differs from voltage. A power factor of 1 would mean that the load is purely resistive or that any inductance and capacitance cancel each other out. You can also start to get into things like reactive and apparent power that can affect circuit design. It's not usually an important consideration for household devices, but is important for industrial applications because power companies don't like low power factors.

Actually John is correct that in a complex load Watts=pf*V*I. Apparent power (VA) is simply V*I

Considering it's a chinese product. The 400 v capacitor is probably a misprint that they got for cheap in bulk lowering their costs. Which would explain their use in a location where you'd imagine that it would fail.
