Draglines fall into two broad categories: those that are based on standard, lifting cranes, and the heavy units which have to be built on-site. Most crawler cranes, with an added winch drum on the front, can act as a dragline. These units (like other cranes) are designed to be dismantled and transported over the road on flatbed trailers. Draglines used in civil engineering are almost always of this smaller, crane type. These are used for road, port construction, pond and canal dredging, and as pile driving rigs. These types are built by crane manufacturers such as Link-Belt and Hyster.
The much larger type which is built on site is commonly used in strip-mining operations to remove overburden above coal and more recently for oil sands mining. The largest heavy draglines are among the largest mobile land machines ever built. The smallest and most common of the heavy type weigh around 8,000 tons while the largest built weighed around 13,000 tons.

Very good operator. No chain rattle and keeps the bucket centered.

Bucket size and shape is determined by the type and density of dirt being removed, even though the dragline size may be the same.

The bucket doesn't look nearly as deep as others...why is that?

Well it's not a construction drag line, it's a pit drag line. Just my 2 cents worth? But very cool👍

In good easy digging like this, the wider flatter lighter bucket design cuts down on fill time with more payload. This also helps with less dozer time because it is great for pulling pads and skimming the roof of coal seems. Downside is this design often costs more and is both less robust and aggressive for penetrating tougher digging.

The boom on these are minimum 300 feet long, so yes, the bucket is approx 200-250 feet away.

to anyone who could be reading this years later, what would be the purpose of spending so much on a giant dragline, just to get dirt from one side of a road to another? surly theres a less cheaper, more practical way?
@adnes12
@adnes12 3 года назад
this is often the cheapest and most efficient way to move dirt shovels and diggers require a fleet of trucks to run on top of their own running costs, plus dozers and graders to keep the roads good these guys usually just have a dozer and a cable tractor, 3 man crew it all depends on how the pit is set up though

It's NOT used is construction it is used only in open pit mining to remove the overburden to get to the product they are mining for.

For the people who have absolutely zero knowledge and are brainless when it comes to heavy equipment... this is a walking dragline and it is NOT used in construction it is used only in surface mining operations only to remove the overburden that lies above the desired product. ... They are not run by a diesel engine they are run by numerous electric motors either ac or dc electric motors in the machinery house...They are not run by a single operator but they are run by a crew of up to 5 people 24/7.

Thank you, I was about to "go there". 99% of people are clueless of the size of these machines, even from afar they don't look 'that big'. The reality hits when you get next to one, walk inside one and construct them. They are amazing!

@@noahtheowl7107 he’s not dumb, it is indeed electric. And no it’s not one motor. It’s 6 motors for the hoist, 4 motors for the drag. More motors here, more motors there. All run off of 25,000 volts

@@djidroneuser5271 Yup! Been there and built two of these monsters. One Marion, one Bucyrus Erie. The electric cord going into these about 5-6 inch diameter and the elec cord is moved by a small dozer.
