Sorry for this very "ignorant" question. Does it mean you power your engine with only water? You do not buy gasoline or diesel?

The engine runs on diesel and that in turn drives a hydraulic pump which powers the boats systems

There are water points everywhere along the canal system. Grey water goes into the canal system and black water points are quite regular. Its cold outside in the winter but nice and warm in the boat.

If I ever make it back to the UK I will use hydraulic drive on my boat. It really is versatile and you can power so much from the engine without worrying about voltage drops and wires getting hot etc. Great boat!
@LifeinaNutshell
@LifeinaNutshell 7 лет назад
I had never heard of hydraulic drive on a narrowboat before. It makes so much sense. Yes there is a slight loss in fuel economy. But narrowboats aren't exactly the most economical thing in the first place.

Why are so many of these boat so narrow? This is not quite 7-feet wide. I would like my boat to be no less than 10-feet wide. That extra 3-feet would make a big difference to me. Is there some law about their widths?

I'm impressed, love the boat. Pity about you removing one of your heating redundancies. The Diesel stove with coils and a Webasto or other hydronic tied together, would make a perfect pair, with redundant circulation pumps. Worst case you have a solid fuel heater in the bow and a Diesel heater in the stern. ;-)
@LifeinaNutshell

It would have been nice to keep the second diesel water heater but I doubt it would ever get used. I hope that the next owner of the heater will make use of its fantastic design.

I don't think you should be getting rid of the diesel boiler, maybe just move it a few feet closer to the bow (to the other side of the wall) so that it is in the utility room area. it's always a really good idea to have some redundancy in your heating, plus it's always on and is silent, unlike like the wellesco. nice boat sober Aussies.

When they built the canal system in the UK if was done 100% as a private project, so they held costs down by creating a narrow class of boat and barge. The system is unique to the UK - European canals and barges are much wider, being predominantly based on the existing river system.

What is average price for this ? How long is the canal ?

Hi Clint. The canal system in the UK covers about 2000-3000 miles. You can get a decent secondhand narrowboat for around 35-45,000 pounds. Or, if you want to do work you can pick one up for less. These are for a 60ft ish one. You can also get them for over 100,000 pounds too. W.

They're called Hatches. ;)
@viktoriaelisabethrotenbour8285
The doors in the sides of the boat are called hatches. Loved the tour by the way. Viktoria E. Rotenbourg-Benson.
