Today we discovered the Vardzia Caves, an ancient secret city dug into the hillside just 4 hours away from the capital, Tbilisi. With only one way in, this fortress was a huge 13-storey hideaway for Georgians to protect themselves against invaders 1000 years ago. We had so much fun winding our way through the small tunnels and rooms that were once bustling apartments, chapels, and shops. We finish our day with a homemade meal in our quaint Airbnb in Akhaltsikhe, Georgia.

It is such a neat place! It's hard to imagine how big it would have been when it was first built.

I came across your channel while watching videos about Patagonia and then found your videos about Georgia. I am surprised you did not go to the Northern provinces - Upper Svaneti, Kazbegi in Khevi province, Tusheti or Khevsureti to see the highest peaks. Near Tskkaltubo are natural caves of Sataplia and Prometheus. Hopefully, you will come back here to explore the rest of the country as Georgia has a lot more to offer

Yes we wanted to go last time we were there but the season was just not good timing. It was getting snowy and cold in the mountains and we didn't have the right gear. We opted to come back another time when we're more prepared. Yes lots of Georgia left to see!

Nice video guys. Question is there any where you can sleep/stay near the caves or is the town of Vardazia the closest? And also how far is it from Batumi and how did you travel from Batumi to Vardazia? :D Thanks!
@nicoleandmico
@nicoleandmico 2 года назад
Thank you! We found the easiest place to stay to access the caves was Akhaltsikhe (the town of Vardzia is quite far away from the Vardzia caves). We took a marshrutka (which is a micro bus/van) from Batumi to Akhaltsikhe which only cost a few dollars each. Akhaltsikhe is a bit of a sleepy town (which we love, so we stayed to work from there for a little while) but there is a beautiful fortress there that you can also visit. We can't recall how long the ride from Batumi to Akhaltsike is! We want to say about 4 hours, but the memory is a bit foggy. The tourist information centre in Batumi was open when we were in town and the staff there was really helpful in getting us info on how to visit the caves. If they are still open when you are there we highly recommend having a chat!

@@nicoleandmico Wonderful thank you so much for the information. It's really helpful. We're arriving in Batumi on the 27th so we would probably visit in November..not sure if its open then

Good question! I'm not sure if it is open year-round although I have a feeling it would be. The 27th will be here so soon! Exciting!

It is! As for Armenia we've heard/seen everyone doing it by train/overnight train....as Canadians I know we can get a visa on arrival if you fly but not 100% about if it's possible by land/train...
@nicoleandmico

Funny you say that - our video on Thursday is the overnight train to Armenia! We got our visas online before leaving Georgia. We weren't able to get a VOA from the land border but online was really simple and approved within 24 hours
