inside a USB rechargeable head torch, and a hack to improve it.

Firstly I'm going to start by saying that this head torch is actually very good. It has the following features:-
A surprisingly large rechargeable cell.
USB powered charger that puts out a voltage limited charging current (200mA) of near dead-on 4.2V.
It drives the LEDs at 20mA, which is within their rating.
The button is firm, but easy to operate.
The positioning hinge is not floppy.
It has a generously sized headband and comfortable pad.
It clips firmly onto a baseball cap or the rim of a beanie.
Its standby current is very low at just 27uA.
And now the downside. It has an "induction" function which has absolutely nothing to do with induction, but in Chinese-speak means proximity sensor. This involves a modulated IR LED and a receiver to detect objects in front of the light. This is used to turn it on and off by simply waving your hand in front of it. The downside is that it will also turn on and off when reflective objects are held in front of it, or you look at anything with a retroreflective surface like a co-worker wearing high visibility (hi-vis) clothing.
The good news is that this feature is easy to remove permanently by simply cutting out the IR LED or putting a cover over the IR receiver.
You can find this head torch on ebay by searching for the keywords - usb headlamp induction cap (amongst other weird word combinations) here's a link to a typical vendor:-

It's for fishing, as per the translations in the comments. Many fish are silvery... maybe it wakes you up by coming on when it sees a fish?

I like watching some of your vintage footage Clive when I have a spare few minutes to do so. A useful design for a LED head lamp with movement sensor, though just about anything would trip it on. You easy solved the latter problem by snipping out the emitter LED. Instead of the heat shrink replacement over the battery, maybe been best to wrap some Kapton tape over it to refit inside the housing.

When you said "induction" i thought Ooow no charge connector, charge by coil. But no :-( You could disconnect the battery and use your variable supply to see if it detects low voltage, perhaps, maybe? :-)

The dark one is actually the IR emitter. It's so dark because it has a light filter on it, which only lets IR waves pass through. The clear one, the one you cut off, is the receiver.
@bigclivedotcom
@bigclivedotcom 8 лет назад
+xAlphaAx I checked with the camera on my phone, and the clear LED was the emitter. The receiver also has three terminals for power and signal out.

bigclivedotcom Oh okay, never seen a receiver like that and I have some IR led's lying around which look exactly like the one you didn't cut off, so I thought that didn't really make any sense. Thanks for checking!

The switch should be capable of changing the mode,single or double clicks,perhaps. The model I use has two switches,one for normal light,and the other controls the infra red circuit. Suggested for fishing,no light to scare away the fish,but instant light when something is attached to the hook. Four led's give a terrific light,too bright to look at,something everyone should be aware of.

@dermitza

You/they could also angle the transmitter and receiver such that the reflection on/off event happens only proximally to the lamp (also assuming the transmitter has a somewhat narrow beam).
@alanmcguinn
@alanmcguinn 8 лет назад
Clive, I assume by removing the IR LED you would have improved the battery life somewhat. Could you have put another white LED in its place to improve the light output or do they run off a significantly different voltage?
@bigclivedotcom
@bigclivedotcom 8 лет назад
+Alan McG The IR LED is modulated by an output pin on the 8-pin chip via a resistor, so I don't think it would really have drawn much current or would add much light if you put another white LED there.

WRT cheaper and brighter headtorches -- there many of those bikelight type units that run on 8.4v with normal barrel connectors. I'm interested in your views on getting/making 'safe' 8.4v battery packs (2 cells' worth, usually in packs of 4 or 6 18650 cells) and (especially) safe chargers for these. There are lots of really nice bright headtorches to be found with rather questionable chargers and connectors/cables!!. I'm always making sure the chargers are connected through 30mA RCD and 1amp fuse.... but I can't reccomend such things to anybody because I know some of them are dodgy!!! Any thoughts?

I would suggest that the charger has a battery protection circuit for charging. I found a nice one on ebay which I have been using to charge the disposable e cigarette batteries you pointed out in a previous video for some projects. Do you know how one might build a charger for Li ion battery packs beyond the 3.7v standard? I have read that the charging is very specific to li ion, starting at a particular amperage, and tapering off as time goes on. I was wanting to bundle several together (7.4v, 10.8v etc ). Good video as always. Keep up the good work.

Maybe you could save a few mA on the running state by removing the infrared receiver - it must have some quiescent current, too.

+zaprodk I considered that but thought it might have had an internal pull-up or down function and could leave the processor switch line floating. It's passive current will probably be negligible.

Would you consider trying one more improvement? In the video the light turned on and off when you touched the contacts where you had desoldered the IR led. Would two short leads from there to outside the case work reliably as a touch sensor to turn it on and off (at least until it got static zapped on a cold dry day)?

Clive, that looks like it may use the same short-range presence detection trick using an IR receiver that I've used in the past. Check to see if the IR LED output is modulated at 38kHz. If it is I'll tell you more - it may not be as simple as you may think.
@bigclivedotcom
@bigclivedotcom 8 лет назад
I guessed it would be modulated, and the receiver will be the typical demodulating type with logic output as often used with remote control systems to filter out ambient IR.
@Graham_Langley
@Graham_Langley 8 лет назад
+bigclivedotcom Well yes, but it's not just as simple as looking for the reflected IR carrier. Due to the way the AGC and data slicer in the receiver work its output hangs on (low) for a very short time after the end of the received IR. This time is to proportional to the strength to the received IR which in turn is proportional to the distance of the target, all other things being equal. We were looking for a punter standing in front of a display screen for a certain time. This method proved to be far more reliable than simply looking for the main returned signal and had other advantages too. Worked with several IR receiver types we tried when this project was live eight years ago and we later found references to it online.

Seems reasonable for a super cheap design but it can't be much more than 10 lumens which is hardly enough to bother with when you can get a 1 xAAA light with a reversable clip to put on a ball cap that can produce about 100 lumens, as well as doubling as a reasonable EDC pocket light and not needing the proprietary USB charging cable since NiMH AA cells (or alkaline in a pinch) are easy to find. Nevertheless, it was still interesting to see what's inside, how it works!
@bigclivedotcom
@bigclivedotcom 8 лет назад
+Stinky Cheese Work a long shift with a high power head light and you'll suddenly realise that battery life is very short indeed. I prefer low intensity for many hours than high intensity for less than one. There's a good chance the high power light would spend most of the battery curve putting out less light than the little three LED one.
@stinkycheese804
@stinkycheese804 8 лет назад
+bigclivedotcom If it were many years ago you would have a point. Today, there is no reason to settle for this trash. Don't get me wrong, I am old school and watched LED light progression for a long time. If anything, the best option today is to benefit from the great advances in LEDs. This is not an exclusive club. You can do it too.
@petarpetrovic6590
@petarpetrovic6590 8 лет назад
+Stinky Cheese I didn't know that law of conservation of energy is no more valid (only in that case your arguments hold water). In best case with commercially available LEDs you will get less then 1.5 hour of of 100 lumens light intensity from AAA battery. LEDs did evolved in last years but only in laboratories (Cree in laboratory produced 303 lumens per watt LED and MIT demonstrated 230% electrical efficient LED) but they are not commercially available (best Cree LEDs on market produce less then 90 lumens per watt)
@stinkycheese804
@stinkycheese804 8 лет назад
Petar Petrovic Conservation of energy? You must be joking when the core purpose is enough light to do *something* and frankly, I've suffered through many past years of the low powered LEDs in a product that had only 10 lumens. If energy was expensive on this scale I'd see the point, but literally it is pennies to recharge a battery, and batteries only a couple dollars themselves for NiMH rechargables. It is true that I get less than 1.5 hours out of a AAA at 100lm, but that's what LOW mode on the flashlight is for, or even medium for that matter, or why if I need more time I can just carry and additional battery with both the light and extra battery being smaller than this light. LED evolution is about what is in inexpensive products. This type of 3 x 5mm encapsulated 100mW LED has been around for 20 years. They are now perhaps 50% brighter but it's not enough when the total is still a mere ~10 lumens. If you want to limit yourself so severely to so little light, so be it. I can only tell you what works for me, but it was only one example. I also have a fairly small (Akoray K-106) 1xAA light with a clip I reversed to use as a headlamp, with programmable power levels such that I could get the most light for any runtime I want. It will not run for days at a time. I have never needed a headlamp to run for days at a time. If something isn't a headlamp then mass and volume isn't an issue so a larger heavier battery can be used. Perhaps it is all beside the point which was to analyze the product and in that light it was a worthwhile video. It just seemed there was a little too much enthusiasm for the design when in the end, it pales in comparison to other (more expensive yet still) reasonably low cost alternatives. The question is what would it take to improve this? A 1W LED could be used at less than $1 (bulk manufacturing volume price) and a modest 5 cent piece of aluminum for the heatsink. It could then be 80 lumens. Would it then be worth $1.05 more? You may not think so but I do.

Well, this chip seems familiar to me. On banggood etc youll find little stupid balls with a propeller and a distance sensor, so theyll hover over surfaces (which frankly does not work to well). But it is an ir "induction" 8 pin chip and it is powering a tiny crappy motor, why not use it to power leds.
