Hot Da*m.....not meaning to be crude but this really lifted my spirits. It is great news that some of the power and ability of our government is being used to actually help humanity. I think that all of us could use with a self check from time to time and see what we have done just to help others, with no agenda or expectation of payment. Thanks Scott for sharing this.

Ha! I once had to do electrical work above this seed vault. I went through a ceiling hatch. There was water on the top of the vault (condensation issues, as I recall) and I had to squeeze on my belly to clear the I-beams above. By the time I returned through the hatch, I was soaking wet and it was very cold in there. Good fun!

These places are amazing and its a shame they don't deal with normal gardeners most experiments are run by normal gardeners not researchers
@francesbatycki404
@francesbatycki404 Год назад
I’m not sure we can claim that. We normal gardeners have no central data bank and we can reinvent the wheel several times before we move on. Scientific research is so far beyond normal that we need to see it as a whole society project. These are the researchers who may feed our world in the not too too distant future. Not disagreeing that we normal folk have our very valuable roles, but…

Fascinating! I had no idea that this seed vault existed in the USA. Considering the frequency of disasters, it seems like a good idea to have such seed vaults in many places. I suspect that most enthusiastic gardeners have their own low-tech seed collections. I know that I have plenty for at least three plantings.

I’ve heard of this place. Never saw it though. Thanks for this field trip. So cool. Places and organizations/agencies like it should be given such a high praise and recognition for the work that is done. I hope it does, OPENLY. Especially when it comes to agriculture. So important. Medical research is another one. Growing up as a young gardener with a great mentor who gave/instilled such a passion for plants, I have always known how important agricultural is. Especially fresh. Can’t beat it. When we used to eat my papa’s fresh lettuces, tomatoes, peppers, tropical fruits right from his backyard and then ate store bought stuff, the taste difference was noticeable. So cool. The nutrient content is off the charts. Keep up your amazing efforts. Much love and aloha from Hawaii 🙏🏼🤙🏼🫡✊🏼

The seed bank is an amazing place surrounded by other amazing places! Nearby there's a soil lab where people can get their soil tested along with research greenhouses studying things like weeds along with making improvement to crops like wheat. There's also something to be said about another thing that's done in the seed lab which is testing seed viability. They take a sample of seeds, cut them open and stain them. The stain turns a specific color when there is the presence of enough CO2, which tells us that the seeds are respiring and thus alive! And it's mighty tedious work for some seeds as they can be ever so teeny tiny. It's great to see places like this get coverage!
@tretre1692
@tretre1692 Год назад
Is the soil lab private or state owned?! Theres MANY soil testing labs that are at state universities and they’ll test your samples at a fraction of the cost! Not to mention, it helps teach the future generation!
@RussetMan
@RussetMan Год назад
@@tretre1692 The soil lab is state owned! Though having looked it up the lab has been moved from a building which is right across the street from the seed vault to a place in Denver. For more information on the place I recommend looking up the CSU Soil, Water and Plant Testing Laboratory.

Awesome opportunity you had. You usually have such well researched videos but I was disappointed that you didn't cover the history or even the core mission of the place. You covered the seed aspect pretty well but I was really confused about the "animal" aspect of the center. I can only assume they storing sperm and eggs for all those animals? I'd also would have liked to hear about what they have done to prepare for the worst case scenario. The CDC is a great example of an institution designed to protect us but when the worst case comes it doesn't always go as expected!

@@steveunderhill5935 I know they do grow out to replenish seed sometimes. You can see it in the database. The thing that I don't understand is how do they preserve seed from Hybrids dating back to the pre-70's? If you grow out, it's no longer a hybrid and really older seed, especially from other countries, would be impossible to get seed replenished.

How are we able to preserve those if we were to need to heavily rely on them?!
