Today we are taking a look inside a 73 million dollar untouched supermax prison (also known as a Cmax) the supermax prison was built in 1998 and consisted of 10 Cell blocks and 500 beds, along with a courtroom, underground tunnels, a small clinic, visitation rooms, and an execution chamber. a 200 bed minimum security prison is also connected through underground tunnels. Supermax prisons are a step above maximum security prisons. they are the highest-level security prisons in the country and are designed to hold inmates who are considered to be an extreme security threat. Prisoners were often transferred to a supermax when they have attempted to kill staff or other inmates, have organized gangs to challenge prison management, or who have proven to be exceptionally destructive.
in 1999, just 1 year after opening, the first and final execution occurred by lethal injection. after this, a new law came about, limiting the death penalty. initially, the facility was intended to be a one-year shock treatment to break down disruptive prisoners and make them more compliant. the shock treatment consisted of keeping inmates isolated in their cells for up to 24 hours a day, no Tvs, no phone time, no connection with other inmates, and a 12 ‘ x 30’ enclosed, empty box with concrete cement walls and floor with a ceiling that is composed partially of steel slates and wire mesh which allows a minimal amount of fresh air and sunshine. this was considered their court yard. Prisoners report that the yard is overbearingly hot on summer days, and during yard time prisoners are not allowed to have any water. even after considering these harsh conditions, the department decided to leave the prisoners inside the supermax prison indefinitely along with transferring more prisoners. as the government abused the shock method, prisoners who were released from the prison after years of solitary confinement, were left with mental illnesses and could no longer function in the outside world due to the solitary conditions. the facility was not intended for the kind of long-term imprisonment that occurred there, with some inmates spending more than 10 years in continuous solitary confinement. after 15 years in operation the facility then closed in 2013 after watchdog groups discovered the cruel conditions for prisoners. prison reformer advocates then protested for it to be shut down. This wasn’t the only supermax that was shut down though, in 1999 there were over 57 supermax prisons in the US. but by 2021 there is now only 1 remaining. comment down below if you think closing these prisons was right even for the worlds most violent and nasty criminals. now join us as we go inside as we explore this supermax prison stuck in time.
