Berlin's Tegel airport was for decades the city's gateway to the world, transporting millions of passengers ever year to and from the German capital.
When it closed in 2020 there was one big question - what to do with such a huge site.
The answer? A space for technology companies, a university, and even homes of the future.

0:08 to 0:13 doesn't show Tegel airport but the even older airport in Tempelhof. It originally took up business in 1923 although the main building shown here ("Zentralflughafen") was only finished in 1941. This airport was closed in 2008.

I’ve flown into Tegel many times as a pilot and always found it extremely efficient. It had a huge amount of character with its unique layout, architecture and history. It was a joy. Unfortunately the new Brandenburg airport lacks so much of that, especially efficiency. I still remain extremely dubious that drones will do home deliveries. So much of sci-fi collapses on contact with reality.

From a passenger perspective I found Tegel just terrible... I always found it very chaotic and the connection via bus was just a joke... I'm really happy that the new airport is what it is: a clean, organized, and well connected transport hub. Not to mention that many Berliners are glad that the noise has reduced as their largest airport isn't in the centre of their city anymore.
@rachelcarre9468
@rachelcarre9468 9 месяцев назад
@@DenzelPF-jl4lj Agreed, it was difficult to access via public transport. But in an age when so many airports are similar, it's unique character was special. My favourite bit was the aircraft parking guidance looked like a dove cot and you had to quickly identify the right 'door' for your aircraft to see when to stop.

Ad a Berliner I found Tegel difficult to reach (only by bus which is ridiculous) and only terminal A was efficient. The low cost terminals were horrible, it took ages to navigate those plus the security was the slowest I have ever seen in my entire life. Granted BER is not a lot better. Interesting to see how the former airport Berlin-Tegel has changed in the last 3 years. As a Berliner, I flew from there a few times. For me personally, the (former) Berlin-Tegel airport remains a symbol of how little politics is interested in the opinion of the people. You should never forget the referendum of 2017, where a clear majority of over 55% voted for the preservation of the airport. The Berlin government at the time was not interested at all and they simply continued with their plan to close the airport.

Tegel was a great airport. The critical voices always forget what it was constructed for: an airport for West Berlin, with very limited traffic and only three airlines (one each for the western allies USA, UK, and France) allowed to fly there. It was efficient and user-friendly, with very short distances from car/bus to check-in to plane. And it had plenty of character. It should have been kept working as a city airport, a bad decision that is going to be mourned about much in the future.
@TarikDaniel

@DominicWellington
@DominicWellington 9 месяцев назад
As a city airport, TXL was missing a fast rail link to downtown. The layout with security at each gate also meant that the lounge was ground side, and you had to allow for time to clear security when you walked down to your gate, and then wait in an area that was really not sized for modern aircraft (especially if there was more than one boarding at the time). If one had to be kept, it should have been Tempelhof, although I do understand why residents did not agree!
@frankh.2669
@frankh.2669 9 месяцев назад
@@DominicWellington, the missing rail link was a problem, yes, but the buses took you downtown in a much shorter time than what it takes now to go to BER with that "fast rail link". Lounge access, and the resulting path and necessary time for a walk to the gate is a luxury problem for very few passengers. Resident feedback to the closing of Tempelhof was very mixed, very many people living nearby, and definitely in acoustic range, wanted it kept open.

There is no green hydrogen because there never will be. Most is made from natural gas. And unless it is liquid the tank is the equivalent to one fifth or less capacity of petrol. A 40 liter petrol car becomes a 10 liter hydrogen car by design. Unless you want most of the interior space to be the tank. With one seat and a dozen high pressure tanks packing your giant car you can get the same range as the petrol tank in a hatchback. And the flammability range for hydrogen in air is like 3 to 97% compared to natural gas which is more like 4 to 17%. Basically that means natural gas gets too rich to burn at high concentration. Things like torches need to pull in air and mix it for the gas to burn. That isn't a thing with hydrogen. It burns in almost all situations. Petrol is a mixed bag. The vapor is explosive and probably the most dangerous thing you encounter daily but liquid petrol you can put a cigarette out in without fear. Diesel is safer still. There's a reason the military and school busses are, not a big deal to get covered in it in a wreck. I'm rambling... point is; none of this stuff will never be more than marginally feasible and it is a drain on taxpayers. Everybody acts like the next thing is gonna be like the first iPhone. It's not. We've been doing hydrogen cars for over 40 years and have nothing to show for it. Most of the "research " needs to be defunded.

Employ it if it works but it clearly does not so fund something that does. Like just designing for efficiency.

The artists impressions are misleading and lacking diversity as it fails to include any people in headscarves and hijabs that are the future of Berlin
