I know they're just people in costumes and make up but when I see these performers all dressed up, I can't help but think I'm stumbled on another race.

The acrobats do their own makeup. They do it about an hour before the first show and keep it all day. They do touch ups right before the second show, right after they ate.

Most likely to keep the bacteria out of the makeup and to prevent them from drying. If you were to keep creme palettes out, they would dry/crack and get all kind of dirty gunk in/growing on it.
