Hello and welcome to another video!
In this video we have something different and rather special, a rare trip around the Drax Power Station complex onboard a charity railtour in connection with the 50th anniversary of Drax Power Station and raising funds for Martin House Children's Hospice.
Organised by the Branch Line Society there were 3 railtours into Drax on Sunday 18th August 2024 and we follow these around the area in a separate video which will be published shortly after this one.
Our train was 1Z64 the 1708 from Wakefield Westgate to York via Drax and was hauled by Freightliner 66605, 70008, 66610, 66550 and GBRF 69011 between Wakefield and Drax. At Drax the 4 Freightliner locomotives were detached and LSLs 20118 and 20132 were added to the rear of the train. We then continued with 69011 providing the power to York.
Drax is the biggest and one of the most famous power plants in Britain, generating around 4% of electricity for the UK and it was fascinating to see the 12 huge cooling towers and 850ft chimney close up.
As Drax is a very secure site, we as passengers on the train were asked to remain seated while we toured through the power station complex. I chose to play music over the original audio as some of the conversations around me were not suitable to publish. I perhaps did not film as much as I'd like to have, but nevertheless, this is rare stuff.
