I believe Mike Elias wants to see all the prospects in spring training because there’s gonna be an infield battle for the starting second base and third base job between Westburg Ortiz, Norby, Holliday, mayo, Urias, and Mateo. This will give them more an updated information on the Enfield, clubhouse, chemistry, and who they will part with from that group. It’s also smart to see how cease looks in spring training. He’s at that age where we do have to worry about a ligament injury and Tommy John surgery may be smart to even wait to the Ulster break. I’d say 51% chance he gets traded before opening day at the end of spring training assuming he looks back to form. Otherwise it’s a 93% chance Cease is dealt by the deadline

Cease is not an ace guys. Nobody outside of Chicago views Cease as an ace. If you added him to the Orioles rotation right now, he'd be their #3 or #4 starter.

he may or not be an ace somewhere else, but that's a strange example to me. kyle gibson is off to st. louis, and dylan has better career stats than anybody left on the orioles at the moment. not sure if he can get back to what he did in 22, but he has non-trivial trade value. that much seems hard to debate.

@@saintseymour 2 years ago I'd agree with you. But Bradish just finished 4th in Cy Young and GRod was one of the best starters in baseball the last 3 months of the season after he figured out his pitch mix. They're both clearly better than Cease right now. John Means just came back from TJ surgery and looked better than ever. He had a 2.66 ERA in his 4 starts. I'd probably take Cease over Means, but it's close. Cease has some serious command issues.

@@brandondillman5841 all good points -- and i'm not saying cease would go there and be the guy. if he can get back to what he was doing in 22, he's better than all those guys. the question is which of the last two seasons was the fluke. the command issue is a problem. in fact it's *the* problem. i agree with you there. in any case, the sox have very few pieces worth a damn on the market--so i can understand waiting it out and asking for the world and then adjusting as the deadline approaches.

@@saintseymour If they knew for sure they were getting 2022 Cease they'd give up anybody not named Jackson Holliday for him right now. But it seems like every GM interested in Cease knows that's not likely. He's a good player that's shown flashes of greatness, but he's just so damn inconsistent. I'm sure a team like the O's would love to have him in the rotation, but he's not worth emptying out the farm for.

getz has inherited a 100 loss team heading for another 100 loss season with holes at multiple positions and a farm system at the bottom of the rankings. the idea that he has no reason to be desperate and can hold his asking price is completely unserious. nobody outside chicago is buying.

yeah he seems to be in over his head and GM's around the league are laughing. It's not like we're talking about a top 10 pitcher in baseball. Cease has been a league average pitching in his career and hid 1 great season in 2022. He doesn't have ace value.
