Excellent stuff, thank you. I used to fly GA out of Edinburgh back in the day, so it was great to see the systems now. The Glasgow crash the ATC Officer referenced was my ex-CFI - very tragic.

The last time I was in the NATS Cabin at Hack Green was 1962, watching this video brought much of it back. Yes, technology has changed, back then servicing controller's consoles was a pain whereas now the reliability must be 100 times better. Liked the electronic paper strips, what was missing was the card school, has the technology changed for that?

ATC are an amazing service. During PPL I was at a Class G cutout of Class C Airspace in Long Island, NY. For all X-C flights I called up Clearance Delivery on the ground and requested a Class C Transition, which got me higher than 1500 over the bay to Fire Island, NY. Each X-C flight I had flight following as well.

You might hear me routing down the Fife coast to enter at Kirkcaldy for a trip over the bridges in G-GBVX. My RT is crap. Imagine a Kelty lad with a pilots licence. “Awrite Edinburgh its me ken, can a come into your big circle thingy” Nah this is a great insight into the ATC world down there. I probably spoke to this controller many times and I bet he rolled his eyes when I stepped on everyones transmissions .

WHat would be the call if I have already called in??
@Boeing100aviation
@Boeing100aviation 5 лет назад
Great! That's what we hoped would be the key message for GA pilots: learn the workflow for ATC and understand the importance of calling up ahead to reduce workload. On you're first call, you can just say something along the lines of "Edinburgh Radar, G-BIIT request zone transit, you should have our details". Have a look at my glasgow transit video on my channel, I use similar phraseology. Though they would check anyways, it's their queue to press the "active" box per the video and they'll find your flight strip. Happy flying!

that's fantastic, and yes make sure to call ahead, will make everyone's life easier, and your first transit less stressful! Happy flying!
@RoadRunnerLaser
@RoadRunnerLaser 3 года назад
@@Boeing100aviation - It’s a year since I made that comment. I transit EGPH quite frequently, now, and I always call them on the phone prior to takeoff. If I get into the air and, for one reason or another (usually weather-related), I decide not to progress with my transit, I always call them and inform them of my change of intentions so that they can cancel my request from their system. They’re always helpful and accommodating, even when I ask them for a couple of orbits of Arthur’s Seat for my passengers.

On this chart.... www.clanlawrence.co.uk/images/EGPH_CTR.pdf That "Panhandles" are the sections of controlled airspace labelled "CTA-1" and "CTA-2". Basically the extended sections aligned with the main runway to the SW and NE.

Could you tell me How much the course is How long it takes Minimum school and health requirements Salary thanks
@Longbyname
@Longbyname 3 года назад
Edinburgh ATC is operated by National Air Traffic Service (NATS) so apply through them OR if you look up Global ATS, they are an independent college in the southwest of England that train future and current controllers through the relevant licences. The course length as it varies depending who you go with. I would say 18 months college work then on the job-training a further 18 months. School requirements in the UK is 5 GCSE’s. I’m not familiar with Scottish grades, probably the same so worth looking up. Health requirements is good health in general, good eyesight for one. And finally, the salary could again vary from £30k - 80k+ I’m not sure but I do know if you’re a radar controller in Prestwick or Swanwick you could potentially look at six figures salary. Hope this helps.
