Instagram- AdamTheWooATW I had a slight doubt that the self titled album cover wall looked like it could be a tad off . After reading some comments it appears I wasn’t alone . It’s tough to match up 40 year old walls but seems like I was on opposite side of the little garden from where it was . Anyone in the area should go confirm and document it . Clearly the opinions online are incorrect
I think you have the wall right. It is that side, however, if you were to go to 9:14 in your video, do you see in the upper right corner of that capture the indentation (the line of protruding brick) in the wall? Perhaps those plants were not there and this is where they might have stood. What do you think?
Im a lifelong New Yorker. I once was walking by the club just as Hilly was opening the doors at about noon. I asked him if I could hang out and have a few beers, and I wouldn't bother him. We walked in and I drank some beers as he did paperwork and made phone calls. I was quiet and didn't bother him. I had the whole place to myself and walked around. Great memory.
I saw The Ramones on November 7,1995 when they opened for Pearl Jam at the San Diego Sports Arena. Pearl Jam always had (still does) the highest respect for the Godfathers of Punk.
The band i was in opened for the Ramones at The Edge show, April of 94...insane how nice and down to earth they really were! Adam, I was the guy that said hi to you at the Dawn Of The Dead showing in Orlando at Regal, October 2023..i was wearing the Samhain tshirt. 😂
The Ramones were the soundtrack of my adolescence - the Ramones opened my eyes to a whole new world of music, a world that wasn't just all pop top 40 bubble gum stuff - punk was so different, so rebellious, I was instantly smitten
I went to rehab in 1988 with Joey. We shared a shrink Dr Jaeger. Holliswood Hospital. Is that a good thing? I don’t know about Joey but I’m clean 34 years and a few months. Moved out of nyc to SC 7 years ago. Don’t miss it one bit. I remember those places you’re showing. Littered with needles and vomit etc. So glad God helped me through it and I’m still alive 🤩😘
@@HeidiMcNulty1 Good job staying clean! If you hadn't made that choice odds are the 90s would have been the end of it. Hope life is everything you want!
Hi Adam, the weather couldn’t be more perfect for all your filming and documenting. These NYC videos are so good. I hope you keep going back to visit this incredible city. Thanks for all your hard work👍
Read about The Ramones in Rolling Stone magazine in spring of 75. Bought Ramone album at a flea market in South Carolina in 76. Faves for ever! Saw them live in 86. At 69, still put them on and rock hard! Gabba Gabba Hey!!!
These are the style vlogs I miss and love when you do them. NY is an amazing place so full of amazing history and food. There is always something to do. You would love living there at least part time, winters up north can def suck sometimes.
Having been to CBGB's music venue countless times and spent my late teens/20s in the Queens neighborhood when several of the Ramones lived there, I really appreciate this tour of the East Village. For old-timers like me, the birthplace/soul of punk is Tompkins Square Park, several blocks east of where you were. Thanks for the great vlog!
Looks like a beautiful spring day in New York.what a great city busy and busling as you always say a bee hive of activity.Thank you for taking us along on this great adventure. From Universal Jamie.
I once went to the old CBGB. The employees allowed me to take pictures but I put the camera in the trunk of my car and it was February and the cold damaged the film. I had a picture of the old bathroom and of one of the Gabba Gabba Hey signs. When I was outside, a woman offered to show me where the picture from the first album was taken. It was 9 pm and a stranger was taking me through the area in the dark to show me the location. You are pretty accurate with that brick wall. I had to look through the fence to see it. Thank you Adam. Great video!
Best live band ever. No 20 minute solos no preaching. They came, they saw, they kicked your ass! Saw the lads 6 times. I'm 53 years old and first heard them in 1980, rock n roll high school. They sent a 10 year old down the music rabbit hole. Gabba Gabba Hey!!
I love love love this series of videos in NYC and I love that you’ve visited some of the landmarks that were important to me (including the site of CBGB’s). Bravo sir!
Adam ... I just posted a comment on yesterday's video to you. But today you are covering the Ramones . In the early 80's I would hang out at Shea Stadium and get autographs on the side of the seats and who would hang out with me alot but none other then Johnny Ramone some nights he would say I can't stay long because I have a concert tonight. LOL .In the 90's I would see him at Baseball card shows and again he would not be not recognized but only by me as we knew each other.
Hey Adam!! This is an awesome video!! I had the pleasure of playing CBGB’s several times. Such a beautiful, dive bar with so much history. It sounded amazing in there and stickers and signatures of some great underground and mainstream bands!! It’s really cool!! Great video!! The load in must’ve been for signed bands because we always had to park in front and run our gear in before we got a ticket!! Let’s just say the city of NY got a good amount of parking ticket money from me. Lol!! Glad you got to see it!!
Yes. I remember helping a friend and his band mates loading in through the front. We sat there for hours in a basically empty venue waiting to go on. "You guys are next" is all we kept hearing. Midnight came around and they finally told us. No deal, come back another night maybe. Sucked, but that's just the way it was. The bathroom was epic. The hallway leading to it looked like something out of a horror movie. Saw the biggest rat I've ever seen crawl out of the wall in there. 😂
Hi Adam its great to see all of this in one day, your New York visit is awesome. I love the Ramones and Blondie and Taking Heads, CBGB is a landmark. Radio City music hall was great 👍 thanks for sharing. Stay safe and take care 🙏😎📸🤘
Former music critic, so I love this stuff too. Didn't really grow up with The Ramones or near NYC, but always heard about CBGB. Also JOHN VARVATOS is an upscale clothing store but Varvatos is a huge rock fan so he kept loads of memorabilia and still has live shows there. You can see a great tour of the inside on RU-vid here "CBGB tour with Sting, Brian Johnson & John Varvatos". Sting and The Police first played the club in 1978!
Hi Adam, it’s Larry from the tribute band Sedated. Saw you at the Chili Cook Off. CBGB’s was where the Dead Boys played and had a residency in the 70s. You said you never heard of them. They were the feature band in the movie CBGB from 2013. Highly recommended you watch that. Haha I had to go to 53rd and 3rd also! Was able to go inside CB’s in 2005 and shortly after they closed.
This Vlog gave me chills!!!! You just accomplished some of my bucket list today. I can believe you were standing at the former CBGBs!!!!😍 Well done Adam the Woo 🙌💯
You missed the Bad Brains Mural across the street from CBGB’s that just went up. And to bad you didn’t stay or go back to queens (Forest Hills) there is the famous and dedication mural of the Ramones, there is also where one of their first practice spaces was. Also, That concrete Marking outside of cb’s was later on added to mark the area. And you never loaded in in the back of cb’s you always loaded in the front because you could never get back there because of all the trash, glass, rebar, and such!
@@MamaCarola1 yea they just recently changed it because it had become a mess and unkept. That store now on that corner is a jcrew 🤦🏼♀️. We had offered to take him around when I met him at DS. As my husband had been playing shows there since 1991 and I’m hardcore/punk/metal photographer. My husband grew up in the city so he knows a lot as well especially the music scene! Bowery electric is down the block too owned by Jesse Malin who also owns Niagara (A7) the birthplace of ny hardcore. But then again there’s a lot to cover and only so much time!
@mieshie23 during the pandemic someone had decided to tag it but luckily it was cleaned up pretty quickly. There was some really great street art in the neighborhood but that was just ... no reason for that.
@@MamaCarola1 agreed! If you get a chance look up badbrains mural nyc! They did an amazing job of the new piece! Being from DC it’s a little slice of home for me!
Another cool video Adam👍🏻. I know how you feel. I remember going to see Cabaret at the old Studio 54. I couldn’t believe I was in the same place. Different look but still got that vibe of what it used to be and all the famous stars that used to venture to it .
Oh, Wow!! Shaun Cassidy wrote in his Autobiography of going to all of these places in Punk Rock scene way back with his brother, David,...who was at the time (Early 1970s). the most famous singer in the world
This was a great video. I love the Ramones. We are planning a trip to NYC next summer and CBGB'S was definitely a place where im going to visit. Thanks for the videos Adam.
Great video. Feel very fortunate to have seen The Ramones (1988) with The Crowd and The Adolescents and got to see Joe Strummer on his Earthquake Weather tour. Last time I ran into you at Disneyland, I was headed out to see Marky Ramone at The Obsrrvatory. Have a great day Adam
Adam, I was into punk rock here in the west coast with JFA Black Flag Social D etc. NOBODY can tell a story like you. I LOVED this episode of your Vlog. Thank you
lol you are bringing back memories of Eric’s in Liverpool , I saw stranglers, Siouxie and the banshees ,billy idol and generation x Amongst a few ,I started going to Eric’s in 1976 to 1978 ! I hadn’t thought about that time in my life for so long lol great vlog
Love the Ramones I grew up listen to them so it was so fascinating so learn some of the history of the group which by the way you did a fantastic job covering the history of the band also I really enjoyed looking at the photos on your phone which helped me understand in more detail what you were talking about so again thanks for a detailed look into the story of the legendary band who started it all in the punk decade the Ramones RIP Joey Ramone now with that peace ☮️ love ❤️ and happiness to you Adam and I’ll see you on the next awesome Adam the daily woo adventure peace ☮️ out ✌️
I visited it a couple of years ago from Scotland, legendary venue, can't believe it wasn't saved. Would have loved to have been there when the bands were playing !!!
I saw The Ramones 1977 at the Apollo Manchester England one of my all time favourite bands to this day and it is so interesting to see connected locations thank you so much
My friends band play there, about three months before they close. It was downstairs stage, not the main one, it was still cool to be there. Great video.
So great videos.... very ironic that we are both from FL ... you were in NJ not that long ago in my old stomping grounds, and now your in NYC also my old stomping grounds, keep up the amazing work Adam !!!
Great video. I live on Bleecker Street in another part of New York . Also the picture in The garden was most likely toward the end of the wall near the sidewalk. There is a smooth transition at the end. That is an actual jut out where you were thinking it was a shadow. They probably stripped the wall at some point and smooth over the rough edges. Guessing over time people were taking chunks of that brick. So they just removed that whole end and smoothed it over. Thanks for the share.
I saw the Ramon's twice. March 24th 1989 Madill hall, St Lawrence university, New York. then June 13 ,1996 Lollapalooza, Syracuse NY. Both Up State NY shows. I think the Lollapalooza tour dates for the Ramones were some of the last shows they played. Don't quote me on that. Great band. So happy I got to see them live twice. The St Lawrence university show was the best. It was held literally in a gymnasium. Like one of those gyms you had in high school that doubled as the autotorum with a stage at one end of the gym. It was great!
I got to go inside CBGB'S before it closed, I even signed the petition to make it a landmark. Summer of 2004, we went to NYC for our Senior trip. It was the only place I was adamant about getting to see while I was there.
Well Hello!!! So much enjoyed this video... Went from 20 minutes outside NYC to Tampa My son is a musician and opened for the Misfits and we knew Marky Ramone and cooked burgers with Jerry Only, I'm more of a Blondie fan but the blocks you visited is home to us! Thanks for the video!
I love your video, I am planning on going to NYC next year with the kids and surely I will be going to most of the places you showed on the video, thanks for that!!! I was also born in 1974, July 31st .... I was being created at same time as the whole band, and also same as you ... there should be something ..... Greetings from Spain.
I played there in 95. Greatest staff ever! They enjoyed us so much they invited us to an after hours party in a dive bar the size of a small bedroom. Great times.
Just discovered your channel! You are on the corner I travel to for Memorial Sloan Kettering Treatment site visits. Cancer free thankfully. 👍 Looking forward to watching your videos!
It’s nice to see your video but also makes me sad and yearn for the gritty days of the 70’s New York. The Ramones were great and have achieved a mainstream audience now but we that know them in their hey day will never forget them. I got to see them once at the state fair in Detroit. Not their heyday but at least I can say I saw them. Gabba gabba hey!
I am really glad you documented CBGBs Adam. I have seen Patti Smith in the day. I also got to speak (YES I said SPEAK!) to Debra Harry one enchanted evening. Yep, yep, yep. However, I never did get to go to this club while it existed. I was so sad the day I heard it was it's last week and then closed. YOU are a ROCK STAR, you ROCK STAR! You go Adam! (the comment is over) Love you dude, A.(extra comment footage:)🎸🪨and 🌯(rock and roll, Baby!)👶
I saw the Ramones in maybe like 83 or 84...at the Rainbow Music Hall in Denver. I was concerned about Joey, so pale and thin...😅 ICONIC!! I was a punk rocker....
Had a striking thought to see how big cbgbs was. Haven’t seen a woo video in a while. Ramones are also one of my favorites. Appreciate the crossover and history
For sure it’s a very nice pedestrian city.. I walk many times from Battery Park all the way to Central Park and once from Brooklyn Bridge to Harlem.. You get your steps in, for sure.. But also a very easy city to drive in, because of all the one way streets.. I’ve been overthere 5 times.. and 2 times I rented a Mustang and drove around on Manhattan with the roof down.. Pretty fun..😎 Love that city 😍
Great video, looks like you've put in a lot of planning for this series! I made sure to stop by 53rd & 3rd when I last visited NYC in 2013. My Wife took a photo; not sure where that is at this point! She walked down the isle at our Wedding to "Baby, I Love You" by the Ramones (my second favourite band behind Iron Maiden) and we walked back up to "Whatsername" by Green Day. I'd love to go back and visit more locations, especially some from a favourite movie of mine, "Hackers" from 1995.
@@bigscarysteve yes, I'm aware of the import of the song. That, and I understand it was also a pick-up zone for male prostitutes. As Adam says in the video however, a much more gentrified area now.
HEY ATW...YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT THE RAMONES BEING an original influence on punk! I remember hearing them for the first time in and around 1980. This episode was great! Your step counter must ready to explode!!
Adam, you are now looking at the remnants of my high school youth. I saw The Ramones at CBGB's back around '75-'76. The whole area where you are walking literally was a no mans land, but despite that It was where we could go. The shameful thing is that there were a lot of other cool venues that no longer exist. Anyway.. Hope you and Jay are having a blast up there, my old hometown (I'm now in SWFL, BTW)
I'm really digging the NYC vlogs. I lived in the E. Village for 10 years or so, studied music there, so it's all so familiar. It's not what it used to be but it's still one of the best cities in the world.
I had the pleasure of seeing The Ramones in person at the El Dorado Saloon in Carmichael California near Sacramento in 1986. I literally stood against the tiny low profile tiny nightclub stage in the shopping center strip mall club venue that was packed shoulder to shoulder. I kept getting slapped across the face with Joey Ramone's leather jacket metal studs and zippers and having sweat slung on me since I was literally inches away. It was GLORIOUS!
Great vlog Adam. But you were also standing right outside the legendary A7 club which was the stomping ground for a lot of early hardcore bands. It is now a bar but bears a plaque with a list of frequented hardcore bands on their wall. The bar is now called Niagara, corner of Ave A and 7th (Tompkins Square Park)
Thanks for the Punk Rock history lesson! I always thought the Ramones were from Britain. I had no idea they were from NY. The only think I remember about the Punk Rock era was my classmate was really into the Dead Kennedy's and that was around 1980.
YESSSS!!! I was just going to ask in your previous NYC video if you were going to make a punk rock pilgrimage to the punk rock shrine of CBGB's since you yourself were in a punk band.
