That was a great tour and very meaningful to me. My parents built that house and we lived there until after they divorced. A few details are incorrect though. In the foyer, a huge built in aquarium was in the wall where the shelves are now. The living room had white carpeting but the den ( fireplace and brick floor) is exactly the same. Mom didn’t have a separate bedroom. They shared the master and it was painted black. Dad wanted it to feel like they were sleeping under the stars. The bedroom they’re saying was moms was actually Shared by Rosanne and me. It was our room with a pink tile bathroom. The doors to outside from both suites were added after we moved. We didn’t have a pool when we lived there. The little “shed” by the pool was our playhouse. Dad had it built for us. Dads office is exactly the same. The outside bedroom, bath and closet was for our live in housekeeper. The room with the skylight was where we had a pool table. I really enjoyed this tour. I haven’t been in the house since the late 1960’s so it was very sweet to be able to tour it. Thanks so much! Kathy

Be wildly comfortable for anybody.Old fellow who lives up the road from me here in rural Wyoming claims to worked on the getting the property grounds prepped up and ready to go. So he claims to have meet the owner Mr. Cash at the time. Small world.

Awe, that is so cool and so sweet to hear you were able to see this and will have it now whenever you want to look back!!! I was going to guess he wanted the ceilings to have the sparkle on them so he could look up and see them and feel like he was outside under the night sky and all of it's stars. the farther from cities you get, the more stars you can see. I bet he grew up in Arkansas back then with mostly small tows scattered and so he would have had a huge galaxy of stars filled sky every night!!! ALL of my love, big ole hugs and blessings of the LORD to you and yours, today and always!!!

@@dynodish No, the fire he caused was in 1965. It burned 508 acres in the Los Padres National Forest. The fire was in the Condor Sanctuary. Cash was ordered to pay $82,000 in damages. Adjusted for inflation this would be $500,000 today.

You would see the "popcorn" sparkle ceilings in all the 1960's suburb sub-division homes. When the homes would eventually change hands, the first thing to go was those ceilings. I heard that the popcorn material contained asbestos and that was one of the reasons new owners wanted them gone. That, and changing tastes made these ceiling outdated.

I grew up in Ojai so everyone in the valley was familiar with this home. I certainly wouldn't call it a mountain hideaway. It is so sad to see Casitas Springs rotting away. It never was very big. When I was a kid they hadn't finished the freeway which now runs past Foster Park. It was just a two lane road. We used to ride out bikes from Ojai to Ventura and back - a really long bike ride. Back in the 60's there was even a small airport (Henderson field) which is now a trailer park in Mira Monte. Ojai is struggling to keep its character despite all these people moving there who want to make it like LA..

My family built our house in California in the late 60’s-early 70’s, and it had the same sparkly popcorn ceilings. We were very middle class, and when I asked my dad why he had the ceilings done that way, he said it was both for insulating and acoustic purposes. Some builders said they had asbestos in them, others said they were perfectly safe. They were awful to clean, as everything stuck to them, including cobwebs!

Awesome Jordan!! What timing. I just now finished John Carter Cash's "House of Cash" and have been on another Johnny kick with the CD set Love, God, Murder and my old Cash vinyl. Back in early '90 I begged off a Saturday lunch shift at my restaurant as my band had a gig that night. Robert Duvall had been a regular customer of mine while filming Days of Thunder. Well he came in that Saturday and brought lunch guests. And by guests I mean Johnny and June Carter Cash and Waylon Jennings and Jesse Colter. I was livid for giving up that shift. My buddy took a picture of them all to rub it in.

The trouble with glitter ceilings is keeping the glitter over time. Whether we like it or not, even ceilings get their share of dust build up, as well as the oxidation of the sparkling metal to keep the appearance loosing its luster. Most people without the "live-in housekeeper" like the Cash's had, like myself, would prefer a lower maintenance affair with a smoother finish that could be cleaned with a Swiffer product in less then an hour.

Adam sure reminds me of Errol Flynn! Something else that comes to mind, is the fact that even the "super wealthy" used to live pretty much like everyone else. That certainly was a beautiful home for it's day, but nowhere near "overblown", like people CONvinced themselves they needed by the late Nineties.... And it's even worse now. It's also kind of touching to know that Johnny and Vivian's kids thought it weird to be "up above" everyone down the hill in the trailer court... Very human of them!

Great video Jordan. Love Johnny cash and June carter cash. My great grandma Frost was first or second cousins with maybelle Carter and my grandparents, when they was younger and my dad and his 2 brothers was really young, they took a trip down to Tennessee and they visited with Johnny and June and other family and they went to Johnny and June's house and they seen one of the first microwaves that was made. Love the video, keep up the great work you do.

Those acoustic ceilings were all the rage back then. I remember my parents buying a house and had the acoustic ceilings blown in, minus the sparkles. Then when I bought a house it had that tyro of ceiling and we had to scrape it all off by hand. What a mess. I never like those type of ceilings because the dust would build up and they would be dingy. It’s funny for some reason I thought his house would have been much much bigger. Thanks for the video my daughter is 16 and she’s a big Johnny cash fan. I shared this video with her.

This was so exciting to see. I have read a lot about his wife and children. Johnny wasn’t around much and it was sad Vivian had to be alone with the children. She of course had plenty of money but she wanted her husband home to be a family. She sounded like a wonderful woman and great mother. It’s a shame that June Carter wanted him too. Thanks for sharing this great video.

What a peace of history! When you get homes like these you shouldn't alter anything ! What a shame Jonny's famous black ceiling was updated to someone else's liking! Very disappointing to see that! I would've rathered see it in it's original condition the way Jonny had it ! I hope whoever does buy this home respectfully restores it back exactly the way it once was !

when we redid our living room I was so sad to get rid of our sparkle ceiling and we figured out how to paint and reapply gold sparkles using a cut out big square box with a silk scarf covering one end so that as we painted we could blow up sparkles using the high setting on our hair dryer through the scarf and they would fall back into the box if they didnt stick -- turned out great! -- Lol my hubby and his friend have long beards so when they were done they had sparkles all through them -- Haaaaa

In the movie Walk The Line it made it seem like they already lived in Memphis because of the Sun Records scene. It says that Johnny and Vivian moved to Memphis in 1954. So did Johnny and Vivian live here or in Texas before that . . .

Wow, Johnny Cash's crapper in your living room! I thinks it was a great idea to keep his closet black, but I would have to repaint the bedroom too. I wouldn't have done the blue either, but making the bathroom pink again is for sure. The original tiles and tub would be no good, but I would re-create the original look. They were still "together" with the doors going to private pool area. Sleeping together was probably preferred by them too, but I can see Johnny being a nighthawk and restless sleeper and his wife an early to bed/rise type. They probably slept together at times but having your own space is wonderful too! But when Johnny got with June and she got with the security guy, I guess it was a necessity. I for one would love to own the house and would just restore, but re-paint the bedroom again.

Have you ever covered the time Johnny's family was held hostage in Jamaica? I always thought that would make a good movie. I am pretty sure that was with June. I am surprised that since he had security in a place like Casitas Springs he wouldn't have in Jamaica where it was probably much less safe.
