Queen Jane lay in labor full nine days or more
'Til her women grew so tired, they could no longer there
They could no longer there
"Good women, good women, good women that you may be
Will you open my right side and find my baby?
And find my baby
"Oh no," cried the women, "That's a thing that can never be
We will call on King Henry and hear what he may say
And hear what he may say"
King Henry was sent for, King Henry he did come
Saying, "What does ail you my lady? Your eyes, they look so dim
Your eyes, they look so dim"
"King Henry, King Henry, will you do one thing for me?
Will you open my right side and find my baby
And find my baby"
"Oh no, cried King Henry, "That's a thing that i can never do
If I lose the flower of England, I shall lose the branch too
I shall lose the branch too"
There was fiddling, aye, and dancing on the day the babe was born
But poor Queen Jane beloved lay cold as a stone
Lay cold as a stone

This scene is designed to intentionally mislead you. It's supposed to feel like a turning point for Llewyn. The shots push in closer and closer to him and Grossman, making you feel like he's touched by the music. Llewyn even gets more confident as he plays, making eye contact more and more. You feel like after all the shit he's been through, maybe he'll finally get his big break. Then they hit you with that harsh line at the end. Great stuff by the Coen bros.
@jrizzy626
@jrizzy626 3 года назад
I think you’re right on. Llewen’s face at the end of the song shows that he put all of his soul and emotion in to it, that he’s proud of it, and that someone is finally going to recognize his greatness. Then after “I don’t see a lot of money here,” his soul is crushed once again, but he’s used it. Absolutely brilliant acting.

What I love about this scene and the final crushing dialogue, is the fact that Grossman WAS actually touched by the music. He doesn't say "you've got no talent" or "I'm sorry but it just doesn't sound good." He pretty much says the opposite: "you are a true artist, and that's why I don't see a lot of money here. "
@darkmikerises
@darkmikerises 8 месяцев назад
I wouldn’t go as far as to say he thinks of him as a true artist. Grossman just wants musicians that make him money. Llewyn didn’t have it. At least in Bud’s opinion…
@jugurthasyphax6341
@jugurthasyphax6341 7 месяцев назад
I think what the scene means is talent is not enough. You need originality. There were hundreds of folk singers like Llewyn endlessly covering the same folk songbook. Bob Dylan made it because his original songwriting made him stand apart. Same for the Beatles. They realized they were never gonna make it as long as they covered the same Buddy Holly songs as everyone else, no matter how good the singing and playing was. The money was in new songs and new sound.
@cody8804

I don’t think Grossman cared at all. He’s extremely dismissive. There’s nothing in his voice or demeanor that says he was moved by the song in the slightest

He did actually think for a second that life gave him a chance that it's gonna get better and someone will finally recognize the beauty he sees in his performance even i was happy cause i did think he's finally gonna make it, It's sad how he actually had hope and after giving him his best performance and it was really really beautiful it just wasn't enough, he realized that he's just not good enough and all the hope he had for a second turned to frustration and pain all with one sentence and now he's back again to his miserable reality. All this in three minutes, god i love this movie.

this scene can only work if the actor is capable of being a great musician. the performance of this song is magical, no one else could play it and sing it like this. its truely beutifull. and then follows the tragic reality of life that the guy listening is only interested in money and how sellable it could be. but his focus on the performance leads you to believe he is capivated by its beuty. this is great movie making of the highest level.

The song choice is a really incisive piece of characterisation here. He has a chance to impress somebody, and if he can do that, he can make a career out of what he loves. And he chooses a song which he thinks will show the most important part about himself, and about folk music as he sees it - something traditional, and really authentic. Only Grossman is a businessman, and what is most important for him is something that will sell. I think this song and 'Please Mr Kennedy', more than any other pair, demonstrate the opposite tensions pulling at folk music at this time, and right in the middle we have Llewyn, caught between his dream and what he sees as his principles.

I think this song has more symbolism to the story than a lot of people interpret. In the song, the women and the king can’t let go of the queen to let the baby be born. But in the end, the baby was born and the people celebrated despite the queen dying. In parallel, Llewyn can’t let go of Mike. But in letting go (not forgetting him, but moving on to the next chapter of his life) he himself could have a rebirth as a musician. In the end, the song has an optimistic outlook that something joyous can come out of tragedy, and maybe that could be the case for Llewyn.
@cody8804
@cody8804 6 месяцев назад
I always tied the lyrics of the song to him knowing Jean is about to abort his baby (or have the baby without Llewyn in their life, either way they aren’t in his life). Somehow the song ties in to all that in ways I can’t quite put into words.
@dmitch1990
@dmitch1990 Месяц назад
That's a very astute interpretation. Immediately after Salieri rejects Llewyn as a solo act, he gives him an opportunity to be in Peter, Paul, and Mary, which Llewyn rejects because, after Mike, he doesn't want to be part of another group act.

If Dave van Ronk was around for the folk resurgence of this century he probably would have made it. Even if he didnt get signed today, with how the framework of distribution has changed, he probably would have still found an audience and been successful. Dave's story is the story of many of the folk artists of that decade. Pop music moved on to fast and record labels were not interested in non-commercial music. To me , the story of Inside Llewyn Davis is largely about what it was like to be a potential superstar and miss your window. Just look at his lifestyle , hes 'all in', but its too late. He was even thrown a chance for his talent, but his trauma with his old partners passing probably prevented him from seeing it that way. If its any consolation, Dave did have moderate success throughout his career. I don't actually know how accurate the story was.

Have a feeling Abraham was cast to intentionally play the same role that he played in Amadeus. In a position to hamstring another Mozart all over again, crush his spirit and send him into a spiral. except if you knew what he offered Oscar, it was far greater success than he ever could have obtained playing his uniformly lugubrious playlist. trim his hair to a goatee, sing some harmonies, join a trio -- that would be Peter, Paul & Mary. Grossman was a real person. and in 1961, the year this movie was set in with a fictional lead but supporting characters -- from Jim and Jean, to Mike Porco, to Grossman, to Dylan at the very end -- were real people too, and Grossman was in fact putting Peter, Paul & Mary together. that's what Llewyn turned down.
