A visit to St Bartholomew the Great in Smithfield - the oldest place of continuous worship in London.
St Bartholomew the Great was founded in 1123 by a courtier of Henry I called Rahere. Depending on how you judge such things it’s oldest church in London that has held continuous services. All Hallows by the Tower is built on the site of a 7th Century Saxon church and there was a church of similar age where St Paul’s Cathedral stands today.
Rahere developed a fever during his pilgrimage and in the grip of his illness vowed to build a church for a poor in London if he recovered. On his journey back to London he had a vision of the Apostle Bartholomew who commanded him to build a church upon the ’Smooth field’, Smithfield.
The artist Damien Hirst created a gold statue of St Bartholomew called Exquisite Pain that is currently on loan to the church.
King Henry I supported the building of the church, priory and hospital of St Bartholomew which started in 1123. The church was only partially complete at the time of Rahere’s death in 1145. He still resides in the church in a tomb that was rebuilt in 1405.
The Priory was dissolved in 1539, and the nave of the church was demolished. The rest of the church and priory were mostly preserved.

I started at St.Bartholomew’s Hospital as a student nurse in 1978,and afterwards as a nurse.I think that I speak for everyone who has ever worked or been a patient there, that this abbey church as well as St.Bartholomew the Less church also on the site;holds a very special place in all our hearts.

My brother was a doctor at Bart’s hospital in the 70s and he became a verger at the St Bartholomew the Lesser, then got moved to St Bartholomew the Great as a verger. He passed away at the age 27 and the church held a service for him..

Lovely video. I have fond memories of stumbling into this building on a warm spring day in 1994. I was an American student studying in Nottingham, and thanks to a rail strike and sunny weather the City of London was quite empty of workers. Subsequently, I felt like I had the city to myself after catching one of the few trains running into St Pancras that day. The memory is a joy.

I used to work nearby about 20 years ago and my office had a view over the churchyard. I'm ashamed to say I never went inside. A touch ironic as I've travelled thousands of miles to see temples in India. This video has inspired me to remedy that when I'm next in the vicinity of the Barbican.

As well as all predating the reformation and only numbering five, the bells are also unusual in being hung in an anticlockwise circle. I had the pleasure of ringing them several times back in the late 80s and early 90s. Unfortunately the bells you hear in "Four Weddings and a Funeral" aren't actually St Barts though.

our great grandparents lived just a few houses down on Cloth Fair from about 1900-1906. I'm amazed still at this church. Their front door was just opposite where Lady Chapel is, 2 doors down from The Dick Whittington pub, their local. Thank you John for filling in some of the church history for me. Always love seeing info on this area. Incredible church

My school The Gatehouse started in, not surprisingly the gatehouse of the church, later moving to Dalington Street - we did our Nativity plays here every year as the Head mistress, Phyliss Wallbank was married to the Prebendary Newell Wallbank (a noted musician and scholar of the pipe organ, so Wiki tells me). Such a beautiful place.
