If you are a peaceful protester, your voice, your message, is being silenced by violent rioters, not the police. The police are reacting to the violent criminals, and so should you, if you want your voice to be heard.
Imagine you are inside a building. Now, imagine someone tries to light it on fire while you are in it. If you have ever been in a burning building you know how panic inducing this could be. Now, imagine you go outside to get those lighting your building on fire to stop. They surround you. Everywhere in front of you is a sea of bodies seething with anger. They scream obscenities at you. Bricks and objects fly out of the darkness at your face. Fireworks and explosions crackle and boom around you. Something hits you. It feels like a rock, but no, its frozen water wrapped in a bottle. You did not and could not see it coming because of the lights being flashed in your face. Fireworks scorch your exposed skin. The yelling and screaming are as constant as the snaps and pops of what feel like explosions going off all around you. Burning trash is flung at you. Refuse, some of it on fire, is everywhere and you try to avoid falling down because you fear they will attack you or that the broken glass strewn about will cut you. Imagine that you and your fellows finally get them to back off and you go back in your building. Now imagine you are considered the aggressor in this situation. Your very presence marks you as such. Your elected officials decry your actions. The majority of the media demeans you. You heartless Stormtrooper! Don't you know those poor folks are just "Protesting"?
This whole story is reminiscent of a horror movie. Zombies show up at night and come to destroy, burn, kill. During the day there is calm. No zombies or vampires. Everyone is sleeping, resting tired. Evening is coming - everyone comes out of their caves.
There is not discussing anything with the ones who go out at night and do this they have demands and are holding it hostage with violence and threats of upping that violence unless, those demands are met. They do NOT want to talk. Some of the actual peaceful protesters do leave room to talk and at least listen, even though they as well don't plan or want to budge on anything and have over the months even upped their demands. It is very much like a hostage situation of the area in general. Meet our demands or else.
we had a curfew for a little while, maybe a couple of days or a week, at the very beginning of riots (couple months ago). ted wheeler is an absolute buffoon, all the city commissioners are idiots. im an old school feminist, certainly not a conservative, and this “liberal” city disgusts me. the people here care nothing but their image and themselves. none of these rioters care about “people of color”, cause they might hear us begging for this violence to end.
The problem with curfews is it targets and assumed everyone out is up to no good. No, the worthless portland politicains and cops need to leave their actual citizens alone, and instead focus on dealing with this armed and violent communist insurrection. This problem would be intensely easy to deal with, if the cops just shot or arrested the rioters while they're rioting. All a curfew would do is punish the innocent, non-criminals in the city, and ignore the actual problem.
Sadly this guy is living in a dreamworld about a “discussion”. We need much much more then a discussion. We need to eliminate the threat to democracy, constitutional democracy.

I'm from England and I've visited Portland and Oregon and its an amazing place. But from my perspective the majority in Portland voted FOR this. It is a wonderful state and while Idaho is as well it would be a shame to see this all change just because of these riots.
The community and law enforcement can come together to talk. However, the riots are from kids who have no concept of community, no idea how to debate, and no ability to accept criticism for what they are doing. They don’t want peace, or justice, they want to roam the streets without law and without penalty of crime. They want police to leave the city without caring what happens next, because they haven’t thought that far. Even if everyone showed up to talk at a table, these kids would not be there, they could care less.
Real people, human beings work in that building. Federal Protective Service has a responsibility to protect the people who work in that building. It wasn't until the FPS was overwhelmed and had to ask for back-up, other agents were sent in. Rocks, concrete, commercial-grade fireworks are thrown at these agents that have the potential to kill. Rioters constantly try to set the building on fire with people INSIDE! That's attempted murder and people are whining about tear gas and rubber bullets?!?! First of all, in terms of riot control tools, non-lethal doesn't mean painless. The only "painless" control tool law enforcement has is loud speakers telling the crowds to disperse and rioters don't listen to that. Second, the things that are being hurled at these officers are deadly. Bricks vs rubber bullets and tear gas? The rioters get off easy. These agents are human beings. They're just trying to do their jobs. There's a difference between the rioters and the agents. The rioters want to murder these federal officers and the officers just want the rioters to leave the federal building alone and go home. And the feds are the bad guys in this scenario? I don't think so.

The city residents and businesses owners should sue the city officials for failing to enforce law and order and protect them from the thugs and other criminal elements. 😡 Next, request help from the Federal Government to send in Federal troops to stop the looters, rioters and thugs from destroying their homes and businesses. 😡

Very few people want to label this what it is, and that is understandable. It goes against human nature to believe that other people are capable of being violent just for violence’s sake. I thought that too until mid-2003 in Iraq. Some people are beyond reasonable, and will hide behind those that are. Some people only understand counter violence. As hard as that is to accept, our human history attests to its validity.

Not suprising there has always been an anarchist community in Portland.I am old enough to remember when downtown Portland had a thriving business and retail community that is all gone now.

Assistant US Attorney Scott Asphaug, you’re right. Dialogue is definitely preferable to the disaster we see before us. How did this happen? How does a civilized nation arrive to such a debased level of mentality? You know, I myself, am in a situation for which I don’t know who to talk to about - anyone who can actually do something in gaining a solution, that is. I have my American name. And, I have my Italian name. Or, would it be clearer if I were to say, I have my Arabic-Jewish-Italian-American name; and, I have my Italian name? There’s the first and last names I grew up with, Imran Troncelliti. Which, I had updated my ODL to include my Italian last name as my middle name. And, there’s my birth first and last names. The legalities of the merger of my names, I believe, should be dealt with within the US. Perhaps, could it happen through a re-immigration process? Of which, I started back in 2009 through the Naples, Italy office. For which, I am deeply unsatisfied. Thus, I’ve put it on ice. (Pun intended) Until, that is, the process is fair and favorable to me. Because, my gut tells me the re-immigration I started feels like it’s burying my history; and, completely dehumanizing my person.
