I got this backpack for a 50-ish km trek up Croatia's highest mountain this October. It is extremely well built, had it packed out but it rode so nicely on my back. However, it turned out to be too small for my needs and now I'm already selling it - totally my mistake, it is a wonderful piece of kit! Props to Mammut, everyone on the verge of getting it I hope my experience pushes you over the edge and you decide to get it.
Bought this after watching this video review and have now had a chance to try this on a 12k walk. My previous rucksack always made my shoulders ache even on lesser distances. This one is so comfortable. Fantastic product!
Nice review! Solid job. For whatever it's worth, persuaded me. That's about as close as I can get without actually physically interacting with the thing.
I bought it in an outlet and hiked the Kilimanjaro with it, only to find out additional useful features in your video afterwards. This will help me in the future, thanks a lot for the quality content!
Great and detailed review. I’ve had this exact pack for 3 years and use it almost every day when walking the dog to hiking in all weathers. It’s brilliant and the spine system is a game changer as is all the straps to alter the fit and to compress and keep the load stable. Only issue I have is it creaking now which does annoy me. Still nice sure how to stop and I have tried lubricating the pivots on the spine system.
Glad you're enjoying it, apart from the creaking! Might be worth dropping Mammut Customer Service an email as they might have some helpful advice on alleviating the creak. it's not something that we've heard back as feedback before about the Spine, but hopefully its an easy fix so you can continue enjoying your pack.
Outstanding, couldn’t be happier.Comes with me on all my hikes, rattling through the Wainwrights the past 2 years and just last weekend did the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge trekking 25 miles 10 hours climbing 5400ft and the pack was solid and comfortable as always at all times with no niggles or rubbing. When or if it ever gives up on me I will be grabbing another but it looks like I’ve got plenty more years and miles of hiking left in it as apart from being a little dirty it’s as good as new.👍🏼
@@trekitt just got mine but on the website it didn’t offer a “size”’option. I can’t find any manuals online. How do I know I got the same 48.5cm you have in the video?? The SKU on the label is 253000340000871000 Number next to bar code is 7930 2 Can you help me?! Thanks.
Hi Oliver. You didn't miss it, I didn't point out that the exit port for the hydration tube is actually where that H2O is written on the side of the pack. Thanks for you watching. Paul.
If you add subtitles in Turkish, you will be watched very much.Because this is a developing sport, and their need this equipment,ı can see, you are doing very detailed examinations.I don't know English, I used translation👋
Hi Nick, we now have plenty in stock - www.trekitt.co.uk/rucksacks/technical-packs/mammut-ducan-spine-28-35-granitblack__39427 Thanks for watching. Paul
@@trekitt Bought the 50-60, can’t wait I to use it. Quick question, what is the black clip used for on the left shoulder strap. Thought it was for the drinking tube but that is on the right strap. Thanks
Non-adjustable back length is where you lost me. Have you considered having Aarn packs? Really good back systems (adjustable) and u-flow straps - used under licence by Black Diamond. They haven't had UK representation for several years now (hint). I need something bigger than my 10 year old MM11 and am thinking of purchasing directly from Aarn themselves (New Zealand) or from an Australian retailer.
Great review! I m considering buying 50-60l womens version, but it seems like there is only one torso size. My osprey backpack is M/L I am worried it will be too small and won’t fit me well. What do you think? Worth taking the risk?
I've had a look and can't find any measurements for the length of the Spine 50-60, so you may have to order, try on and then send back if it isn't quite right, or give Mammut a ring to see if they have this info. Unfortunately we're out of stock so I can't even measure it. Sorry!
There's no adjustability I'm afraid. You may be better off with an alternative with an adjustable back length; we've got a wide range from Osprey, Lowe Alpine, Deuter and a few more. We've also got a good video about how to fit your rucksack which I'll pop below. Harry ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Sl1yJakKp-4.html
Your reviews are the Elephants what's its Paul....i have been using the Arcteryx Bora 65 for a while now and the top shoulder straps hit me in the face and eyes when its very windy which is painful so i have to wear sunglasses but that's a pain sometimes because i only have the bright sunlight lense so i bought one of these for lighter summer use but mine doesn't have that sign on for using the app....i was told its the updated model too.....have Mammut stopped that now ?
I wouldn't recommend it; the hipbelt will sit in the wrong place and it'd end up bouncing around. I'd recommend having a look at Montane's Trailblazer which can be used as both a walking and running pack; I'll pop a link to it below. Kind regards, Harry. www.trekitt.co.uk/36921/products/montane-trailblazer-30-charcoalfirefly-orange.aspx
Hi!! very useful and lovely video, thanks! Could you give us some information about the differences between the woman's model and the man's model? After your review I REALLY want this backpack but I need to understand if there are any substantial differences because otherwise I buy the men's model because I prefer the colors
Hi, The only difference between the two packs is the fit and shape is specific for men vs women. The back length on the women's model is shorter, and the shoulder straps have a slightly different shape to complement a women's fit. Thanks, Trekitt.
Both Mammut packs would be good-the spine would give you some extra storage if you felt like you needed to pack a few more items. I've not used the Jade and I'm afraid so I won't be much help there.
Great review! I have read a few reviews where people complained of the harness breaking at the thinnest point at the centre, effectively rendering the backpack useless. A few also stated that due to the constant spine movement at the joint, the harness starts producing a squeaky sound with time. Have you faced any such issues over time? If not, can you visualise these being common, possible issues or do you think the harness system is sturdy and these are probably just one off cases?
How well would this bag work for photographers? Could you fit a smallish tripod on the bottom / back? I saw another vid on RU-vid by a photographer using the Trion Spine as a camera bag. It looked great, but the Trion doesn't have the side pockets and light weight of the Ducan.
You could fit a tripod in the side bottle pocket, but every time you need to open the pack from the top, it would flop over. Personally, I'd opt for the Fjallraven Abisko Friluft (either 35 or 45). It's what I use and it's a flawless camera bag. Harry
@@trekitt Interesting and good nudge towards the Fjallraven as I hadn't come across that one yet. Is it as comfy for hikes as the Mammut Spine system? It looks really similar to the Trion Spine
@@bradk7462 Rucksacks are a little like footwear - it's best to try a few on until you find the right one. It fits me really well and I love the backsystem/hipbelt design, but I can't guarantee it'll fit you perfectly/be as comfortable as I find it.
Hi Graham. Admittedly I had to find Dana Design packs using an internet archive, and it looks like they had some radical and interesting packs. proving that there is no such thing as an original idea.
Great video, in fact all of your reviews are top notch. I'm thinking of buying this off your site. The only thing that concerns me is the 'one size' of the spine system. I'm 190cm and my torso is about 50cm, so would it be a good fit?
Hi Simon, the Ducan is a great pack. I am also 190cm tall, but have a torso length of 47cm and the Ducan is just a tad too long for me. I would suggest that with a torso length of 50cm that you'd be OK. Thanks for watching. Paul.
I don’t understand The point Of The waterproof top locking mechanism, when you have a long zipper down on The front Of The backpack which is not waterproof.
how does this pack compare to the exped lightining? i think only you can answer that question.. exped is lighter and probably more durable . which pack would you recomend if price wasnt an issue? thanks.
They seem to have the woman versions of this pack. Do you know if they are different than the regular one. The colour I am looking for this model only available in woman version but I still could not figure out the main difference as they only come in one size. Would love to hear from you. Thanks
Both the Men's and Women's are available in Granit/Black; the version used in the video was the Men's version. The Men's pack has a longer back length and a slightly different shape, whereas the Women's version is shorter and is more suited to the female frame. I'll pop a link to our entire range below. Kind regards, Harry. www.trekitt.co.uk/facetresults.aspx?Term=DUCAN%20SPINE
They're made by Arc'teryx but unfortunately I don't know the exact model. They look a little like these: trekitt.co.uk/clothing/trousers-shorts/arcteryx-mens-stowe-short-95-in-cinder__42114
@@trekitt I just received official answer from Mammut that this backpack is compatible with Helmet Holder. I'm afraid I still don't get it how to connect these things together, but it's a good news. :)
Hi@@38201270298, There are 4 orange loops that the compression cord runs through, we would assume you can use these to attach the helmet holder. We will find out for you tomorrow to confirm. All the best, Will
Hey@@38201270298 , We tested it out this morning for you, we can confirm that clips on the Helmet Holder attach to the 4 orange loops that the compression cord runs through on the pack and would sit on the front of the pack. Similar to how it's hock on in the second product image on this page. www.trekitt.co.uk/38889/products/mammut-helmet-holder-pro-black.aspx All the best, Will
Great review! I was sure about buying the gregory optic 58 but after seeing this one... The optic is 100€ cheaper and about 400g lighter but this looks more comfortable and better build... Not an easy choice. Can you help me with this?
Unfortunately we don't stock the Optic, so it'd be hard to offer a proper comparison between the two. I'd recommend trying both on if you can, as quite often that'll be the deciding factor. Kind regards, Harry.
@@trekitt thanks. Hard to try them on because i don't find any shop nearby that has eather one of them. Is this mammut the best option on the market or do you know even better ones?
@@wouterrombouts9347 Unfortunately there isn't necessarily a best, it's largely based on personal preference. For example, I get along really well with Osprey's Stratos as the backsystem fits me well and will accommodate my camera gear as well, however others here at Trekitt would prefer something like Lowe Alpine's Aeon which is lighter and more packable as they may use it for a little running on the weekends. The Ducan Spine is a fantastic all-rounder and I've enjoyed using it, so if it fits your criteria then go for it! Harry.
