The legendary Prism jacket has been around for a while now and has firmly cemented itself within just about every outdoor enthusiast's kit cupboard. It's difficult to pinpoint why, but it's one of those jackets which you'll reach for time and time again, no matter what the weather is doing. This latest incarnation includes a design update, a far better fit and a host of other technical refinements.

Great review. This jacket has been on my radar for some time. I bought the Icarus jacket last year. That’s a great jacket but I am really getting into this type of jacket. In old money you would wear a Polartec 200 fleece but then the wind goes through it. Bring on the soft shell but these are heavy and rigid and cold. I still love them but they are not as versatile as I would wish. I still have four or five of them so they still have a place. However, this new style of jacket is a soft shell and fleece and as such they are highly versatile. To date I have a Rab jacket that has Polartec Alpha insulated jacket. I also have a Rab Flex jacket. I now have an ME switch jacket and will shortly add the Arcteryx Atom LT and these are now my go to as an insulated soft shell which can be used for all sorts of activities. I am glad to hear about the fit of the Prism because I to have had issues with Montane’a fit in the past being ‘normal’ rather than ‘ripped athlete. Loving this colour mix.

You'v convinced me. I want to order one and have it shipped here in the states, it's just the size I am struggling with. I have a single shot at this, as I am not planning on mailing a package back to the UK/Europe for a return! I like clothes that fit VERY form-fitting. I'm a thin guy, 31" waist, 5'10", 36" chest, so am usually Small in all these outer layers, but when I cross my arms in front of me the jacket always pulls at my armpits. I am worried a small would possibly be too small in that area, and a medium would feel like I am swimming in the jacket. More reviews and research needed, but I really like the features of the jacket, and thing the style / color combos are super nice.
@trekitt
@trekitt 2 года назад
Our sizing chart says you'd be a small, but I think you'd be somewhere between a small and a medium. Definitely worth getting a bit of feedback from those who have used it that may be roughly the same size as you. Harry

Good warmth, packability, features and low weight but I do not agree the Prism has good breathability compared to other jackets. This is an issue for me some of the time, depending on the season. It is good for winter but for the milder/warmer half of the year, try walking uphill in a hurry and the liner sweats up quickly. Like most Prism owners I put up with this annoyance because otherwise it is a good compromise. Frustratingly, Montane have not improved this aspect in the latest versions. So for those milder months I use it at camp for evenings, but there are better items to take out on a hike.
@rylh87
@rylh87 6 месяцев назад
I don’t think you’ve got your clothing choices right. Even the most breathable insulated jacket would soon start to feel hot and sweaty if worn while steaming uphill in mild/warm weather. This jacket clearly wasn’t designed for that.
@indigofruit59
@indigofruit59 6 месяцев назад
@@rylh87 In my experience what you call "clothing choices" are more like a constant experiment and the weather in Britain offers unexpected challenges any time of year, including cold early mornings in July. My Montane Halogen jacket has much greater latitude as far as breathability is concerned, but the Prism is better in other ways.

@trekitt
@trekitt 3 года назад
It depends on how fast you're moving, the amount of altitude on your walk, how warm you are as a person, the thickness/warmth of your baselayer and fleece; even what you've had for breakfast. It's unfortunately one of those things that you need to physically go out and try to know what works for you. We do have a good video on layering clothing that may be useful, though. just for UK fell walking what do you think guys about Fjällräven Keb Jacket vs Montane Prism?
@trekitt
@trekitt 3 года назад
They're very different jackets. The Prism is an insulated jacket and provides a good amount of warmth, whereas the Keb is completely uninsulated and provides virtually no warmth. Its job is to provide durable protection over the top of an insulated layer(s). I've used and owned both and use them in different circumstances, so they can't really be compared I'm afraid. Harry

How does it compare to some of the options from Arcteryx, like the Proton LT and Atom LT? I am looking for a very warm midlayer - something I could wear under a light softshell or under a down jacket in very cold temperatures.
@trekitt

As a midlayer, the Proton is a better option as it's more breathable. Montane also produce the Fireball that would be more suitable. Harry Fireball link: www.trekitt.co.uk/clothing/jackets/montane-mens-fireball-jacket-black__43582
