@@WeeLin Just for once I've seen something brilliant that you haven't. You have to watch "Don't Look Now", completely up your street, and I was immediately reminded of it at the first hint of a half-hidden red-robed figure. I was really into watching all of Nicolas Roeg's films back in my student days, but in retrospect, maybe only that one and "Walkabout" are actually worth watching. Well, I suppose "The Witches" was a fun late addition, but somehow not really his natural style.

I really liked it as a ghost story and it's actually reignited an old love I have for them (reading and writing) since I watched the episode :) I just wish the director had held back a bit with the flashbacks at the end, it lacked the subtlety of the script and performances. I know many other fans are like me and love to savour all the little details and let the episode take up space in our heads for a while after it ends- I felt a bit robbed of that in this case, I think. However that long drawn out death scene was something else! It was so brutal that I remember hoping no one who's had a loved one die by hanging was watching. I think it's definitely set the tone for series 8 and I am so looking forward to it!
@faithpearlgenied-a5517

What with Simon Callow having appeared in not one but two adaptations of A Christmas Carol, as well as playing Charles Dickens himself in no less than 3 different productions (one of which was a Doctor Who episode written by Mark Gatiss), I was genuinely expecting this episode to be a modern retelling of Dickens’ iconic Christmas tale. Just before watching the episode, I was thinking about what lines would need to be changed to suit a 21st century setting and it occurred to me that they could have Steve’s character say “ Are there no prisons? Are there no Restart courses?” As it turned out, I inadvertently predicted that one of Steve’s earlier characters would be referenced, since this is now the second time that he’s been hung (sorry, hanged.) As a massive Whovian, I also couldn’t help noticing that with Simon Callow’s aforementioned role as Charles Dickens in “The Unquiet Dead”, Shobna Gulati’s role as Yaz’s mum from “Arachnids In The UK”, and the No.9 boys roles as Strackman Lux from “Silence In The Library” and Rasmussen from “Sleep No More”, this is the first No.9 episode where the entire cast has also appeared in Doctor Who, as well as being the third in which the entire guest cast shares an acting credit with either Steve or Reece, after “Riddle Of The Sphinx” and “Bernie Clifton’s Dressing Room

I thought this episode was a welcome surprise for us inside no 9 fans and the episode didn't disappoint. I like hearing the telling of stories in film and tv and both Pemberton and Callows performances added so much atmosphere and dimensions Also Posy and Pierce were fantastic it was hard to find them annoying because of the secret tragedy of losing a child. The whole thing felt like a homage to Don't look now and I look forward to posting my own review soon happy new year all

Something that my doctor who fan brain found kinda funny is that Simon Callow once played Charles Dickens in an episode, where he faces off against ghosts 😂 coincidence… I THINK probably. Anyway, I adored this episode with a wonderfully creepy atmosphere. Also want to wish you a happy new year, all the best :)
@stephenhillier3522
@stephenhillier3522 Год назад
No coincidence I think, Simon Callow was perfect for this, particularly for his association with Charles Dickens. He didn't just play him in Doctor Who, he has a long association with Charles Dicken's works, reading, reviewing and often performing his works in character as Charles Dickens. His line "God bless bless us everyone" is absolutely a Dickens reference.

I thought this was a strong episode. It had that beautiful ‘And here’s the reveal’ few seconds of flashbacks that IN9 does do well (brilliantly demonstrated in Misdirection). The scene with the couple softly talking in the pews really added to the emotion of the story. It added a human story to what could have been a throwaway comedy couple.
@WeeLin
@WeeLin Год назад
I hadn't thought of Misdirection, which is weird because that was a favourite of mine. Yes, I loved the emotional moment between Pierce and Posy alone in the pews - it's great when No 9 adds depth to characters when other writers might not have bothered. That's one of the many reasons why the show is so great in my opinion.
@Neil_TheShiningMile
@Neil_TheShiningMile Год назад
@@WeeLin I totally agree. It’s impressive in itself that they’re able to roll out such tight storytelling, carving brilliant tales, but to be able to fit in emotive pieces like that, all of which drive the plot, is testament to their genius. The pickled children story is a real old St Nicholas story. Of course it took place in Anatolia (Turkey) rather than the Home Counties. I suspect that Dick's story is meant to suggest that St Nick was using the Doctor to recover his missing jaw.

Absolutely loved this episode, but not the ending. The end of the story itself was fine but I hate how the show doesn't trust the audience to "get it" and shows us all the flashbacks etc and spells it out. It's not the first time they have done this and it's a bit much.
@WeeLin

I agree, I would have preferred it without the flashbacks and voiceovers - I can't help but wonder if that was a suggestion from the Beeb rather than Steve and Reece's idea. I love how for a supernatural horror narrative, the premonitions don’t feel actively malicious in nature. Rather we see how the vagueness that comes from this is what likely causes tragedy. In the bad doctor’s case, his single minded greed blinded what was in all likelihood meant to be a Christmas Miracle.

Good for you taking on a rescue dog - I've had 2 dogs in the past, both from the Dogs Trust. Btw, another random comment, it made me laugh a bit that the subtitles interpreted hogmanay as 'hug money'. I guess it doesn't understand Scots! lol. It was a good episode of IN9 though. It was yet another (most are) episode where I had to rewind and re-watch it after I first saw it, when broadcast live. I struggle to recognise the clues about what'll happen in the end, while watching it for the first time but I agree it was certainly atmospheric. I also heard the hare was in the phone booth room but I didn't spot it myself, I just read that elsewhere. I think you've already been told that though

I thought this episode was really interesting!! Definitely not the direction I thought it was going in though... I honestly thought Steve's character was going to resurrect his dead mother buried in the graveyard 😅 • I thought the initial comment about the wife was a lie and that his mother was truly buried there. • He didn't care that Dick charged him the two-person rate --- maybe because he'd be leaving with a 2nd person in the morning! • The St. Nick story with bringing people back from the dead. • I think Dick also says, in his ghost story, that there were dark footprints, I thought that could be from someone who had just been dug up from the graveyard because of all the fresh, dark dirt!
