Growing up nearby (in the 70s and 80s), when we’d drive by the Forest Park Clubhouse, we called it “Farrah’s House”, because, to us, it was a mansion, and only a Hollywood celebrity like Farrah Fawcett could afford to live there. Sensational work as always, Tom!
I saw Hendrix and the Rascals in Central Park in 1967. Two awesome concerts in one. Love your videos - thanks. Also, the Stones at Forest Hills in '64.
It's a cool neighborhood. Helen Keller lived in Forest Hills from 1917-1938. The Beatles also had a concert in Forest Hills Stadium and Spider-Man is from Forest Hills (at least in the comics). Also, the Ramones were from Forest Hills.
Forest Hills is beautiful. Even though I'm from Manhattan I briefly lived in Forest Hills because it was so awesome and a great escape from Manhattan for awhile.
I did a walk through Forest Park Gardens to Kew Gardens on my last visit to NYC, coming from the Continental Ave subway stop. I also walked through Forest Park along the horse riding trail and the Interboro/Jackie Robinson Pkwy. I grew up near where the park borders Myrtle Ave in Glendale. We used to call the golf course clubhouse “The Three Bears’ House”. Thanks, Tom, for keeping the memories fresh for those of us who are on the other side of the continent and cant get there regularly…
In the 1970s my first apartment was on Metropolitan Avenue and Forest Park. It was a lovely neighborhood; very quiet with great little restaurants and diners. Then I moved to a huge studio with an eat-in kitchen in Forest Hills and Continental Avenue. I have fond memories of that area in Queens.
How/Why did you not go through the magnificently unique, exclusive houses/streets/neighborhood section behind the railway station, which in itself is a such a fitting entrance, view, & introduction to said areas, for that’s the draw for neighborhood explorers in the know?…. Not even a mention. That would be like doing a video on Flushing without mentioning or going through the Chinese section.
I was at one of those Monkees concerts where Hendrix was the opening act… July 15, 1967. I didn’t care for him - I was totally there to see the Monkees. But it’s always made a great story to tell that I saw him. Forest Hills is a great neighborhood. I’ve lived nearby most of my life. I always loved to shop in Forest Hills and I enjoyed seeing how the other half lived in Forest Hills Gardens. Thanks for covering the neighborhood in your video.
I grew up in Astoria and Never went to this spot until one day as an adult I did and I was blown away. i was like "what the heck is this"?????????? lol Thank you for the video!
It's a cute place. I like the "row house" better than the new apartments. It's sad to see them being replaced. Your new camera guy has personality too:-)
A friend’s grandfather was president of the West Side Tennis Club and we used to go to the U.S. Opens every year. After the tournament moved to Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing, I did get to see a Leonard Cohen concert there.
You should walk over to Forest Hills South, where I live. 7 buildings between 78th ave and 76th rd. to 113th street. Gorgeous internal garden. North side of the boulevard. The architect was Philip Birnbaum who did many pre and post war buildings around the city. These are prewars completed I 1939...40.
geraldine ferrer who ran for vice president with dukakis was from the houses behind that nice brick area. by the railroad station. there used to be a beefstake charlies there.
I saw Pixies this summer and Duran Duran last summer at forest hills outdoor stadium the old tennis us open stadium .. Great venue for summer concert.. Great job like always Senior
the midway!!!!! used to see the rocky horror picture show. and things like bambi vs godzillia. 71st contenental my stop. omg my bus stop at the ridgewood.. when i go to hell and i will it will be on the q64 former 65a... where is the line around the block?
I remember 2004 in Forest Hills Park when a tiger escaped from the circus at the time and it roamed the park, what a headline..., also Mr Tom, you missed that nice Cathedral on Queens Blvd, make a part 2 please!
Razing the historic row houses for those rectangular modern monstrosities is a crying shame. I found it on Street View and tried to imagine what the block must have looked like 100 years ago. Edit 1: Did you mention the Ramones and I just missed it? Famously from Forest Hills. Edit 2: It breaks my heart that you haven't been to a concert in years. I hope you're just joking. Live Nation/Ticketmaster's monopoly on venues and tickets can go f itself, but live music is my favorite thing in the world. NOFX just played the Brooklyn Paramount and it looked so beautiful!
I saw my second concert ever at the Forest Hills tennis stadium, Eurhythmics & Howard Jones in 1984. Awesome venue, I think it got a makeover recently because it looked totally different in 2018 when I sae alt-j there.
I wish they would rehab that remaining row house instead of tearing it down to make way for the ugly new that's next door. I know, the property can house many more people as an apartment bldg but we are quickly losing all that fabulous old architecture that we'll never see again. I love your video's, Tom. Keep up the great work!!
You showed the Ramones mural twice but failed to mention they were FH boys too, all went to FH HS! Connors, Borg,Mcenroe, Billy Jean at the US Open too. Spiderman - Peter Parker the Beatles and the stones both played there in the 60's too.
As a fellow history nerd, love all your videos! Another not so fun fact about Forest hills station square I learned recently, it's where Son of Sam killed two of his victims
In the early 2k I was perusing the forest hills streets being annoyed at all the «private streets» signs. Fast forward, I left NYC, fast even more forward I come back. All I'm saying is that I understand the forest hillbillies and their private streets.
I love forest hills My uncle lived there may he rest in peace. A lot of childhood memories I spent there the best neighborhood in Queens in my opinion sorry Astoria midway theater is also where I saw a the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie back in 1990.😂 i
oh boy... mostly accurate, but too much onscreen explanation, you should be showing the topic matter instead of YOU speaking... yeah you're animated with the bulging eyes and expressions...fun, but lets stay on topic with the VIDEO. and LOTS of commentary that could be bolstered better.... im not hating, not complaining, im giving you Show Notes. Overall good job, i grew up there so i know better, but it was nice to see some of my old homestead
Talks about how interesting FH is and shoots the video in the least interesting areas. Not impressed and all that hand and arm gesturing is irritating.
Can’t believe he didn’t take that camera really into The Gardens to show you all those beautiful homes. They literally were a block from where he was standing. He has a lot of great information but the delivery is a bit manic. Guess that’s his style and I appreciate him.
Your boring. A great story, a beautiful location...you just failed to do it justice. That being said, I look forward to your upcoming, and improved videos.
