Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) is a happy, hockey-loving 11-year-old Midwestern girl, but her world turns upside-down when she and her parents move to San Francisco. Riley's emotions -- led by Joy (Amy Poehler) -- try to guide her through this difficult, life-changing event. However, the stress of the move brings Sadness (Phyllis Smith) to the forefront. When Joy and Sadness are inadvertently swept into the far reaches of Riley's mind, the only emotions left in Headquarters are Anger, Fear and Disgust.

Lol Sadness wasn't the one who caused the problem. If you think about it, one of the most tragic lines of the movie is "I know you don't want me to, but I miss home". Riley's parents accidentally raised her to always be "their happy girl", but you can't always be happy. You need sadness to process the bad stuff that happens to you. The fact that Riley felt like she wasn't allowed to be sad is honestly heartbreaking.

Right! When people refer to toxic happiness, they don't think about where it comes from or how it (or any other feeling/consept) is passed down if not proper delt with. This mother typed her daughter as her happy girl, making Riley feel obligated to always stay happy (also subconsiously). She's also making her daughter their support system by doing so. For some parents it's too easy to see their children in surton roles. Likewise, it's just as easy for children to take the roles they're given. Took me 30 years to realise that.

@Br0nto5aurus
@Br0nto5aurus Год назад
I think people forget that the emotion characters have to be as one-dimensional as they are by definition. Everything going on in her head is a representation of Riley processing this massive change in her life. Nothing is Sadness or Joy's "fault", Sadness is moved into action by the paradigm shift, and Joy, a representation of "typical Riley", consciously tries to combat that, the same way people try to talk themselves down when they're upset. The characters are merely representations of different inner voices we all have, which are deeply affected by the environment where we grow up. I like that this movie provides a framework for people to talk to young children about mental illness at an age appropriate level.

This movie is INCREDIBLE with color theory. Riley: striped shirt as they're moving with all colors on them to show theyre in harmony, or so it seems. yellow jacket on the first day of school because she's still young enough to be excited. Striped shirt sans blue and yellow at the dinner table because all of her emotions are fighting for control with joy and sadness gone. Black jacket because she's emotionally shutting down. Emotions: joy has blue hair, backing up the theory joy and sadness go hand in hand. Disgust has a purple ascot, suggesting disgust is mainly motivated by what scares us. Anger is wearing a red tie showing how when were angry, we can't see, hear, or feel anything else. Think, "seeing red". And finally Sadness is wearing a white turtleneck as a combination of all the emotions, like how all light is combined to make white light.

I saw an interesting theory about that. Coming from the fact that Sadness was "controlling" the mom in her mind, and that Anger was "controlling" the dad in his mind. That in the end, these five guys are "the main" emotions from which end up deriving a lot of more complex emotions and concepts. Riley's dad isn't angry all the time, but he's driven, determined, ambituous (they move in the city for his career and all), he likes competition, sports, so he's a very "on top of things" dad. And then there's the mother, who is kind, caring, soft, empathetic, very realistic. Compared to Riley, who is literally "a bundle of Joy", smiley, energetic, simple, honest, tender. So that at the end of the day, not only do the five emotions find some kind of balance and way of working together, but that they'd also evolve with each others and mean more than their "original" goal which are Anger, Fear, Disgust, Sadness and Joy. So all in all, I guess it could mean that making a ton of different characters would be irrelevant. Irritation could relate to Anger, Pride and Envy to disgust, Gloom and Despair to Sadness, etc etc.

It was actually Joy who annoyed me as hell, not paying attention to what is right under her nose, pushing reality aside... just like so many people when you have problems. I think that I can defend Tim's dislike of Sadness. We should probably remember that this is the representation of the sadness of a pre-teen girl. Children generally have more intense emotions than adults, so they react more intensely to things that adults wouldn't think much about, which I think is why Sadness might appear much more impulsive and reactive than we would like. Contrast this with Riley's mother, whose main emotion is also Sadness, but whose version of Sadness is much more in control and restrained.

@ForsakenMemories45
@ForsakenMemories45 Год назад
@@meghanmonroe You are mixing in modern society's hot takes on stuff, although I suppose that isn't really a modern society thing anymore. No, it is just simply suggesting that perhaps Riley feels more masculine when expressing her anger and fear due to how she feels when evoking those emotions. If I understand correctly, Joy came first with Sadness right behind, but Fear, Disgust and Anger showed up as she was growing up. Now of course emotions are a natural thing, but maybe she took the fear of being careful after her dad. We clearly don't know for sure, but I will say that fear and anger as emotions tend to follow suit in cycles AND anger makes her more aggressive with is a trait in men to be more aggressive generally speaking. However, the Director Pete Docter said that they did it for maximum diversity as we mostly focus on Riley's emotions and only briefly on everyone else's, and thus that gives an inherent base-line relatability. Though the movie and the short suggest that same kids do or don't have emotions of all the same gender, but all adults seem to, which I think plays less into any societal thing and way more into what we both seem to agree on which is puberty and future development of self.

I can see how a lot of people tear up when Bing Bong is saying "Take her to the moon for me" because it's well done--a great sad moment that adds a layer of context to such a fun and unassuming concept mentioned earlier on in the movie. The idea of taking Riley to the moon first said in joy is now masked in a layer of sadness just like how sadness's touch turned the happy core memories into sad ones. It's a clean parallel that the audience is unknowingly taking part in. That said, the scene that makes _me_ cry every time without fail is when Riley's parents are holding her at the end, and Riley breathes of a sigh of relief after she cries. If I think about it too long, the tears just flow, and I'm not really sure why.

As someone else already commented you guys have such great chemistry. The fact you have been friends this long really resonates in the video!

This movie is such a complex example of what it feels like to have depression. It explains almost everything that happens, the start off with not feeling some emotions, to not feeling any, outbursts and distancing, even huge amounts of memory loss. I’m currently going through my second depressive episode. My first since I was a young teen, actually. And watching this brings everything to mind, but it also helps me realize that everything will get better. This movie honestly really helped me get out of it the first time, and I’m hoping that it’ll help me now

It's really interesting how many reactors I've seen get mad at sadness. I think it speaks to how we see actual sadness in society. When I watched it the first time, I remember thinking, "well, sadness is an emotion that people feel, and it's unfair to suppress her". I was always rooting for her.

Something I don't think is pointed out enough is that Bing Bong had CRAZY character development for a supporting role, something I think a lot of kids films (and beyond that scope as well) can learn from. Bing Bong starts essentially stealing happy memories to 'relive the glory days' as Riley likely hasn't played with him in a long time due to growing up, and the entire time he is motived by the promise of Joy to have Riley remember him, which is an entirely selfish goal. This goal is so important that it causes him to invade the dream sequence at the cost of making things worse before ultimately being the reason why Riley wakes up in fear from having an extremely traumatic moment for her invading her dreams. It isn't until they end up in the Memory Dump that both Joy and Bing Bong have their defining character growth moments: Joy realizes that Sadness has her moments that are required for Riley to function properly, and Bing Bong realizes that he can't avoid being forgotten with the massive number of things that replace other things in a person's life...and instead of sandbagging and refusing to accept his fate, he instead makes peace with the fact that Joy can save Riley. In essence, his line about taking her to the moon for him is him sacrificing himself with the notion that she will be able to be just as happy or more about other things in her life in the future, even if he is forgotten, and that just that notion is enough for him to willingly be forgotten possibly forever. That is character development and a heroic move if I've ever seen one! Also, the movie basically hands this out for free by the end with Riley's own words stating that she felt like she HAD to be happy for her family, but most people watching the film see Sadness and say 'Hey, she's ruining everything!' but a keen eye will see that it's actually Joy's actions that are causing all the issues. It's normal to be sad about moving away from what you know and having to build up something new, especially at a young age where a lot of things are out of your control, but Joy REFUSES to let Sadness do her job to let Riley reflect on once happy memories now in a sad light. This and the fact that Joy spends a lot of time early in the film trying to overcompensate (as well as how generally negative Joy is to specifically Sadness) are early signs of Riley feeling like she HAS to be happy, but by needing to be sad and forcing herself to be happy, she loses the ability to be either for a while and then everything REALLY starts to fall apart.

This is such a great movie! Almost every viewer sides with Joy at first and think Sadness is annoying. Nobody wants to be sad. But then we all come to realize just how important sadness is in our lives by the end. We need to have the bad times in order to truly enjoy the good ones. It helps with compassion and empathy as well. They did such an amazing job with everything when making this movie.

3:51 Mental illness club, in the house 🙋🏻‍♀️😓 If I didn't take meds I would, in fact, be sad all the time. So it's not too hard to imagine for me. Also, this movie has been very helpful to me. It gave me new ways to describe what's going on in my head when I'm in therapy. I've explained to more than one therapist that since my mom died, most of my "yellow" memories have changed to blue. January will be 7 years and many of those memories have adjusted to a more balanced yellow/blue compromise which feels more permanent and, honestly, more sustainable. I'll never not be sad about losing her, and that sadness will never not color the rest of my life and memories, but it doesn't have to be the only feeling. Especially as time goes by. I wish everything was that simple...but at least that's something.

Tim, Sorry for another comment but there’s an Easter egg you should really know. When Joy was acting like Sadness when she’s trying to look for her, you can see lots of memories that are very similar to the movie Up. The memories were Carl and Ellie at their wedding, their house, old Ellie kissing old Carl, and when we see Carl getting old.
