INSIDE OUT MOVIE REACTION | First Time Watching | Movie Review 

This movie does an amazing job of expressing how depression works; it's not a sadness, it's a numbness.

Bing Bong's death wasn't just heartbreaking, it was a representation of a sad reality that when we grow up we must let go of our childhood.

This to me, is one of the most well written Pixar Movies ever. Not only is it relatable, it speaks to us deeply.

Sadness was actually doing nothing wrong, but Joys toxic positivity is very annoying to me. Also, the parents should never have asked Riley to keep the happiness up just for their sake... That's not fair at all. Everyone would feel confused, sad, scared if they have to move to a strange new place, they could have talked about that with Riley much sooner and share their emotions. It was okay to feel sad, but just like Joy, the parents also expected the little girl to be easygoing and happy. Sadness is not a negative emotion in itself, many of us have it as the leading emotion.

That little sigh Riley gives out, after that good, long cry in her parents' arms... Gets me going everytime!

I love how they showed that even “negative” emotions like Sadness are needed in order to have a healthy mind. The only thing that makes such emotions negative are how much you have and how you manage them.

I think Joy is more illuminated compared to the other emotions because Riley has always been called like the happy kid -- even her parents call her so. But that's just my theory

"What happens to the ones that fall off the shelves?" I guess it causes that effect when you can't remember something you should know. I'm pretty sure ADHD is just that place without any shelves at all.

I totally had an imaginary friend. his name was Obie and he was a black cat haha. Bing Bong's sacrifice scene always gets me, even through reaction videos. I just bawled along with you, dude. as for Sadness, what I got from it was that she was compelled to touch all the memories because Riley was purposely holding back her feelings of sadness to please her parents when she really needed to be allowing herself to feel it to truly process the move. Joy was forcing Riley to be happy all the time because mom requested a smile and a "happy girl" to help dad feel better, even though that's not really how Riley was feeling. but kudos to you for not immediately shitting on Sadness and understanding that she too has a purpose, even if we didn't quite understand it yet ❤

Pixar had two leading psychologists who specialize on emotions consulting for this film, and it shows. I saw someone mention they're using clips from this film in their psychology course. What a remarkable achievement. Not only making a good film, but also making one that's a contribution to education.

This is genuinely one of my favourite Pixar movies, cried like a baby near the end when I first watched it. I don't usually do that lol. Very glad it's getting a sequel.

Her moms primary is sadness, but since shes grown up, it has evolved into empathy, while the fathers anger who is in charge has evolved into determination.

We very recently had a death in the very near family, and my 12 year old son had a hard time coming to terms with his memories about his grandfather. He didn't want to think about the happy thoughts, because he would get sad afterwards. I used this movie to tell him that it was OK to feel that way, and that you don't minimise the loss by remembering the happy thoughts. That helped him a lot.

Inside Out is so amazing, Pixar knows how to make people feel about loving you`re family and remembering you`re childhoods

fun fact: in some Asian countries they said they changes the broccoli in the feeding scene to green peppers to fit into the culture better

Probably the best Pixar film. Love how they represented all the themes of simple and complex emotion. And then depression being the absence of emotion. And just overall, they really did their research. I had an imaginary pet dragon when I realised I never had a proper imaginary friend. So I made that one up :3 Hope you'll eventually watch Ratatouille if you haven't seen it yet :)

Those are real tears you hear in Bing Bong's voice as he says "Take her to the moon for me". Richard Kind was overcome with emotion during recording Bing Bong's voice and they kept it in.

Great movie! I turned it on randomly one day for my 4yo not knowing anything about it. I was 6mo pregnant and we were getting ready to move 4K miles away. I ugly cried like never before 😭😭😭 You’d have thought they were murdering puppies or something.

There is a short of Inside Out on D+, "Riley's First Date". You should watch that, it is great!

Great reaction! I love this movie so much. I feel like the reason why Sadness starts getting “out of control” and touching the memories is because Joy has tried to repress that emotion in Riley for so long. Sadness starts touching things and making them sad without meaning to because internally she knows that Riley needs to feel sad at this time, but she has been told from the first moment that she isn’t needed and actually hurts more than helps. So now she doesn’t seem to be able to help it.

Man, this came out right after I moved a couple of states away from my friends and family and it hit super hard.

Oh man, this movie! I was going through a really hard time when I watched this in theaters and I was a wreck by the end. But it was in a good, healing way. Pixar never fails to make me cry my heart out and feel hopeful at the same time and Inside Out is a cut above the rest, IMO. ♥ I didn't have an imaginary friend exactly, but I had TONS of imaginary pets, including a cage full of baby bats that I would "hand out" at recess for the other kids to play with. 🤣

The GIRL alarm also works in the reverse.. I have memories of doing the same thing with guys..

Sadness was out of control wanting to touch everything because Riley had a lot of reason to be sad. But joy was constantly trying to suppress her. you can't suppress sadness. It's nearly always a disaster. it needs to be felt and processed so you can heal. Joy was even repressing the bad dreams. Dreams are a way for us to process everything that's happened to us. Even the bad ones are necessary. I always wanted to give Joy a shake and tell her "it's not all about you!" yea, i had an imaginary friend. I learned as an adult not everyone does, but a lot also do. We moved A LOT when i was a kid and nearly always to a different state for my dad's job. My imaginary friend was a black unicorn who couldn't touch man made things, so he ran in the grass beside the rode on all of our long trips for moving and made giant leaps over roads and stuff, nearly flying. He was my only friend and i told him everything that was horrible about being alive and living with the monsters who were my parents. Oddly enough, i think that big black beast kept me sane. I still miss him sometimes. :)

That's my favorite animation! Bing Bong's death always makes me cry a lot, because I had an imaginary friend called Joe, he was a very small gnome who lived in the walls of my house (like Jerry). He was very real to me, but over time I forgot about him and never saw him again. I only remembered him when I watched the movie Bogus, which shows that imaginary friends exist to fill gaps in children's lives, and that it's natural to be forgotten when they are no longer needed. As a kid I had a lot of imaginary friends, I distinctly remember them all, but the “forgetting” of Bing-Bong still hits hard with me. This whole movie does, as I often dealt with and continue to deal with the inside of my head far more than outside. That’s a longer discussion; however I’ll sum it up by relaying a quote from the original Wonder Years that reminds me of how this movie hits me and why it does, the older Kevin as narrator of the show says the following in an episode called CODA, “When you're a little kid, you're a little bit of everything: Artist, Scientist, Athlete, Scholar. Sometimes it seems like growing up is a process of giving those things up, one by one. I guess we all have one thing we regret giving up; one thing we really miss - that we gave up because we were too lazy, or because we couldn't stick it out, or because we were afraid…” For Riley what she gave up this movie shows metaphorically how part of her is forgotten to preserve her joy in life… we all have those things in life we give up, and sometimes we forget what things drive us to do things, for her it was an imaginary friend that had a shared dream of going to the moon. I can imagine them showing her in the future talking about reaching that goal, but fumbling over the exact definitive reasons why she has this drive to reach this goal, it’s just one of those childhood dreams that move us for ward into adulthood, and though she may have forgotten the friend in her head behind it, that drive carries her onward.

Besides the upcoming Sequel which comes out on June 14, 2024, there is also a short called "Riley's First Date?" which came out in 2015(same as the movie.)

I still remember seeing this movie in theaters it truly is a great movie and creative way to display a movie about life, emotions, and childhood to adolescence. I recommend if you haven’t watched but to watch Big Hero 6 and The Odd Life of Timothy Green

I really like the way they represent memories in the film. Makes a lot of sense.

The dinner table scene is so relatable. I remember being that age and feeling overwhelmed with intense emotions I didn't know how to control, and I wasn't developmentally able (and/or hadn't been given the tools) to calmly say to my parents or teachers "I don't want to be rude, but my emotions are not under control, so please stop talking to me".

The idea and story for this movie came from the directors I think it was their daughter who was 14-16 at the time and said to their dad I have an idea for a movie …. and here it is

They did such a good job with this movie. It puts the more complex emotional issues into a form that is, more, understandable for children...and for adults for that matter. I think the Train of Thought being derailed and destroyed was supposed to indicate how difficult it is to think straight when you are experiencing trauma. You are more reacting instinctually, instead of thoughtfully.

This movie is great but man does it make me cry like most Pixar & Disney movies lol!! They are making a second one base on Riley’s teen years. Love the tee & great reaction x

The use of colours in this film is so incredibly important and can be so subtle that some visual references can be easily missed. If you notice closely, the colours of some emotions are interconnected visually. Disgust has a purple neck ribbon, indicating that disgust and fear have a collation to each other in some way - some of our fears can be shown through disgust. Fear has a red boe-tie, indicating a subte connection between anger and fear. The biggest and most important message in the visual design of Joy is the fact her hair and eyes is blue, indicating that there is a part of happiness has a connection with sadness. In the case of film, for Riley to grow as a person, she (through Joy) needed to experience the fact that even her happiest memories can become the saddest she feels. Something that Joy doesn't understand until it happens is that whilst a happy memory can be joyful at the time, something in the future can cause these memories to become upsetting, which the film uses brilliantly in the example of moving across the country and Riley having to leave her Minnesota life behind her. I just bloody love this film so much, even after 7 years since release!

Casting Lewis Black as Anger was genius.

I started tearing up like 6 minutes into the reaction because I started *thinking* about the Bing Bong part that was coming up later.

this has been one of my movies that i've never rewatched bc of how badly i cried during my first watch but made a exception to watch a long with you and cried almost just as hard as the first time. such a good movie that shows depression in a creative and tangible way for ppl to understand. love it so much

I love how well thought out the world mechanics of the mind are. The bit at the very end with Riley bumping into the nerdy kid - "GIRL! GIRL! GIRL! GIRL!" - had me cracking up, as well as the inside of the cat's mind *with NOBODY* at the controls, or the bus driver with *ALL* Anger avatars...

OMG! I don't know if I've ever heard you laugh so much or so hard during a reaction. It was great!

Omni!!! You should check out the Prince of Egypt!!!! It's one of those classics that I feel are very underrated, but has some really amazing visuals!!! Both it and the Lion King are the main reasons why I kinda prefer 2D more than 3D.

I googled why was Joy luminescent and this is the theory I found: Joy glows the most because she's got the most energy. I’ve been going over my core memories lately thinking about my childhood and this movie reaction is very timely and appropriate for this time of the year.

You said you never had an imaginary friend, but what if you did and forgot it? like BingBong was forgotten. That's what makes me sad in that part is thinking about all the things growing up that I don't remember now.

Bing Bong’s death will always hurt.

The reason why Joy for Riley glows is because of the saying, “He/She was practically glowing.” Whenever someone is really excited or happy, they’re said to glow. Or that their happiness “shines through.” And those who are always happy are said to be “bright and cheerful.” Also, Riley’s Joy isn’t actually the only Joy to glow. Her glow is just more pronounced. If you look closely, you can see that her dad’s Joy also has that sort of blue glow to him, but it’s very small and almost easy to miss. And the Joy for the girl at the pizza register also glows a bit. However, the clown’s Joy no longer glows because he’s “lost his light”. Especially when the Joy says, “Six years of drama school for this.” Other characters whose Joy doesn’t glow can also be seen as having lost their light or just not expressing Joy all that often if ever. For instance, the classmate who wears eyeshadow seemed really plagued with anxiety and possibly self-loathing, so there’s not really a reason for her to glow. You don’t really hear animals called as “glowing” when they’re happy, either, so their Joys don’t glow. The bus driver doesn’t really glow for pretty obvious reasons. Then the nerdy kid that bumps into Riley also seems really shy, so his joy doesn’t shine through as much. But there’s still a glow that you can see at his feet when he touches the floor, it’s just SUPER hard to tell. And as you know, the mom’s head is run by Sadness, which could also be interpreted to be empathy. She seems to put everyone else’s needs first and also uses escapism often, which could mean that her light doesn’t get to shine through, either.

You should check out the short, "Riley's First Date?" It focuses more on the parents' emotions when that boy she met at the hockey rink stops by their house... 😄

My family moved from Orlando, Florida to Bainbridge, Georgia when I was around 3 years old; then we moved to Dothan, Alabama when I was 6 years old.

I don’t think Sadness was necessarily being nefarious. I think her tainting memories was a way of showcasing how depression can play tricks on you and can make you misremember the true emotions of a memory. Loved this reaction, especially when some of the humor would catch you off guard!

The way that we as adults see this movie in contrast as kids is amazing. Usually we understand that it's ok to don't be happy all the time and that we have to feel sadness or angry, shows more understanding about emotions and life.

Bingbong's death is so sad, because it symbolises the end of childhood and innocence, the moment where this carefree world of ours, of imaginary friends and simpler times come to an end.

I think the reason joy is glowing is because Riley is putting most her energy into BEING happy. But that’s just an opinion.

The second one is said to be released not too far from this time next year. Not sure if the date is confirmed yet

She glows because she's Joy. She's the only emotion that is considered positive. The other emotions, sadness, fear, disgust and anger are considered negative, but necessary emotions. Joy is the only emotion that does not have a shadow.

I had an imaginary friend, but she wasn't some fantastical creature or anything. Just a girl that I talked to. (It occurs to me now that being an adult and describing an imaginary friend sounds a lot like insanity 😂 ) My mom told me years later that I'd apparently modeled her after my first swimming instructor, who I had a crush on as a toddler. I don't remember the teacher, but I do remember the imaginary friend, so... I don't know what that says about me 😂
