When I started sharing my artwork online, I had to learn this whole new concept colour calibration and reproduction. Basically, you need to calibrate scanners, monitors and printers to match how human eyes see the reproduction of an original artwork on matte paper, glossy paper, polyester shirt, cotton tshirt, website etc. Very fascinating topic and I totally get what Pantone is trying to sell.
@RG_Eph
@RG_Eph 3 месяца назад
How do you do this when using procreate on IPad and printing with a local printer?
@_helmi
@_helmi 3 месяца назад
@@RG_Eph export procreate projects into PNG/TIFF format. the next step depends on the level of quality that you desire, type of printing media and usage, you need Adobe Lightroom to pretty much assist and simplify your printing workflow. while it is possible to print using your printer's default settings, it is not always accurate (ie. the colour on iPad matches to colour reproduce by your printer). to achieve accuracy, you need to apply the correct colour profile (ICC) that is made for your printer model based on the type of paper you use eg. you want to print on a matte fine art paper, your printer is Epson model xyz, so that's one ICC. some major paper producers do provide downloadable ICCs for various printer models across different type of papers they sell. your printer's manual also offer steps to print using existing softwares bundled. check your manufacturer's support page.

I worked for a packaging company, Multi Packaging Solutions, for over a decade that used Pantone colors regularly based on the requirements of our customers. Every time we had to change over a spot color required by a customer on one of our KBA printing, presses, (much like the ones on the video) it was very time consuming. We instead began blending and mixing colors on press to achieve a very close match. We approached Pantone about integrating it into their standards, and they said no. So we developed our own system called Echo color match and began implementing it at other facilities, and familiarizing our customers with it. By not needing to change colors we saved a great deal of money and pass the savings onto the customers. Pantone realized that this would be a problem for them, and eventually acquiesced and They can now use the Pantone trademark on these mixed colors.

The Pantone Color of the Year: Peach Fuzz, reminds me of the late 1980's. Back in those days, peach, mauve, country blue, tans and browns, were the popular colors. We could buy everything in peach from clothing to bath towels to even peach colored toilet paper (yes, really). Once again, history repeats itself.

5:06 “Your book is exposed to air and it can oxidize and then what you see in your book can visually change when you look at it so then you won’t accurately know if that’s the exact color that you are looking for. So for that reason it is important to keep getting fresh books so that you can view them accurately.” So, basically, the color mavens at Pantone, the company that sells color consistency, after six decades in that business, _can’t_ come up with fairly durable colors for their books that _don’t_ force you to keep getting fresh ones? Or simply don’t want to, because it cuts into their profits. I wonder which one it is.

@@tingobingo1401 Oh, sure. There are plenty of reasons for Pantone _not_ change its model of “planned obsolescence” for its books. And even though there _are_ alternatives to Pantone, it’s probably still dominant enough in the “color” space not to change anything.
@levipark9175

It’s not possible to print on paper and not have it change over time. I work for an ink manufacturer and deal with this problem constantly. Their bigger problem is that you can compare two brand new books side by side and they won’t match each other. It is extremely hard to make a color truly consistent over time. Time degrades all. We started to save wet samples and match them every time someone orders. So we are matching the exact same thing over time. That works much better than a printed sample but it still changes over time and even slightly went you have to save a new sample.
@jeff__w
@jeff__w 5 месяцев назад
@@levipark9175 That's a fair response. My cynicism might be unwarranted. “Their bigger problem is that you can compare two brand new books side by side and they won’t match each other.” If that’s true, then the entire premise of the books is faulty, which makes the system even worse.
@levipark9175
@levipark9175 5 месяцев назад
They make it sound like Pantone book are actually constant. They are FAR from consistent. They can’t even keep a color consistent through a series of books printed at the same time. It’s very well known in any industry that has to actually match these colors and seek the same color to the same customer over years. I work for an ink manufacturer. We make the ink for the large printing presses. We had to come up with our own system of standardizing Pantone colors because every book is different. Customers order a specific color, we would match it to our book, they would complain, we would compare our book to theirs and they would be completely different. We would have to start adding their job name to the color number and make it a custom match and save a standard wet sample that we can match every time they order. If your procedure was to simply match to the book you would have non stop customer complaints. Their book is different than yours. All books change over time, like the lady said. It’s ridiculous. I’m sure it was a major improvement from what was done before Pantone, but it’s far from as good as they made it sound.

Marketing people rely on the PMS book as their go-to starting point. That's why you have to get new PMS books every year. As a print buyer I found you have to satisfy Marketing's expectations and the book is indispensable. I also to give PMS and CMYK specs with print orders with the note ' Print to match current PMS'.

@abrakkehakka1357
@abrakkehakka1357 5 месяцев назад
Well… You pay Adobe to use colors digitally in the first place. You could as well argue that they (and other software developers) controls the colors. Because there’s a lot of calculations going on when you translate a color from e.g. CMYK to RGB. Or when you simply mix colors digitally. Adobe has had a deal with Pantone before to use calculations (software) that translates a color that has a Pantone code to RGB or vice versa. Now you have to pay Pantone directly if you want that function. You can always use a different system. CIE Lab is an absolutely free system since it is produced by an international consortium of scientists. Or the different RGB gamuts are also free. And many CMYK systems are free. You can similarly find swatch systems to buy of those system in “surface color versions”. Although, besides some who offer expensive swatches of CIE Lab colors, they are perhaps not as good as Pantone when it comes to color consistency and color gamut. Pantone also offers calculations that take UV light and fluorescence into account. Also, you can find the RGB or CMYK codes of Pantone colors readily available for free. You just have to type them in manually. Or you can buy a colorimeter and measure a color swatch to get its RGB code. If you believed that you had access to Pantone coding and calculation software for free, then you can as well blame Adobe who didn’t inform you well enough to understand that this license can be revoked and hence it is a risk to use the Pantone system when selecting colors. One can be upset with all companies making too much money. But Pantone sells color consistency. And has always sold it. It has never been for free. There are alternatives who sell color consistency, but they aren’t for free. Adobe is, according to me, not in any way into the color consistency business. Really… I would argue that even Pantone is weak, even if they likely are the best ones. Because colors are way more complicated than one believes.

I was in fact wondering if that story would be touched upon in that video. Whatever the “changes in Pantone’s licensing with Adobe” I would think that very few customers using Adobe products would have any expectation at all that a certain color used in a file would be “removed” and, instead, would expect that any colors used in files created before the change in licensing would remain unchanged.

I hope this gets the right eyeballs... I work in the fashion industry and have been producing garments using Pantones for over two decades. The question that I always wondered was whats the difference between using Pantone #'s and HEX #'s? Aren't they essentially the same?
@RaymondHng
@RaymondHng 3 месяца назад
No. They're not. HEX #s are six hexadecimal digits. The first two hexadecimal digits represent the red value from 0 to 255. The second two represent the green value and the third two represent the blue value. Red, green, and blue are additive colors used in three-color computer monitors and television sets which use the additive color model. They are different from color printers that use the subtractive color model of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. Color light is different from color ink. When you add red, green, and blue light together, you get white light. When you add cyan, magenta, and yellow ink together, you get a near black ink. White on a color monitor would be HEX FFFFFF while white on a color printer would be no ink at all or HEX 00000000. The Pantone Matching System uses a singular number regardless of the medium. So blue on the Swedish flag is Pantone 301C which would be HEX 006AA7 or decimal 0, 106, 167 on a color monitor and would be 100, 37, 0, 35 on a CMYK printer.

Pantone is for making sure that every factory, business use the exact same color the designer asks for. I work in this industry, and I actually hate this tedious process. I am more like an abstract person; this process takes the joy out of the creativity process. There have been meetings, emails going on and on what which Pantone number use, seems pretentious to me to spend hours on a yellow hue of 25 shades to agree upon. Does an individual spend time at the stores matching shoes and jackets? no. But the factories have to produce exactly what the designer want. BTW, be careful wearing Peach Fuzz color if you are light skin person, like Caucasians, Asians, because if you wear a Peach Fuzz legging, tight dress, you will look like you are naked from a distance lol

Your name, your company name, and your company's logo/colors (like mine, which uses 6 different colors), are some of THE MOST IMPORTANT aspects of one's life. Regarding that FUGLY peach color for 2024, I will say this: a few years ago, the color called "millennial pink" shot to the forefront of everything: fashion, home decor, furniture, linens, shoes/boots, paint, office supplies, jewelry, accessories, you name it. Fast forward several years, and this godawful color is still extremely popular everywhere. I _loathe_ this color. And now, Pantone is pushing a similar, but even uglier shade, as its color for 2024. Which means, it'll be around for at least _another_ 10 years, because these things don't just die off when the next Pantone color year rolls around. And Pantone's had some real stinkers over the past recent years.

Consistency - Relatively new?? How about how machine screws etc were standardized around the time of the Colt pistol factory (civil war), then Ford auto manufacturing (early C20).. The entire standards industry is active across literally every sector now!!

they mean in the sense of color schemes not standardization in general.

I can’t get past the pronunciation of Pantone in this video. It’s PAN-tone, not pan-TONE

I wish you could come over to my house and help me with colors for what to put on the wall and maybe even the right curtains. I know it looks good (someone could show me pictures of modern or even Scandinavian IKEA type of... Like those many houses they have in IKEA... Or that magazine dwell... So I would know what stuff to put on the walls and tapestry/ curtains. I'm old now and I just recently had a stroke. I was in the hospital for a month... I'm barely know how to read (and killed that part of my brain) but I know I like modern as well as pastel.. light bright uplifting... The house I live in now unfortunately... Even the cabinetry is so dated but I can't afford a new kitchen. I wish someone could just look over my house and give me ideas so I could at least maybe hire someone not not too expensive that could at least start painting their house. The majority of the house is a ugly tan and I hate tan! But I also suffer from. I'll see you depression and anxiety... And I tried a couple of rooms with a color... I don't know why but one wall I put turquoise thinking it would be nice. But then I found out I really don't even like the color of turquoise. Where is the real? But I do normally like clean, modern as well as bright, hairy and pastel. I did at least do the color of my bedroom green and gray on the other side and that actually turned out pretty good. So I did it in the master. . But I don't want this ugly tan in the living room. And kitchen kitchen?. I don't know. Maybe I should just do a type of white in living room... But the like to entryway? For example I made it a baby blue... And people tell me it literally looks like a room for a baby... It just doesn't go well with that ugly tan in the living room which I painted for years. And with these dated kitchen... I just don't know what color would work with that and then I would really like to have something pastel and extremely bright and airy and cheerful in the dining room (That's the room. I accidentally put one side of the wall turquoise and it just all doesn't work at all) I wish someone could just look at a video and tell me what they think would look good... Then maybe I could hire a cheap painter to paint for me and mostly in the different rooms except for of course the master and my bedroom which is that green and gray which I actually like pretty good.... And then there is two different bathrooms... Maybe something spa-like color in the master bath. And The bathroom that's the main bathroom is actually the smallest... And it's always super dark with no lights... No window.... And I forgot to mention the flooring is awesome dated. But back to what I was saying the flooring in this hole house is ugly but I can't afford the flooring. I just need help with the right colors... That little bathroom that we have here in the house... I so desperately need something bright and cheerful because again not only is it dark, the whole house is dark except for the one master and my bedroom... Maybe if I could just record a video explaining everything and someone could.. Give me an idea of at least what paint... I even thought about scraping down the cabinetry. In. The kitchen but with my medical I can't do that and I don't know how much someone would charge me for that... And I definitely can't afford to do anything with the flooring. I just don't have that kind of money😢
