Curious to watch. I am from Milan, living in NYC for 2 decades. NYC seems to be going down the drain slowly. One step up, 2 back. Anyway, I enjoy your videos, I wonder why you do not shoot in linear mode with your camera (I assume a GoPro or similar), it would make them more appealing esthetically, without the fisheye effect.

As an Italian, I have to say that their statements about taxes are quite exagerated and incorrect. Of course taxes are high, and citizens could and should get back a lot more of what they do, in terms of services. Of course we have a lot of corruption and bad spending of public money. But when they say we get NOTHING in return, that is incorrect and very populist. For starters, we get a good public and free school system, affordable and good universities, a good and cheap healthcare. They don't get any of those in the US. Also, they don't mention the appalling rate of tax fraud, which is a big factor in this. The problem is not just high taxes, it's mainly bad spending and tax fraud. I think these things should be mentioned, if you want to show a balanced picture. On the other hand, when the guy says the current mood in Italy is "depressed", I think he's absolutely spot-on.

As an expat living in Rome for nearly 10 years, Rome has a love it/hate it/love it again vibe to it. Cicalone, as an Italian, complains about the way things are, but the rate of crime in Rome and in general, Italy, is very low. Nobody denies the fact that there is petty theft everywhere near the tourist areas, but there's nothing more dangerous than that. Criminals know that the punishment for armed robbery or worse is high, so you may be tricked out of your money, but not mugged. I have taken oh so many bus rides in the dead on the night, but nothing has ever happened to me

I would like to clarify some aspects of the "Italian thoughts" mentioned in the video. They said that in Italy people pay up to 48%, and that's true, some in certain ways even more than that if we consider other kinds of taxations. The thing is that in Italy we have "free" healthcare, public school system up to high school and tax reduction for university students with low family income (you pay regional taxes, like 100€ per year, and in some cases that's it), and many services that in many other countries are private. The biggest problem is not taxation, but tax evasion, there are many that do not pay taxes and that added to the poor investment management that our political system had made in years, it has increased the number of taxes required but not the benefits received from them. Another aspect that was mentioned in the video was about pensions, most of elderly can't live with their pension, that is based on many reasons, but one that I would like to highlight is that young generations have problems in finding jobs, creating new opportunities, or get small jobs just to live, in the last few years there were more young people living with elders' pension rather than the opposite.

9 месяцев назад
The bureaucracy is extremely bloated, public services rarely work as they should (as is the norm in the world, anyways), it's hard to start a business, the pension system is unsustainable. The problems in Italy are mostly the same as any European country nowadays, from Romania to Sweden. I personally think a little bit less gov. intervention would be welcome, however I don't - currently - live in Italy, so my opinion may not be "up to date".

Thank you so much for highlighting the fact that there are 2 sides to Rome of which I noticed on arrival at Termini. What stood out for me was the graffiti on many of the buildings close and surrounding the station. Then if you walk a few meters towards the tourist attractions, you think you are in a completely different city. I think many of the big cities in Europe, even London struggle with a lot of homelessness and perhaps it’s a wake up call for the governments to do more for their people especially when tourism is a major contributor to the economy.

But it doesn’t make sense to look at it that way. Paris? Only 2m residents in the city but it’s urban area has 13m. And now let’s compare it to let’s say Warsaw. I certainly felt far safer in Rome at night than I do in Melbourne, Australia where I live.

Are you for real? I'm from Rome and when I think of Australia I think of it being way safer than Rome (except for wild animals and insects😂)

Ive been to Melbourne and Rome, and for me Melbourne felt safer. But both are pretty okay for big cities.

Great video. Your tour guides are top guys. I stayed in Tiburtina and walked past those bad spots around Termini every day. A bit seedy but not very dangerous.

I think it's great to have videos like this. I lived in Bogota Colombia for a while and there's tons of absolutely beautiful areas and safe areas, but it's good to know the bad side too because that's life.
