I might be wrong because of how media portrays inmates, but I love how there’s no shouting, yelling, slamming of doors etc... like it’s calm in this prison.
I did an O level Drama group piece about women's prison because of this video. Even now when I come back I'm still astounded by the kindness and compassion that the prison guards show. Kudos :)
Singapore prisons are so polite. *Unlike,* many other Asian countries' prisons, where prisoners are tortured so badly and brutally beaten up by the Police and the Prison Guards !
PLEASE NOTE, they are Not just prison guards. They also have to counsel prisoners in mental trouble too. Also note each supervisor is ARMED with a pepper spray and baton
Suspicious Samuel even so, the prisons are much better than elsewhere because while it is still harsh, the focus is still on rehabilitation rather than just pure condemnation
Dianne Diyana yes indeed. I am an Indian ! But honestly, the Singapore Police Force, is the ONLY Police Force in this World, *which I respect the most !* The Singapore Police Force is the Role Model for all the other Police Forces in the world ! I am so Proud that, I lived and studied in Singapore for 5 years!! Singapore *I Love You !!*
The whole atmosphere of the prison is so calming and reassuring, almost therapeutic. Everyone is softly spoken, the inmates themselves are polite and the guards are understanding. Love the fact they have counselling sessions and chances to learn hands on skills like hairdressing, Microsoft skills, etc. skills that will kickstart their motivation to contributing towards society in a positive manner when they do get released. I believe this is the best kind of atmosphere to really turn around someone’s life. No physical punishment, abuse, torturing. Just confinement, work and positive reinforcement.
I am a bit conflicted with this system of punishment and correction. Those two things are very important but there must be a harsher third element to imprisonment. Deterrent. If the worst that can happen to bad people is being confined, I'm not sure that in itself may not be enough to make someone take pause before committing a crime to begin with.
@@ZebraFacts the inmates here are those who committed less serious crimes lah... there are different prisons and prison systems depending on severity of crime. people in this video are mostly gamblers, physical assault or scammers, light drug consumers etc. Those who murder, are hanged alr LOL. Those with serious crimes (eg. sell drugs, child rapists) are in another prison
True from what i seen they probably are low-security inmate, that does low type of criminal deeds. Also this is a female prison, i think that contribute to as why this is more tender than the others.
@@bodyloverz30 Caning people teaches them that it is O.K to use violence to try to overcome difficulties. Better to teach prisoners to stay calm & think through the consequences of their actions, to use calm thought & reasoning.
It is clean because most inmates spend 23hrs/day in the cell. With limited number of books that can be in ur cell, u tend to want to find things to do to past time. For me and my cellmates, we used to wash up the whole cell aft lunch everyday with soap and water not only to maintain cleanliness and hygiene but also to past our time easier. In fact, we can take 2hrs just to wash one cell which houses 4inmates.
@@JangoMando maybe it is... then again maybe it isn't getting stuck on that dogma is a sure fire way of releasing your dreams and accepting your current set of miserable/mediocore circumstances. Gotta say sometimes it feels as if the path we take is too predictable from birth based on personality and life circumstances.
It’s nice to see how they actually get treated and make use of their capabilities to both contribute back to the society and feel useful, unlike other prisons were inmates are just burning time while doing nothing else that get more depressed, aggressive to leave with a traumatic experience.
The Singapore Prison Services ( SPS) is both an Harvard and INSEAD case study. Not many know that in 2013, together with Ritz Carlton, Bain, Microsoft to name a few, SPS was ranked the Best Employer in Singapore. To share a brief but impactful anecdote, at a Public Service Conference, a Deputy Director of from the Singapore Prison Services makes his opening remark ...` unlike the hospitality sector, we in Singapore Prison Services work towards NOT having repeat customers `
I'm pretty sure Singapore has a low crime rate (what I've heard from my relatives in Singapore) and making them a better person is key. Prisons in different countries do this more than be strict, mistreat them whatever the reason. It's nice to see how prison in different countries work, first time seeing the only woman's prison.
ye the crime rate is pretty low but the punishments for some crimes are bleh cause you could get caning prison canings are worse but schools are given permission to cane students with the parents consent if they do something really bad like molest but you could go to prison if you’re over 16 if you’re under you go to like a help center or girls/boys home :/
@@Vyn_REALITY The heavy punishments are actually good because it deters many people from commiting crimes so they'll think twice before they do anything.
i think you have seen the part when they do the daily morning strip inspection yet. Nor the part where the inmate are asked to squat when they are fully naked and their mense dripping.
Men one is pretty dark. I never seen it but I remember they sent Normal Tech students as an excursion there, they came back sharing to their Acad & Express peers how dark & terrifying it was lol. With caning, squats and stuffs. I wonder why they only sent Normal Tech students though? Maybe the school had the perception lower educated students have more risks doing crimes?
Obviously it is made to look nice on the TV for the public to see. I don't understand why there are so many donkeys around who foolishly believe what they see on the screen is real.
Si Han Chen i heard lots of horrific things they do to prisoners especially the mens section its reallyinhumane and disgusting.I do know cause i know many people personally who when in and out of prison
Zam Han Yep that's always the case, people try to say "Wow! This country is great or "Wow! My country is amazing!" But never see off-screen. As a Singaporean, honestly I don't think we're the nicest people in the world and definitely don't treat prisoners with respect. Then again most countries don't. Guess it's just human nature?
This gives a great insight to the lives of those who are in prison, and the struggles that they go through. It shows them in a fresh light where we are able to better understand them. This is amazing! I'm glad that this short documentary exists to allow us a window into something that we would otherwise be ignorant about. Thank you!
Yup been there too for 2 years in mens Prison serving my NS there. You have to step in to the cell then we can understand how it felt like to stuck to a room of 4 walls for 24 hrs a day..
Do they get to have things to develop a skill on? Prison is a great time to learn and hone a skill, so much time and no distractions! Authorities, please consider this idea.
Singapore is known for being systematic, neat, clean and proper! These are all the things you feel when you enter Singapore especially when you see how clean the roads are just makes you so happy. I’m from neighbouring country once Singapore was part of Malaysia before the separation and astounds me how it progress, big credit goes to Mr Lee Kuan Yew. The prison state and its staff and entire concept did not surprise me just shows how they would like to rehabilitate their citizen to become good citizen. Kudos Singapore 🇸🇬
You get a straw mat to sleep on and blanket. In the morning (at 6am), you wake up, put those mats away and can't use it till bedtime again. The whole day you sit, sleep, on the hard cement floor. No pillows. No shampoo, floss, etc. They provide some cheap toothpaste, no colgate here. You are stuck in a cell 24 hours a day sometimes. You are not allowed to exercise inside the cell. Want to write a letter home? That takes weeks to be delivered. It is total, utter lack of any activity for the mind or body. Definitely nothing like a dorm.
What a thoughtful prison....a prison which gives it's inmates a chance to think over their actions of the past and reform themselves with positive thoughts and actions 👏👏👏👏👏👏
The animals, the animals Trapped, trapped, trapped 'till the cage is full The cage is full the day is new And everyone is waiting, waiting on you And you've goooooooot timmmmmeeeee!
The officers and Counsellors are like living angels to the inmates🥰, caring and empathetic! I hope the inmates can turn over a new leaf and lead a better life! It is great to know that they are picking up skills and can be a useful and happy person in future! Life is impermanent, cherish the opportunity of a second chance! Good luck!
Thank you for this video! We are all the same, I think. Any one of us could make a wrong decision. It is nice to see correctional officers wanting the best for their women under there supervision. Keep up the good work! Laura
I totally love this type of prison. Yes, it might not be applicable for all criminals, but for some mediocre crime but can't evade the law should be treated in this way. IMO it is unfair for a poor man who stole just a chicken from the neighbourhood to be in the same cell/prison with a drug dealer, homicide, rapist, etc
it’s great that the officers are engaging nicely with the inmates and not treating them badly. Being in there and not seeing the outside world can be depressing. People make poor choices in life but they’re still human beings.
Having lived in Singapore for the past 14 years, I can say: 1) no country or government, including Singapore, is perfect; and 2) the circumstances and conditions between Singapore and my country are very different; but there's so much my country could learn from this. Humane/humanity.
@@Tendummiez69420 And my country separates children from their parents and puts them in cages; invades sovereign countries; lets citizens die without healthcare; enables a madman to run roughshod over our constitution without reigning him in; and the list goes on. The point here is what Sʻpore is doing to try to rehabilitate these people.
Wow! Kudos to Singapore. This is the exact opposite of female prison in Nigeria where inmates lack basic things like sanitary pads and toilet tissue papers. A visit to a female prison in Nigeria will make you cry.
I find this an excellent example of how, despite the strict restrictions and regulation of Singapore, people still make mistakes: but instead of being inhibited to receive the help you never thought you needed; freedom to keep your individuality; and never heard, here we have people who care about the welfare of the incarcerated and the people outside who may be related or unrelated to these detained persons who make up a system with positive, progressive goals and objectives.
This is a huge difference from the prisons here in the United States. Here in the U.S. there is screaming and shouting, fighting, stabbing all kinds of violence. This prison is calm, quiet , the inmates are respectful. The guards are nice and kind. Big difference.
"During the first few weeks, prisoners must spend 23 hours in their cell to reflect on past actions. They can use the remaining 1 hour to use the iKiosk to checkup on administrative requests" - That has got to be the most Singaporean way to run a women's prison... The only way you could make this more Singaporean is if inmates can use the iKiosk to write formal complaints directly to members of parliament.
I read somewhere... If most of our society didn't opt for the so called "masculine" methods we would have been better... Because what is the ideal "feminine" quality...it has the power of changing millions... I don't want to start a gender war here...I just want to say that throughout the ages.. feminine quality is "tenderness, soft nature, sympathy, empathy" These things are very powerful
I also read somewhere... if most of our society didn't opt for the so called "masculine" methods, we would've been still living in grass huts. I don't want to start a gender war... just wanted to say that masculinity & femininity are the 2 wings of the same bird. You're a fool to think otherwise
They do. Only the closest in your family, and your family need to make a call to prison to announced the death of tbe inmates next of kin. After that they have to come and "bail" you out to attend funeral while wearing the prison jumpsuit and shackles and guards bringing you and escort you to the funeral for 1 and half hours but only limited communications allowed with another cloaest family member. After that they will bring you back to prison.
So different from prisons in the US. It's too bad that our authorities won't learn from other cultures. I'm curious to know if the prisoners were required to cut their hair? They all have short hair. And do men make up any of the prison guards or staff, kitchen workers? I wouldn't think so or many of the prisoners would be wearing a hijab, right?
Holly Bercik I get scared when I see the American prison because the inmates speak tonnes of vulgar and the officers are so aggressive... Sometimes force is not the best way.
A4 is for women's only. There are other Housing units that are purely for men. The women prisons only have women guards, but the men's has both. Also, I don't think you can wear hijab inside. If we allow that, then different religion also want to practice their faith too. Fairness is super important.
People still think locking people up make them reflect, honest truth is it doesn't. It makes you think of alot of things, makes you crazy at some point and finally accepting that being crazy is the only way to be normal. Take it from me. To change people is attention and guidance. Once they step out and touch or meet something bad, downhill from there
I wish that it could be like this in the states maybe someplace where inmates go before they are able to go home, so it can slowly get them use to not always having to be on their guard. That way the transition from incarceration to being free could possibly be smoother. At this time they can have more access to being able to get a job and already sign up for other support groups etc. They need to experience a calm environment before they are released. Like maybe their last year of incarceration could be at a facility that is similar to that.
Good job Singapore , you treat your criminals with huge respect , the officers also talk to them in a nice , friendly soft spoken manners... No shouting like in certain countries .
you want to know why? because singapore is basically a jail for everyone. no freedom of speech, living in a tiny downsize house cos financial incapability disallowing you from buying a bigger house. our daily routine for every office workers is basically prison labor, no pay for overtime.
randomyoutubereader if you feel that way then get a better job. Its nothing like prison, you get to interact with friends and family, eat what you want, get technology and much more. I wouldn't want a big house anyways, its really hard to clean. But I'm moving to a condo for the facilities. Singapore has limited land so the houses are expensive.
holy guacamole most of the job expected you to work more than the office hours. as compared to other country, Singapore is pretty much a living prison. Griddle Puff suggest that the prison was "kinda fun". precisely, because our dear singaporean imprisoned themselves, stucked in a 24 hour work clock, work, eat and go back to sleep. it is sad to say singapore are slowly progressively turning to like hongkong or japan. limited freedom and long working hours.
Norway's prison is practically a resort and the Netherlands turned their vacant prison cells into rooms for refugees since the number of prisoners there was getting lower, you wanna know how much a country has evolved, just look at 2 things, their toilets and their prisons
This is what prison facilities should be. It's to give the prisoners space to think about what they have done wrong and to decide not to do it again, and be transformed to a better citizen. In a quiet and safe environment. Unlike here in the Philippines, the prisons are very small and tight like a can of sardines, the prisoners get worse and sometimes they have gone insane!
The recidivism rate is probably lower too. I would've thought that their prison system would be bad, but it's a good idea. These women are getting help, unlike some American and other prisons, where they're released into society completely unprepared for the outside world. There called correctional facilities, but this women's prison is just that, they get help to change what got them in prison. That's what a prison should do, because the recidivism rate would be lowered to a greater extent than what is currently.
The system in Singapore is great they teach them to be true to themselves and reflect so this way when they get out they will be less likely to commit another crime. Rather than in other countries they just lock them in their cell expecting them to reflect but in the end they learn nothing and will most likely just commit another crime
