Millions of tourists flock to Spain’s sun-soaked Costa del Sol every year-so is it worth joining the herds? Beyond the obvious warm weather and long stretches of beach, this coastal sliver of Southern Spain’s Andalusia region (home to flamenco, bullfighting, and Picasso) has no shortage of history and art.
We based ourselves in the beach area of Elviria near the popular seaside city of Marbella and hopped between beaches, tapas bars, Moorish landmarks, and scenic peaks. We checked out the historical pueblo blanco of Ojen and the Old Town of Malaga to visit the Picasso Museum.
We also spent a day in the tiny UK territory of Gibraltar, a mere 7.7 nautical miles from Morocco, to take a scenic climb up the iconic Rock of Gibraltar.
Vamonos!

Manchego is a favorite along with patatas brava. We had Rioja wine that was incredible as well.

@@BigSmallTravel When I drink Rioja wine I look for crianza or reserva. When the wine is aged in oak it seems to haver a more robust finish. Interestingly the French do not allow the Spaniards to age wine in French Oak. The Spaniards use American oak barrels.

Aging in American oak has many benefits . The oak is sweeter and contains more vanillin compounds.@@julian65886

We also had a Tempranillo that was quite good. Spanish wine is overlooked by Italian and French wine in Europe, but there are a lot of good options for red wine in Spain. @@julian65886
