Melting sea ice in the Arctic is spurring a scramble for resources, shipping routes and strategic strongholds in the region. WSJ’s Michael M. Phillips travels to Tin City, Alaska, to see what that means for the U.S. military's strategy in the far North.

I have a suggestion as a Canadian we cannot assume or act like the United States will do all the securing/ air space defense. Canada has a significant portion of artic airspace and waterway. You can bet the Russians will encroach further and further from their north to our north if we let them Canada needs to show a strong message that we will defend this area, and also show the Americans we will support them also instead being cared for by the Americans.

I'm suprized they don't mention the fact that an actual attack from Russian bombers via the Arctic would not involve actual airspace penetration. Instead, bombers would fly to about 200-300 miles off the coast while launching a massive salvo of nuclear cruise missiles. Bombers don't need to penetrate airspace at all.

Very true I worked on the cold war era DEWLINE in the Canadian arctic in the 80's and 90's on many stations in the Yukon and NWT which is now known as the North Warning System under Norad. The reality is both sides test each other to see how they react to zone penetration but the cost of escalation is to great to contemplate therefore they play mental chess and politics.

Russia has been trying for years now to enter or slip American defenses in each side and artic is the best passage to access north america route it's is obvious the weak spot of American power so its just right to protect there own interest although russia and china are not actively invading countries or attacking anyone its just waiting for the perfect time to enter a Trojan horse on American soil. Russia has it owns history of genocides and china has its own ancient history of colonization on its region as dynasties. I was stationed at "the Tin" in late 60s, in Ops, and yeah, I could see Russia from my bedroom (Big Diomede, actually, but you can see the Siberian mainland from Hilltop Camp). These guys are trying to justify their existence by conflating a "threat" that is not what they make it out to be. Look at the map at 5:40--he said that it shows intercepts going back to Cold War days. What he doesn't say is what those flights represent. I'm not doubting the Russians might probe defenses although I saw no instance of it in my time. What the Russians did do was fly over US airspace in the Bering Sea to examine the ice, usually low and slow in prop planes like the Li-2 (a DC-3 copy). These overflights occurred in the Spring (breakup season) and Fall (freeze up season). They supply their Siberian north slope settlements by ship and so they monitor ice conditions closely. Some threat eh? We knew what the "ice flights" were, knew they were no threat, but HQ launched on them every time because . . .because. . .because . . . Meanwhile, multiple times each day we watched US military aircraft exit our radar coverage as they flew Elint (electronic intelligence probes) and refueling station missions along the Siberian north coast. Who was it that was being aggressive?

It's not gonna be a nuke war.. it's to protect the northern passage and make sure it stays free for everyone to use. That's about it. Think about how much oil and fuel this will save. Think about how much emissions we have created going around continents instead of going through it. This will also now reduce emissions because the route cuts the distance to a fraction of what it use to be. Nothing about claiming territory.. its about making sure shipping lanes remain free for everyone to use. You co trolling trade routes.. you can control the economy.

they should respond at random times to not show the exact time frame of when they will make contact. So it can't be put into a database that allows the enemy to know exactly what time will they make contact to be better prepared for the an attack. If you make it at different times then enemy would never know your radars exact capabilities are. Prevents the enemy from knowing your exact response time and what they can expect when they do make contact. I'm sure yall have thought this thru or at least I hope. Well heres a better reponse. Not making a new path... it melted away itself exposing a new opportunity. Making it safe for anyone to travel is another. Which no one else is willing to do or will out out the money to do. The part you are correct on is the environmental part. This shorter route will cut cost.. decrease carbon emissions because only a fraction of the fuel will be used to ship. Something 5000 Miles away may be a 1000 direct route. We are about 15,000 years overdue for another polar reversal. During that period.. the climate will change like it has done in the past. The environmentalist somehow global warming is all man made. Only a small fraction is. And yet again the environmentalist fail to see that all this meat they are eating is the true cause. Increased demands for cattle, which in turn means more cattle. Livestock alone contributes to 20% of the greenhouse gasses. Everytime thebtreehugger rally... they create an increase an increase on fuel consumption. Oil makes plastic and even the clothes you wear, metals. Most the stuff you use is made from oil. Even stuff not made by oil used oil in the machines to make the product. Food is transport by oil. Remember those Tesla electric cars? All made by oil. They said electric was better than oil. Now they are finding out that the electric cars harm the environment even more. There isnt a way to dispose of all the used batteries. They dont know what to do with them and will end up in the ocean.

It's going to repeat itself again. The canadians little brothers will come running to big brother US as soon as you see the Russians closing in near you guys and start building military bases. What's funny is this passage runs through Canada. The russians will be intruding in your space too. The passage runs through canada. Before this passage, ships had to go around.. now they can cut straight through. You're gonna love it when Russia claims the passage that runs through your country.

I am French and despite having Russia as neighbor showing more and more airplanes flying by French airspace, I dont really see Russia as a major threat given the capacity that for instance UK, France, and Germany could put together to stop any ground or air attack. So when you think about the United States, which has been spending 10 times more than Russia in its military equipment and troops, I dont really see how Russia could be a serious threat to the United States. I mean all these military people we see in the video are clearly dramatizing the situation to scare the American audience, and of course to keep military spending at the highest level possible...

@@alberthenriette8976 You are joking, right? The Idea of Scalar Waves & Quantum Physics as weapons is so far out, even the super crazy-people don´t push this stories anymore since a very long time. All Russia produces is corruption and violations of basic human rights; its Orc Army might be able to murder children & woman and very old people on bicycles, however against an actual Western Military Power it would stand zero chances as they actually fight back and then the military gear from the 1960 that Russia is mostly using today is worthless...
