Shermans were the size they were because they had to be transportable. Getting Centurions ashore would have been the issue.

I served with REME Fitters Troop B Squadron 1st RTR and the Royal Armoured Corp training unit at Catterick. In Germany I was a member of Periodic REME teams inspection on tanks in BAOR. The Centurion was incredibly unreliable, the main engine which developed 650 BHP had twin spark plugs per cylinder, the exhaust plugs on the outer sections of the Vee oiled up regularly and the engine would lose power. We used to do mag drop tests when the engine was at normal running temp. If there was a rpm drop of 250 we would change all the spark plugs and on a hot engine it was torture.. He is wrong in saying the clutch was accessed through the belly plate, it was accessed from the top where we did all the work on engines and transmissions including changing the clutch life of which it had three. The engine was designed to use 4 pints oil/hour and the tank held 33 gallons. Fuel on the MK 12 / 13 was 212 gallon with a range of about 65 miles. Fuel consumption was 3/4 gallons per hour. The main brakes wouldn't stop a tank on steep downward descent, they weren't power assisted and one used to literally stand on the brake pedal. This required Centurion drivers to be very good with gear changes on the Merritt Brown crash gearbox. The ARV when towing a gun tank was over 100 English tons, a bastard on steep hills. I remember when in Berlin towing a dead gun tank through a bus station as the Berliners were going to work the ARV couldn't gain traction on the cobblestones and the steel tracks started picking them up and throwing them around. The German police stopped the complete traffic flow so that we could negotiate a bend and moved the locals as we slowly slid towards them, we made it and brought back 5 gun tanks to Smuts Barracks that day probably to the delight of the Russian guards whose turn it was to guard Hess. I commanded, drove, inspected and repaired Centurions. Believe me we were very happy to see the Chieftain Mk 3S (S for sand, Iran contract) when we re equipped despite its problems. I remember working as an inspector for the Royal Ordnance factories UK involved with the 4030 phase 1,2 and 3 which became the Challenger. Australia was still ordering parts for Centurions from ROF Leeds. We received and order for 3 Centurion final drives. In my 13 years in REME and working for 11 Fd WKSPS FRG in both Europe and Canada I never changed a Centurion final drive for the Brits. In EMER's (Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Manuals, ) there was 250 modifications of varying degrees, Chieftain was in the thousands within the first 4 years. I liked the Centurion, the faults were known and we had developed the tools to work in places where one needed to be almost double jointed. Rarely did we experience something beyond our control.

I think maybe you meant fuel consumption was 34 gph? Even that seems pretty low

I have an idea that the Australian Centurion that was "nuked", later also saw service with Australian Forces in Vietnam.

The hatches blew open. The crew would have been killed. While a crew was taking it without decontamination back to base the engine threw a rod. It made it's way to Vietnam where it was hit by rpg and crew injured. Eventually the tank was placed on display at a base. The majority of the soldiers working on it after the nuclear test reportedly died of cancer.

Canister shot was well used on several operations to clear vegetation from VC/NVA bunkers and to be followed up with a HE round and crushing of the bunker by the Centurion. The Centurion also had the advantage over the M113 in being able to crush its way through thick jungle. When damaged by mines the components could be unbolted and field repaired/swapped out on a Centurion whereas the same damage to a US tank would be deemed a write off.

yes Mark a truly remarkable vehicle-my late friend Ilya Todorovich-ex "Nasho" was a loader on them during my time in SVN-an RPG 7 could hurt them of course-I don't recall too many of them written off-Ilya told me the Centurion was designed to battle the Tiger tank-interesting story. Regards Ron

uberdice you should have visited the Bovington tank museum back in the early 2000s. WE would go midweek, in Autumn, nobody around apart from the occasional guy in an overall and he barely looked at me clambering into a PzIV. I lost count of the number of tanks I climbed into. I'm 5'9' so I found them not too cramped although I did bash my head quite a few times but it was worth it. I only had a small magilite to see around and the wide beam on those little torches is not very useful [they're usually used on guns to provide a narrow beam for about 20m]. Was a great feeling though. The occasional person who worked there looked at me standing on the Porsche turret Tiger as he rushed past. He couldn't care less. Prob cos I couldn't get into that... I think it was jammed somehow? The place has changed a LOT since then.

Yup, it's a 1/2inch plate-steel box full of petrol. I replaced one on a cent' bridgelayer back in 1975, We were amazed (aka horrified) to find how thin it was - that said, even now there are lots of afvs which carry external fuel tanks/drums.
