Inside the Chieftain's Hatch: IS-3M, Part 1

The IS-3, when it first appeared on the scene, was a shock to the West and created a "Tank Panic". Lean, mean... and with a number of flaws not immediately evident, it was a tank which had a psychological and cultural effect far in excess of its numbers built. This vehicle is located in Bastogne Barracks, Belgium.
This is the first batch where I have invested in bringing along a cameraman/editor, goes by FixItInPost, and as you can imagine, he doesn't work for free. Any financial support you can throw in below would be greatly appreciated. This was a test case to see if it's economically viable.

@@AKUJIVALDO In 30+ years of gaming, I've never played a PVP game that wasn't frustrating at some point. WG makes amazing products that cater to a number of different audiences. In today's gaming market, you can't make games that solely cater to 200k sweats. Gaming companies are forced to make choices that make the game more appealing to casual players as well. If you love a game and it's community, you have to accept this fact for the health and the state of the game in the long run. Once you do accept that, things are a lot less frustrating that the game doesn't live up to your sweat fest expectations. 👍🏼

Some guys on internet, who had seen it only in videogames and propaganda: IS-3 was the best, it was so cool, it was unmatched. Actual people, who had experience with production quality IS-3: immediately restart development of IS-5, put IS-4 into production, spend insane amount of money to fix at least some production defects of IS-3, retain IS-2 in active service until T-10 is ready, test two rangefinder types on IS-3, but never adopt a single one for it because it won't be modified, never give it D-25TU/TS/D-49 gun or any ammo from it. And even captured by IDF IS-3 were only used as pillboxes and abandoned while trophy T-55 remain in IDF service even today as IFV and other hull conversions. All in all, the biggest impact of IS-3 was the fact that due to its presence on Berlin victory parade, it made Allies prepare to face the wrong vehicle. Had T-44 or even T-44-100 been present, they would have expected T-54 much sooner and concentrated more on massed AT rather then huge AT.

IS-4 was even less successful than 3, they built a few hundred on paper but it was very clearly an unreliable vehicle. It was only in the spotlight for maybe 2 years and it spent those years having every other vehicle that came out of the factory rejected entirely for not being functional enough to wage war in, eventually they just got tired of the vehicle and sent them all to the Far east where there was less need for quality tanks (despite the vehicles armour being certainly overkill for anything the Chinese had for another 15 years).

We have one here in Czechia too. Not a runner, as far as I know, unfortunately. Seeing it for the first time, knowing it's reputation and the effect it had in history, all I could think was: "Huh. I thought it would be bigger." You can't really call it a "small" tank, but it doesn't particularly stand out from all the T-55's and T-62's it's positioned next to, and is absolutely dwarfed by some of the big boys (both IS-2 and M-48 are over half a meter taller, for example). The other notable think when you look at it closely is the atrocious craftsmanship, visible in the video for example at 6:50. But despite all this, it's still a badass tank.

One can definitely tell the Chieftain was not happy about going inside the thing. It's palpable from the very beginning of the video. 😂

The sloping of the side hull of IS-3 actually increases the internal volume of the tank compared to the IS-2. Essentially the IS-3 is the IS-2 side hull, with outward sloping of the upper sections of the side hull. The outward sloping increases the volume inside the tank, it does not reduce it.

No, it really doesn't. If you compare the two armour diagrams I've linked below you'll see how the IS-3 scheme sacrifices most of the space in the sponsons. wiki.warthunder.com/index.php?title=IS-2#/media/File:IS-2_scheme_of_armour.jpg www.globalsecurity.org/jhtml/jframe.html#www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/russia/images/is-3-image07.jpg|||IS-3%20Heavy%20Tank

The real improvement in armor profile over the IS-2 for the hull isn't so much in the pike shaped glacis, but in the fact the driver's hatch is almost flat with the roof, and there's no longer a vision port right smack in the middle of the frontal armor...which is how David Fletcher would put it "less than ideal". This also may have improved the driver's unbuttoned peripheral vision slightly as well, since now his head is poking abve the hull with the hatch open, instead of being back inside the tank and able to only look forward. I can't wait to see if the Chieftain fits inside an IS-3...oh bugger, the Log is on fire! XD

@@rupertboleyn3885 I'm probably naive, but : isn't it a bad idea to let a pipe connected to your fuel arrival dangle around ? I've got it, the tanks will eventually stay on the side of the road. And they probably have a valve too, they're not stupid. But well. I can't help but feel it's kind of creating a weak point on purpose. More importantly : Why ditch the tanks at all ? It's not an airplane. You'll gain what, five meters of autonomy ?
@rupertboleyn3885

@@lc1138 I don't know why they'd want to ditch the tanks, but presumably they found there was a need for the ability to do so from inside the tank.

It's a fascinating tank - on one hand, a lot of these features that aren't new, but they were not so often packed together. Impressive armor protection values, a strong gun and all this with a pretty reasonable mass. However, once you get into details it turns out to be much, MUCH worse than the numbers and the initial look would suggest :D

"... It symbolizes a generational leap in tank technology. In actuality, it didn't do any such thing in any shape or form." Well, maybe it wasn't a "generational leap", but it sure scared every nation who saw it in to thinking they had to do better. So in fairness, it pushed tank technology ahead.

Great stuff as always Chief. I've always resented the IS-3 because of how "good" people think it is, when in reality it was a pretty middling tank, and seemed like it was designed for WoT more than anything. Zero regard for crew ergonomics let alone comfort, taken to the extreme. They look cool and can boast impressive figures on paper, but not much more. Soviet Cold War armored design still had a lot of maturing to do.
