I examined a knocked out M47 in Croatia in 2000, the right side of the hull was torn open by either a large AT mine or a bomb. Hard to imagine steel like that getting opened up like it was paper. Despite the mega hit it was not burned out.

The M47 turret liked to funnel water into the driver and bow gunner/assistant driver's hatch and right on their head when unbuttoned hence the additions of the rain guard. However I've been told many crews removed them because while it worked great when the turret was forwards or to the rear when on sentry and the turret was off to the side the rain guards would funnel even more water into one of the two hatches.

The M47 stood in for German Tigers in the movie "Battle of the Bulge" (1965 release, starring Peter Fonda and Robert Shaw.) As the movie was filmed entirely in Spain, Spanish Army M47s and the M24s (that stood in for the American tanks) were used.

I really wish Wargaming would let The Chieftan upload ALL content in which he is featured on his own youtube channel, and simply queue up a time (say a week or two) after it is released on the official Wargaming youtube sources when it will become publically viewable, so as to keep the time-sensitive exclusivity on his content for WoT channels.

+smokeydops I once asked him about this on one of his livestreams, and he said that his own RU-vid channel is not controlled by him but also by Wargaming.

Nick, that unit designation doesn't make a lick of sense. It should have been 3▲1-33▲ for 3rd Armored Division 1st Battalion of 33rd Armored Regiment.

The Germans had a marginally similar system (w/o the shapes) with their Tigers. Sort of the same problem with the US dating system.

whats the idlear wheel purpose?
@ptonpc
@ptonpc 8 лет назад
+blacklupos The track bends around it at the end of the tank and reduces the angle of the track, going to the road. It makes it easier for the tank to climb surfaces and reduces the changes of objects breaking the track.

Did I read correctly that this was the only post-war US tank, not to see combat with the US Army?
@ITSPLANEWHACKHIM
@ITSPLANEWHACKHIM 8 лет назад
+The Paranoid Blues Man yes. quite a few were built, but the M48 which succeeded it saw use in the next war the US tangled in- vietnam. the M47 was exported so it probably saw combat for a middle eastern or south american country perhaps.

Speaking as an old tanker, if the tracks and wheels are messed up, you don't have a tank. And it's surprisingly easy to throw a track if the track tension is wrong - and an absolute groan of a job to fix it. Oh, BTW, it ain't Maintenance's responsibility. They'll tell you, "You broke it, you fix it." And they're right, the Dash 10 (Operator's Manual) states that First Level Maintenance is a crew responsibility and tells you how to do it. That includes replacing track, wheels and torsion bars. All manually, tanks don't have power tools. Ask any tanker, this is NOT what we dreamed of doing when we joined up. So there is a lot of attention in maintaining them so we don't have to fix something terrible. Second Level (Unit) maintenance is performed by the company maintenance section and battalion maintenance platoon with crew assisting and is guided by the Dash 20. The Dash 30 is the bible of the Divisional Direct Support Maintenance Battalion. The Corps/Army General Support Maintenance Battalion follows the Dash 40 and the Theater/CONUSDepots follow the Dash 50. Each manual authorizes more extensive disassembly and repair to the point that Depots can strip it down to a bare hull, jack up the serial number and build a new tank under it. lat how to perform it. Dash 20covers company section and battalion maintenance . Dash 30 is for the Direct Support Maintenance Battalion. Dash 40 is for the Corps/Army level General Support Maintenance Battalion. Dash 50 is for the Theater/CONUS Maintenance Depot.

No one cares about the suspension. I will post this on as many of these vids as possible as I watch them. Stop spending 70% of the video talking about the suspension. WE DONT CARE. We arent trying to operate and maintain a tank and we dont care about how much effort you had to put into maintaining the tracks. Its boring talk about the attributes we care about.
