A side-upgrade of SK-105. Often incorrectly terms "SK-105A3", this pre-dates the A2 upgrade and wasn't given a designation. The SK-105 is an Austrian vehicle using the French-style oscillating turret. The design supposedly came with a number of drawbacks, such as stabilisation problems (Stabilising a multi-ton turret instead of just a gun) and NBC problems. However, Austrian engineers had a crack at these problems, creating the vehicle you saw in parts 1 and 2. However, there was a further attempt at an upgrade, to use the more powerful NATO-standard 105mm gun. The request was made by Argentina to use the same gun as their TAM tank, and as Austria used a compatible gun on the M60, it made sense from the Austrian perspective as well.

Chieftan, many of us have stuck around for so long even during the era of the same 10 second music repeating indefinitely throughout the entire length of the video, we can survive audio or visual issues out of your control for a video or two xD. Old jokes aside, we're fine if a few videos need to get released with a less than normal level of quality due to technical issues. Any reasonable person would understand technical issues happen, and sometimes the information is more entertaining and important regardless of the issues, as this one was.

@@laurisikio Vienna only does it annually but the rest of Austria does test them weekly. Maybe because the signalling chain is more complex, less redundancy and they are more likely to need it? The national, state and local district authorities are supposed to be able to trigger them. So more to go to wrong and it is easier for things to break or to be broken. In Vienna the districts are not able to trigger them, plus the town hall and national authority are very close together so everything is very centralized. Also you have a lot more redundancy in VIenna. One or two sirens fail? You probably have still another half a dozen within hearing range. That is likely not the case in the more rural areas.

I have made some investigations for improving live audio quality. What you can do is use a multi frequency sound gate and use a separate sound source as a trigger. The recommended microphone for this would be a throat mic but the main issue I have had with this is to actually find a good gate that has exposed the option to use a second channel for the gate trigger. Personally I think that it will definitely be worth finding a noise gate that would be able to do this and the secondary microphone since it can definitely clean up situations like this that otherwise would risk getting scrapped.

From a layman's view it seems that the big issues with the tank could have been identified at the engineering drawing stage. I wonder if they thought if it was close enough to usable to make a prototype or if they were studying other things from a systems design perspective.

That turret looks a bit absurd on that chassis. It really does look like they took the turret off a much, much larger tank, shoehorned into the turret ring and said "Looks good! Ship it!" and then wondered why people were asking if it was upside down. Though it might be the oscillating turret that really makes it look like it has just a massive melon on it's shoulders. Maybe a regular turret would look a bit more normal. Or worse, I don't know. But as wonky as it looks, the extra size CLEARLY didn't translate internally as far as the crew is concerned. Definitely wouldn't want to be in there the day after a long night of beer and sauerkraut. Asphyxiation via flatulence probably isn't a good way to go, and it would probably come quick with so little room for it to thin out...

Have they thought of adding magnetic shock abosrbers to take up some of the recoil?
@builder396
@builder396 11 месяцев назад
It wouldnt solve the issue any more than stronger springs. You still have a given amount of recoil energy, and a given amount of space the gun can travel to stretch out the time the vehicle has to absorb it. There is just too much recoil and too little time to absorb it, so it threatens to kick over the vehicle. If anything the springs would need to be weaker so the gun travels back for a longer time making the absorption of the recoil more gradual, but the turret just isnt big enough. Stronger springs would just make the problem of kicking the vehicle over worse.

@@readhistory2023 The issue isnt what type of shocks, springs or whatever you put in there, its just too much recoil energy and too little space to dissipate it, so the tank wont fall on its side all the time. End of. Magnetic shocks change neither of these two variables, so its a moot point.

As much ax we all want to see Col Moran wearing a fur stole, he explained at the beginning that this was filmed a year ago before he solved some problems with his equipment.

12:50 you didn't record this on a saturday at midday did you? *Edit*: just found your comment that it was a week day. So probably a car accident where the local firebrigade had to help. (the most common reason for the voluntary firebrigade to have to assemble and get inot action) (As others already said Saturday noon is the time for siren testing time in austria. Especially the first saturday in the month: When Tshernobyl happened, our autorities thought about getting some form of early warning system for civilians in case of catastrophes. Man made and nature ones. And the sirens of the fire deparments etc. got connected to a warning "hub" in each of the federal states. And they are connected to the ministery of the interior. So if anyone of them notices somethng potentially harmfull for the population they can act. No matter if floodings, avelanches... the "Landeswarnzentrale" has us covered ;-) )

Good god this thing is awful. At this point i have to wonder why they didn't bin the idea of giving it a turret at all, and simply made it a casemate tank instead of making something thats up there with Valiant in terms of how terrible it is? Cramped, unstable, less ammo than an AMX-13, prone to fall over if you fire over the sides... I wouldn't be surprised if the recoil would start to break things very quickly in service, too. Side note, Valiant is one i've always wanted to see an Inside the Hatch on. That and the Independent.

Probably taken off of (or intended to go on) an American tank, the Austrians used a variety of them throughout the Cold War.
