When these came out I was excited to see some sort of engineering that removed the noise of blades moving through the air. I was disappointed to realize the fan blades had been moved into the base, and it wasn't actually blade-less, and it actually made more noise than a traditional fan.

You've made a concept that has escaped me for a long time now very clear and I can say I finally get how rotors and stators now work in a Turbine.

The solder joint on the mains cable was to change from the normal type of wire to silicone flexible cable so it doesn't break with repeated bending from the oscillator.

Very nice tear down. Thank you! Your references to the gas turbine engine was cool!

While Dyson does have some interesting engineering in their products, I've never felt they represented good value compared with more conventional mundane appliances. I'm not a fan of this kind of tech overkill. Desk fans don't need remotes or digital displays. I'd much rather the effort went into making the products more durable so we're not throwing them out after a year or two and clogging our landfills with e-waste.

During the pandemic, I invested in an otherwise traditional "tower" fan (Vertical axis centrifugal fan). But it had HEPA filters (good enough for hospital quaulity) and UV-C sterilizers. So we could host when rules permitted but people could feel a little less at risk indors. That had actual quantifiable benifits, and still cost less new than this fan would have.

The smooth air, low noise, and design are sublime. But they are expensive and don't move a lot of air IMHO.

If you need to move air about, then any fan will perform as well. If you want to spend extra for the design or asthetics, I guess you could make the decision in most product catagories?

It has a motor, and it has blades. What makes it a "bladeless fan"? Thanks for the teardown :)

"Paying a lot of money for something not very special" pretty much describes Dyson!

At least you can tell is very well made, no cheap parts as far I can see.

Quite a good and interesting tear down, suggest you checkout a few of BigClives teardown videos and have an insulated bit of metal to discharge caps for safety! Isn't the whole point of successful marketing to make something for a lot less than it costs to make? It's called business. I had one of the Dyson circular fans and was very impressed by it's performance and the way it 'focussed' the air stream, until I came across a more modern open fan one which seemed very similar in performance. Not having a power meter I couldn't compare the performance per watt which would have been VERY interesting. Was it worth the high cost for the benefits, I very much doubt it! Nevertheless Thank You for a very interesting video.

I remember seeing one at a store and turning it all the way up to find out how well it worked. Not even as good as a $10 Cooler Master fan, really disappointing.

I'm still trying to work out if their bladless USP has practical implications, or if it is just a design choice?
