Built in 1953, the Giant Heart exhibit, originally called the "Engine of Life" exhibit, is one of the most popular and notable exhibits at the Franklin Institute. The exhibit is roughly two stories tall and 35-feet in diameter. A walk-through exhibit, visitors can explore the different areas of the heart.
For more than half a century, walking through the Giant Heart has been a rite of passage for children in Philadelphia. With a dynamic human heartbeat emanating from within and a fresh, artistic spray of paint, now is the perfect time to revisit the newly-refreshed, beloved Giant Heart and the surrounding bioscience gallery. No visit to The Franklin Institute would be complete without visiting the icon that generations love with all their hearts!
See live heart and eye dissections daily, now shown in greater detail in our state of the art demonstration space. Watch a real beating heart undergo surgery in video-on-demand. Check out the vibrant new look of the Giant Heart, view hand-painted red blood cells lining the walls, and walk across a new floor installation of the world’s largest map of Philadelphia.
You'll gain new insights into public health issues, crawl through a giant artery, and marvel at the size of a whale heart. This exhibit is a celebration of the heart-inside the human body and inside The Franklin Institute-and we think you’ll love it with all your heart, too.
Thanks so much for watching!

The heart exhibit was actually a real heart taken from a giant named Barney Gallagher. Barney donated the heart after he died and the family receives three cents from every visitor. Barney Gallagher was 276 feet tall and suffered from an overactive thyroid that made him grow very large. His dog was named Clifford the Big Red Dog and his pet was also Lucy the Elephant who went on to have a career in Margate.

Wow! This is actually such a cool exhibit. They put so much detail into the giant heart. So cool to walk through and see all of the different valves, veins, and how the heart works. This was a great tour and walk through! Thanks so much for taking us through, this was really cool!

@@TheMouseandMore Ok then I have bad memory. I remember in 1974 going through that spooky heart for a field trip as a youngin, my pappy flew oil line inspection copters up there for awhile, and I remember seeing it and having nightmares about it as a youngin. Thanks hoss, yall solved a 40ish year mystery to me, it's still cool, but freaky. 😳🤠👍😉
