The monastic outlay and dual system of celibate monks and married clergy is totally fascinating to me. Being from the states this is totally foreign. In biography of Dostoevsky I read that the married clergy outside monastic complexes were mostly fairly ordinary guys and far less educated. Their tasks were mainly restricted to services and community events. deep spiritual insight, instruction, advice, theological training were generally restricted to monastic communities. I am also fascinated that young men as a lay person could join a monastic community without vows and then leave at will. I am tempted to find books on history of Russian church. Books I’ve looked at apprear to be brief outlines or very complex😬.

What a wonderful journey. When I visited Russia, I toured a monastery about 1 hour from N. Tagil. It had been made into apartments during the Soviet era. It was just beginning to be reopened. The bells were recast and had not been hung yet. I felt totally honored to be seeing the monastery. This was in 2000. Thank you for sharing your country with us.

Маринка Николаева I am not sure. The whole town was a destination for orthodox Christians. I remember many churches, even one totally dedicated to Mary. I was there so early in the change over from Soviet russia that the icons were whitewashed over and the floors were barely scratched. I believe that the monastery was built in 1917. I love my memories of my trip to Russia. I miss my friends there.

Thank you so much. St. Sergius has helped our family so much by his prayers and we hope to go venerate his relics someday! May you be blessed for this service to so many people!

Valeria and Alex, thank you for your generosity of braving the cold and film this for us. While I am not a religious person, I see this monastery as a great place of beauty and historical importance and am glad it was restored. The architecture is stunning! Such beautiful buildings and colors. There is a lot of that in Russia everywhere, all through places in the country. I am constantly amazed. I'm surprised your camera functioned in those temperatures! Now try to stay warm and well.

Just to remind Americans, paintings, icons, artwork, statues (in Roman churches) are basically teaching methods, tools. Most folks were not literate until late around 1890’s +.

thanks for this series of your visit.. I'm interested in the history of the roman period here in my own country and I heard of.saint.Sergius and bacchus the two officers in the roman army who angered Emperor Maxiaim for refusing to make sacrifices to the god Jupiter..as they was both Christian and was martyred as a result...but I wasn't aware of St Sergius of Radonezh until I watched your videos so its something new ive learned and really nice to find out about... your videos are a joy to watch

For the first time it is better to travel along the Golden ring of the Northern ancient Russian cities in late spring and early summer. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XX_m9gnySeA.html it is Especially convenient to have a Volga cruise. Because if larger cities such as Yaroslavl or Kostroma attract the attention of Christmas and new year decoration ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZPyivtIYlwY.html the smaller towns are particularly charming in the spring green decoration. For example, a favorite city of artist Levitan Plyos ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vcKvJ-rBO3Io.htmlr the miracle city of Gorokhovets ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UMG4KMwdbDk.html

It was interesting to see the colour of the icons. Here in the UK our local church has a very faded mural dated to the 14th century but you cannot read anything. The church itself is mainly white plaster now. Back in the day it would have been more colourful even if built originally by Saxons!
