Information for foreigners: this is a tradition exercised by one minority group in Cambodia (less than 1% of total population). The general population doesn’t have any idea what this is unless one learned about it in school or from documentary like this one.

This is the Kreung tribe, which is a highly endangered group in the Eastern reaches of Cambodia. These sexual practices led to a lot of tensions with mainstream Cambodian society. Many Cambodians would look down on them. Worse, visiting men from outside their culture would hear about this tribe's customs and show up to huts expecting free sex. This led to some cases of r*pe and violence.
This is empowering and loving for parents towards their children. There is safety as it's near enough parents and a show of trust in the process by their family.

Interesting tradition to say the least. But why isn't any punitive consequences for the young man who refused to marry the girl after impregnated her? That does not seem to be fair for God's sake!
What an interesting way to get to know someone before marriage. Seems very refreshing that the woman is being empowered. I think this idea can help with arrange marriages. However, I don’t like the idea that if the girl falls pregnant the parents must pay a fine & find another man for her straight after. That seems a bit hypocritical to the “love hut” idea. Hmmmm, very interesting ethnic traditions. Never heard of this before, so thank you for educating us.
The idea of private space within the eyes of the parents is not bad tbh. Kids of all cultures will be kids. Love birds will find a way to do their businesses regardless if it's behind a bush or behind a closed door in the dark of the nights. Lol
This happened in my highland place in PI and it is traditional the difference was there was a love hut for girls and women that men could go that I heard but with missionaries from Belguim it was abolished. I think once upon a time my ancestors were from the highlandsn of their place that immigrated by boats to my present country.

Countries all over the world let people get married at 14 - 17. While I agree that's too young, you're so use to your own country marriage law that you see any other way as wrong.
Because this is a Khmer tradition. This a small ethnicity called Kroeung. Khmer tradition is very strict with girls … not allowed to have sex before marriage.
Agreed! This tribe lets kids as young as 8 have s*x. Its only a problem because we have a stigma in the west. Imagine if we just stopped being so closed minded.
