Narrated by Robert Webb, for the first time in its 70-year history, one of Britain's biggest pet food factories opens its doors, and from raw ingredients to the finished product, it's a mind-blowing journey into a 24/7 operation where the latest pet products are researched, developed, and manufactured. Join the staff of more than 1,000 animals and 250 humans -including top trainers, scientists, and nutritionists-as they measure meat chunks by the millimeter and even taste the latest recipes themselves. It's all in a day's work. And you thought this was going to be from the dark side. Nope. Happy animals, happy pets, happy people 😀
This is not a happy story about how the food is produced in the factory This is Exactly why our pets have more health issue and chronic disease than ever same ones humans are having due to Ultra processed pet food products void of any real nutrition. The fact that no ones rceorded inside a pet food factory in over 70 years says alot about the lack of regulation and complete corruption in the pet food industry.
I'd worry more about the toxic flea and tick poisons applied and dosed to animals, the too frequent vaccinations, the toxic carcinogenic chemicals in wall to wall carpeting, upholstered furniture foam cushions, laminated flooring etc they are exposed to every hour of every day- fluoride and clorine added to drinking water by cities, if you can SMELL the things coming out of these products it's the chemicals outgassing. @@Plumarin
After 8 years of eating that food straight, their 8 year old cats have absolutely no teeth!! My 10 year old cat has ALL of his teeth, this is saying something about this brand of cat food! Don't feed it to your cats! They won't have teeth! I wouldn't say pets without teeth are Happy!
The research they showed regarding the gum disease, is actually for mouth cancer some cats get for eating Fiskers dry kibble. Yet they make it seem like they'r doing us a favor for their research in "gum disease".
@@LHLK-q2vthe fact that u assume all pets are the same is hilarious. Did you know animals have different long colon, because they ear different things. Keep feeding ur cats whiskers...
@@MoonwolfAkirooo Your assumption that I assume all pets are the same is hillarious, I never said that. I know a lot about pets that you obviously do not.
Actually, BOTH are Ultra Processed foods. And studies have shown increased cancer risks in Humans and Animals who consume Ultra Processed food. I'm sure the U.S is worse though, and is probably laden with additional chemicals and pesticides not fit for Human or Animal consumption.😅🫡 But, cheers mates!👍
You are sweet, but you really cannot trust the cherry-picked science of companies like Mars and Nestle....they run the junk food for human animals and all other animals, including the supposedly 'scientific diets' sold by veterinarians. It is just like the pharmaceutical industry where they sponsor the 'baby vets / surgeons' education and brainwash them with their junk science and scholarships while they are at it. Also, the vets can earn large commissions selling their super expensive, yet unhealthy Hill's style products. I believed my vet until I ended up with vet bills in the high thousands for cancer treatments, plus expensive food that ended up killing one of my beloved cats from hideously painful renal failure after he had recovered from all of the radiation therapy that I put him through under specialist 'vet's care.' Velcro de Fang was an incredibly smart and handsome black and white cat who knew how to do all types of tricks including sit, 'meerkat' because cats don't beg, he would shake paws and my flat mate taught him how to do a high five! Velcra de Fang, my avatar name is in his honour and I will always do whatever I can to try to warn pet owners about the dangers of mass-produced pet food brands.
Pets are sometimes better company than people. These pets deserve the best of care and it's so refreshing to see the care put in here. ❤ Some people aught to check their own diets so well. It just might have an effect on moods when feeling better.
There is! Check out the brand Mouser. The company behind it aims to utilize an animal's natural prey in the food they make, and in this case they use the ingredient "whole mouse."
if their products are so high quality, why don't they mention on the packaging what exactly goes in, instead of just meat and vegetables? why don't they mention the exact preservatives they add?
I absolutely loved this documentary on how pet food is made and developed in Europe with such high standards-to bad I can’t say the same for over here in the USA that is full of byproducts unknown meats,it’s no wander our pets are dying young,I lost three cats to bad cat food and two dogs for the same reason
@MARTIELIZABETHSTOUFFER832 You apparently missed the part where the entire video is about a US-based Dog Food Company. And you having 5 dead pets seems to be more about you probably not needing own any pets as opposed to any one company being the problem. In large part because I'm betting that your 3 cats+2 dogs DID NOT all die on the same day at the same time at the same age and eating the same exact food. So maybe after the first pet died (or before as I also assume said pet was getting sick prior to the first death) you should have questioned many things.instead of blaming "america" after the fact.
@@uberfuYou apparently didn’t watch the doc because it’s about a UK based factory and the standards re meat and ingredients are better than what’s permitted in the US. This not only applies to pet food but humans as well.
Most dogs and cats do pretty well on meat products straight from the butcher. I just don’t understand why someone would want to feed their pet processed food while making these massive corporations tons of money
no they don't they are not carnivores they are omnivores. These corporations have a better balanced food than most people are informed enough to provide at home
My cat would adore being a food tester as his career 😂 As long as food came regularly, he wouldn’t care about cuddles or toys…just feed him and he’s in heaven.
I'm sure these workers are good intentioned, its funny how they skip over the corn, wheat, soy, legumes and other ingredients that dogs and cats don't need, especially with all the glyphosate they contain😢
@@LHLK-q2vI think you need to get educated …..cats are carnivores and dogs mainly thrive on a meat diet that’s facts ….it’s so obvious your on the companies payroll with so many comments being a fluffer for mars.
Kidney disease is the result of drinking less water and excessive medicines. Try herbal or home remedies as far as possible and ensure your pet is drinking clean water continuously. The water bowl is often covered with dust and fur and pets avoid drinking water because of this. I wash and clean the water bowls daily, and keep an eye on whether they're drinking enough water or not. If not, I force-feed them water with a syringe.
Nothing compares to the real food that you cooked or not and give to your pets. Keep in mind, we as pets are what we eat. Think about what you and your pets eat in tems of macro and micro nutrition.
I remember seeing thousands of unknown coarse animal hairs pedigree kibbles years ago. I mean in EVERY SINGLE kibble, and since then; I cook my kiddos food.
I wonder if the staff here would be any bit amused if a trucker with a load of coco powder came here simply because he saw MARS and was like cool! I know where that's at, instead of delivering it to the candy factory!
Smh, after 8 years of only eating that food, cats already have ALL of their teeth gone!! My cat is 10 years old, he still has every one of his teeth! This is saying something about whisky's cat food if their 8 year old cats have no teeth!!
Yeah, this is Britain not the United States. We may or may not do things differently here. I don’t know I haven’t researched either one of these places till this was brought up which is exactly what I’m gonna do when I’m done watching this to see if they’re comparable or the same
Canada and Great Britain have far stricter standards than the US in just about every food-related industry; here in the US the food industry lobbiests are either former FDA civilians, or will be hired into high-ranking FDA positions from the industry. As a result, almost anything can make into pet food these days. If you care about the health and longevity of your companion animal, please take a few minutes to make them a meal alongside your own.
i cannot believe how the world is going mad about pet's food. historically, pets were there to eat our leftover so that we humans won't be wasting foods which is a curse and has bad karma! and with so many billions of people going hungry nowadays, doing this, is a great insult to human life to be honest...
Grain is not bad for dogs. But it should not be the number one ingredient or the majority of the food. It’s just cheap is why a lot of dog food over uses grains.
Ohh by no way would I eat Pedigree dog food. Maybe it’s better in Great Britain however I would definitely NOT do it in the US at all. Just yuck!!! Dog food stinks.
Please please people, look up the ingredients. Pet food shouldn't contain grains and vegetables. Or a least below 20%. And also not be burned in the proces. Also no any chemicals. Better feed biological and ecological meat. Make your own petfood.
19:06 "Color is really something the customers like to see" I don't know mate, I'd rather not have my pet's food go in looking the same as it comes out
This looks all fine and dandy but the whiskas here in Canada is 75% grease. It’s vey fat, one day I picked a piece of the floor that dropped and I had to use a lot of Dawn to get all that fat off my fingers. It is not high quality like they show here.
watched it and checked which brands they actually are and they are all bad ingredient brands, the only one I would let my dog eat would maybe be crave and thats borderline... please always check the ingredient list, good pet food starts at 70% fresh meat - none of their brands has that...
If you’re buying a dry food, the first ingredient should be a meat meal VS straight meat. It means it’s the dry weight not wet weight. A lot of companies fool you by saying fresh chicken which is mostly water but sounds better than chicken by product meal. The by product meal is a much better and more expensive ingredient. By product just means not straight muscle meat so it includes organs etc… The pet food industry is tricky.
Not sure how long ago this video was produced but it feels like really jarring and old. Good documentary would show how thing are made, not this happy music and b-roll of cats and dogs 60% of the time. There are plethora of good factory tours available to copy the proper style.
@@SanaKhan-pf7ydThey extrude this in very high heat four times, so all the vitamins and nutrients are depleted ,then they add synthetic vitamins to that… Feeding that to kittens, and cats is going to dehydrate them ,because it’s pulling all the moisture from their body… You would have to add six times more water or broth in order for it to balance out… It’s a terrible food overall. Good wet food would be: Tiki or Veruva for them.
Yummy.... I thought! 30 minutes into this video, I realised this is not exotic food for humans, but their 4 legged friends😕 Now, I must stop drinking whiskey🫤
Watch the documentary Pet Fooled, and you'll know what's up. I used to feed my dog pet food, and he's vomit once every two months for no reason. Then I stopped giving pet food and those chew toys, and gave human food. Now he's 18 years old, and still spry and sprightly
I hope you mean human-grade, not just human food. Also, there’s lots of truth in the Pet Fooled, but also a good deal of misinformation. Yeah this doc here is funny. They put so much grains to feed cats, it’s just nonsense that someone would feel like it ok
Well Pet Fooled is mainly about the pet food industry in the US, this one is about Europe so that health standards are quite different and while Europe isn't perfect nor do I believe this documentary here was completely unbiased and not mostly a giant commercial for Mars pet food products, it's still leagues above what you get in the US.
@@free4fire What animals (carnivores) NEED is real meat...raw. No "additives". All the raw food dogs I know of live to be 16-18. You cannot fool nature
@ire Whiskas is an American brand, but as you can see in this doc, it's also made in the UK. Pet food is not human grade; they are allowed to use euthanized animal products in pet food. Do your research and you will see this is the unfortunate reality.
@@free4fire Most industries owned and controlled by a handful of cos. Until you know for sure you can’t be sure. Check with a vet about home made with normal human food for your pet.
95% of pet food brands are owned by 6 companies. Mars is the leader and owns 41 brands, including Royal Canin. Don't believe this company is as benevolent as they make out to be. They are a multi-billion dollar industry and it's money that drives this company not the well being of animals. They have recently introduced new prescription food formulas that are making cats and dogs sick. I'm told many additional changes are coming this spring and summer (2024). Keep a close eye on your pets if you buy the Royal Canin veterinary prescription food. If your cat or dog is sickened, have your vet report it to the Royal Canin Rep and leave a review on their website. Maybe if enough people speak up they'll listen.
No, they will never listen, because they simply do not care. It's part of the MARS food conspiracy. THEY KNOW they are making us sick. It's not just our Animals, it's US Humans too! Tell me why some of these companies are also sponsored by major Health Industries, ?? Still don't believe it's a conspiracy ?? Susan G Comen. The Breast Cancer Association 🎀 recommended dairy products as "healthy" for women under their "Dietary website" yet new studies have linked dairy products with a 70% increased breast cancer risk for women! The world we live in is VERY EVIL, it's VERY CONTROLLED, and it's VERY MANIPULATED.
Not impressed. I feed my Pomeranians freeze dried raw protein dog food and supplement with fresh vegetables and fruits. The cooking destroys the vitamins in the dog and cat food.
I noticed my dogs get chubby and sick when I feed dog treats I bought online or the pet store. So I try to feed as little as possible. Be careful of the dog treats. It makes your dog sick.
08:10 Quick - nobody tell Mars/Wiskas that the average cat lifespan is 15 years (12-20). Seems more like a problem if their test cats are only making it to 11 years old.
I think they meant survival, "back in the day" before we industrialized food and medicine. (like an average humans lives longer today than 200 years ago)
This is a far cry from the pet food industry here in the US. Commercial pet food here, except for the ultra high end, will basically cut your pet's lifespan in half.
If only....I'd like to see the nutritional statements on the back of their products. BTW, you can barely buy any Mars Pedigree or cat items other than the cat milk HERE in the US. USA puts in by-products. I don't think you'd be forking them to your mouth. I'll continue to buy roast beef/turkey/salmon for my pet dog. If I can't eat it, I'm not feeding it to them. Nothing canned or pouched.
My latest dog 4 year old fox terrier has never been fed that pet fast food garbage. If it has a long shelf life what does that tell you. I wonder why it causes plaque and tarter and requires a tooth brush. My dog eats a raw animal food based diet and i have never had to brush his teeth in 4 years.
@@NothenButHellI'm sorry to hear that, my condoleances for your furry baby . And yes, I feed my cats mainly raw meats , chicken and beef and wish them an egg a day with some sourcream mixed in timetimes or milk . Haven't had any issues with them in 5 years now
My last cat passed at 17. He had many health issues. Otherwise, I believe he would have lived longer. My current cat is 16 and thriving. I feed a wide variety of fresh raw meats exclusively. No commercially made foods ever.
I used to work on a beef farm. Dont let them fool you into thinking they are all about quality. I have personally seen the state of rotted bloated carcass the dog food truck collects from the poop pile 🤮🤮🤮
@@Just_Lurking8 that is a lie, there are regulations as to the disposal of used oil and it does not include pet food, get informed and stop looking like a fool
Thank you for showing us your process and factory. It is exactly what I wanted to see. Very clean and sanitary. Please sell your food in the Colonies( U.S.A.). The cat food we get sold here mainly consists of rice, grain, beer and corn byproducts made from the processing of human food and should not be in the diet of an animal that is an obligate carnivore.
Its the same here in Europe. Don't be fooled by this 'documentary'. Go check the ingredients in the European products yourself. Its also mostly grain and byproducts from other industries.
It's also the same poor nutrition and ingredients from Mars and subsidiaries. Look at higher-quality food products: Weruva, Stella and Chewy's, Instinct, and Wellness for example, Even store brands like Authority (PetSmart) and Whole Hearted (Petco) are better than mainstream products (Iams, Fancy Feast, Whiskas, Meow Mix, Puppy/Kitten Chow).
@@greg1894 When we were living on a really tight budget between jobs, we had to switch from Fromm to Authority and our cats did pretty well on it. Versus them hunger-striking rather than eat Friskies "Grain-Free" which made me laugh. They were so adamant against eating it no matter how I doctored it I ended up throwing the bag out.
Naturally, Im sure they did their best to make themselves look good, as we all do. But I clicked this video completely expecting to end it feeling guitly about not preparing my cats food myself from raw ingredients (something I would love to do that simply isnt possible right now) but was pleasantly surprised with the opposite. Rather the video was a fluff peice for the company or not, it worked in making me more comfortable picking these guys.
My golden rule with pet food, is don’t buy any brands that are sold in supermarkets. You pay for what you get, high end expensive pet store only brands are superior over any supermarket brand and are fine to feed to your pets. The pet food industry is very competitive these days, resulting in far better foods than the past. Many are using human grade meat, adding natural ingredients and producing much better quality food. They even have additives now, that make your home cooked pet food, nutritionally balanced, which was always the problem with home cooked pet food, getting everything they need in it, was very challenging and involved an incredible amount of research if you wanted it completely balanced. Pet owners have forced the industry to do better, no matter what the cost, because many pet owners will pay for the very best for their fur kids. I have been a vet tech over 30 years, and have seen how pet food has changed drastically over the years for the better.
@@LHLK-q2v I don’t buy pet food at a supermarket because it’s extremely poor quality. I have been in the veterinary industry over 30 years, so I can assure you, I’m very well informed.
This. Just walking into a boutique pet store and picking anything _at random_ will get you a better food than anything you find at a grocery store or large chain pet store, IMHO. And if in doubt, check label for % of protein, fat, and KCAL - if the percentage of protein is low and the fat is high, and the KCAL is also suspiciously high... it's *loaded* with oil and grains. Maybe alright for dogs, but no-go for cats. If it has no KCAL label _at all_ don't even waste your time.
I never ever a going to accept, that people giving dry food to their pets, as they do not stand the smell as the only reason. Better: Always feed wet food to your beloved pet!
