@@lovetownsend Have to admit, pretty interesting how you can now fill up your board w/ fantastic monsters and place a time-bomb or two on your opponent's side on turn 1.
@@Nersius yeah but idk, to me it seems less strategy based and more play whatever is meta and you win theres no big brain plays spanning multiple turns its just whoever wins the coin flip and can flood their board with removal and negates first wins
Magic player here, the tournament bingo seems like so much fun. I’m sure we share a lot on that sheet, my kin in cardboard -adjacent same matchup -opponent complains about bricking -Getting the bye -Fail a deck check The list goes on!
Wait so she is implying 25k is a lot? If you play the champsions of Call of Duty, Counter Strike, Dota, League of Legends, you gets hunderds of thousands of dollars, if not $1M (for the team,). Even Age of Empires, or Tekken, or Street Fighter will pay you more. The media is completely blind to what eSPorts and other games represent nowadays
this video was really nice. The whole story had this low stakes mild rewards and high tension that TCG regionals are known for. Sad the we never knew how the bingo sheet ended up.
That is exactly the opposite of what the Pokemon community is. If you aren't a part of the in group you get stepped over, cheated against, and overruled by nepotistic tournament organizers
Nah it was the same boring shit of "omg a card game awards that much money???" LIke, CCG's are over 30 years old at this point how do you not realize this
This is so cool to see! I used to play competitive Pokémon tcg back from 2012-2015, travelled all over the southeast USA for tournaments and even placed top 100 at the 2014 USA national tournament! I don’t keep up with the game anymore but I’m glad to see it’s still growing!
Hey really liked this, it's nice to see behind the scenes. Haha the community is awesome, so welcoming. Haha I only got into this because of my little one and it is so addictive and loved the strategy behind it and all the different combos you can pull off.
My kid got into cards because other kids at school were trading and I got a set so we could play together. It’s even more fun than I remember from a quarter century ago, playing with my kid!
@@samuelmartin865 nice, it's such a good thing to bond over haha although it has turned into an obsession of ours now and we talk about it a lot. We are going to our first tournament this weekend she is playing chien Pao and I'm playing urshifu.
Rewarding in terms of the emotional feeling of success, but in terms of prize money (25k) it's one of the lowest in any competition of that scale, especially in regards how profitable the game is, however it's great that you get your travel expenses covered if you qualify to worls, which can cost $1-2k if it's at Japan, so everyone receive something which is great.
Long time TCG player, been playing magic, yugioh and pokemon for a long time and love that pokemon TCG is such an easy card game to pick up compared to others but also very very competitive as well! In my experience the pokemontcg communities anywhere you go is usually the friendliest!
If someone wants to learn how to play there is an official app where you collect decks and each pack comes with a code for it. Once someone learns the rules a bit and builds a deck locals are very friendly from the ones I’ve been to.
Competitive TCG's are essentially a complicated form of Logistics. You need to find a way to get the exact cards you want from you deck into your hand under the best and most consistent circumstances possible. Those circumstances could relate to the card game directly, like needing the right cards to answer your opponents cards at the right time, or not so directly, like managing the time you spend between rounds to use the bathroom or remembering to bring a snack if there is no lunch break during a tournament.
Never got into the competitive side of Pokémon TCG but I absolutely love collecting. The competitive side has always worried me that I’ll look at cards differently from being these little collector pieces of art to what they truly are (disposable cardboard meant to be used lol)
@@hexiy_dev people collected stamps, wines, cars, watches, spoons, plates and god knows what for ages. Stuff is meant to be enjoyed*, whether that means playing it or collecting it (and you're not the one to decide which one others should do lol).
@@TheAshtarr There's a leaderboard of everyone with points, and we're at the end of the season now - globally there are currently 6725 Masters, 968 Seniors, 1255 Juniors
Truly sad! This is a kids game, dominated by adults who can't grow up. And the target audience, has just one small table somewhere in the corner. Just wow.
@@trolojolo6178it’s funny how they act like this is a big event worth international attention lol. This is literally a kid’s game being played by adults yet they market it like it’s a big deal when it isn’t 😂
@@loremaster77 like... soccer/football is a childs game but grown people make a living out of it. EVERY game could be downgraded to "it's a childs game why do you play it" though even the "kids" you see at these tournaments especially the higher tier ones would mop the floor with you even if you use a competitive deck.
Please continue making competitive TCG content! The scene (especially MTG) is very fun and inclusive and full of some VERY interesting people! This video was very well made, I love the idea of talking to a single player before and after the tournament and following them through the circuit. Also the host for this one is adorable! Hopefully she learns the game soon and has fun doing it.
25,000 is nothing for the pokemon company. Metazoo, a competing card game, has 1st place prizes of 50,000 every month and a 1.2 million dollar prize pool for their upcoming world championship.
Just wondering, as there are so many different sets out there and new cards always coming out. What particular card set are they playing with? Or can you use any cards from all the years since release?
The sets legal for standard play are based on a rotation schedule set by Pokemon, currently legal cards are any with the regulation mark "E" and on in the bottom left of the card!
Even losing, getting to Top 8 out of 200 players is a huge result, this shows that even being a "luck" based game, if you have the skill, you can have a good result no matter the odds
oh man now I want to see you do this with Flesh and Blood and Mr. Michael Hamilton, the humblest and current Us National and reigning World championship.. think this is in my mindset because worlds was just announced today for 2023 in Barcelona!
MTG rank 1 , Yugioh Rank 2 and Pokemon Rank 3 imo I played all 3 tearlaments is my fav yugioh deck , and mono green or selesnya , and pokemon calyrex ice rider with pilka
A little weird seeing an outside perspective. Been playing the game for well over a decade now. A little late to the game but damn is it fun. Sadly there are only a handful of ways to play without the physical cards. They recently shut down the best online version of the card game in favor of a broke mess.
pokemon players, there is a pokemon game on warcraft 3 The Frozen Throne. its a custom made game from the warcraft 3 map editor. the game is called Pumpkin TD. its a tower defense game that uses pokemon for the towers. i have been playing it for years, its very addicting. im just now realizing that the Pumpkin TD game is heavily based on this pokemon card game. its partially luck based and you play against other people. go try it!
The worst part about day 2 is trying to get sleep. I usually had to bring over the counter sleeping pills to force my brain to go to bed for a huge day 2.
@@Cat-zc8njidk anything about Henry so not saying he does this but generally players are responsible for keeping the board state clean even if your opponent is making the mistake. Letting your opponent make a game state breaking mistake and not stopping it intentionally before it gets there then calling a judge for penalties is rule sharking and technically illegal but impossible to really prove/punish
I dont know much about price pools for TCGs but 25k seems a bit low. I mean you have to buy the cards and probably several decks over the year, then you have to pay travel costs most likely, because I Pokemon TCG has a point system for Qualifying right? So I think if you win the 25k you probably just made the money back you already spent, or am I wrong? Kinda insane to me, if you consider that pokemon is the biggest videogame brand in the world and even "smaller" esport games for example have way bigger price pools, even tho they make way less money than pokemon company is
25k is high for tcgs, usually they arent that much and they have a spread of prizes of thousands for the top 32-64 sometimes at like worlds up to like 500k in value. Still think it should be more but considering tcg like yugioh does nothing its still pretty good but you never play to make money really anyways
I'm 35 years old... I think as a child I held every card. fuck sakes I was too young to retain any halo... Then I hit high school, and kept my entire halo Yugioh deck lol.. I have yet to sell it... lol maybe soon...
I used to play competitively a few years ago. I began to grow disillusioned about having to buy new cards every year just to make sure your deck was in good standing with the rules. But wouldn't change anything about my experience otherwise.
theres a 50 minute time limit in pokemon tournaments, best of 3 set. so if u win game 1 lose game 2 and then time out its a tie. this doesnt happen in day 2 where there is a sudden death but for day 1 noobs it happens super often.
