Watching this after watching the Magnificent Century hits different, *they really made most of the scenes here in the real palace!*

@@IstanbulTheQueenofCities Yes most of the scenes were in other buildings but the room of the mother of the sultan in the series is an exact copy of the ceremony hall in this video, such as the Sultan's room, and many hallways in the Harem too. So I suppose they did acted in some of the real places

What a great upload - this is a real gem of a find for me. Wonderful video with a lovely soundtrack 😊 Some years back I had the pleasure of visiting both Topkapi and Dolmebache Palaces, and whilst both palaces are stunning, the harems in both palaces had a certain vibe that for me at least - gave them a heavy, and rather gloomy atmosphere. I think its hard for the modern mind to get a real feel for what life must have been like for the inhabitants of these institutions... from the women themselves, to the eunachs and halberdiers that minded them, and not least the Sultan and his immediate family themselves. A facinating - if somewhat grim - period in history. Thanks again for this lovely video tour 😊

The Hagia Sofia unfortunately which was beautiful inside before the artwork was ruined when it got defaced as it was built as a Christian Cathedral when it was Constantinople so it obviously had biblical scenes on the walls. This is a good video. The harem is a really beautiful place. But only very few had a great life here. Those few lucky who managed to became valide sultanas. The others ..... As the sultans changed so changed the concubines. Read somewhere that in most of the cases the concubines were moved to make place for the concubines of the new sultan. But was cases when the concubines were throw in Bosporus. Also cases when only the pregnant ones ended in Bosporus. Very many tragic stories around this place.

Beautiful video, but we didn't get to see any bedrooms. Why did the Ottoman Empire only select black boys or men, to become eunuchs?
@IstanbulTheQueenofCities
@IstanbulTheQueenofCities Год назад
Thank you very much. The first sultans stayed in the special room next to the Sacred Relics. Sultan Murad III let built a new privy room for hisself. Then the other sultans had their own rooms built. Cushions and mattresses were lined up during the day. At night, the cushions were lifted and the bed was laid. The Ottomans did not have a fixed bed like today. They were occasionally together with their spouses. * * * The eunuchs were serving in the Harem and Enderum in Topkapi Palace. Black eunuchs in Harem, white eunuchs in enderun. My guess: Men were not allowed in the Harem. Only black eunuchs could enter. In this way, it was also prevented for a man to enter by hiding in women's clothing.

I heard when they castrate men, they get really afraid and their testies shrunk in a very small size. Castration was done by 2 ways, one was crushing the testies. Because the testicles have shrunken into very small size during castration, sometimes they get healed over time. There were many incidents that concubines and eunuchs were having relationships with each other in the past, having black eunuchs would make it obvious that the baby would be half black. So that’s why they started having black eunuchs i think.

Hello Teresa, most Eunuch are black to determine the faithfulness of the concubines. so that in the event that any concubine will get pregnant, if the child will have a color then it proves that they are unfairhful

Are there any existing harems in today's age?
@IstanbulTheQueenofCities
@IstanbulTheQueenofCities Год назад
In fact, harem is already a practice contrary to the Quran. Nowadays, it can be considered as the fact that some men in the Eastern region of Turkey are married to more than one woman. But I have neither heard of nor know that there was a Harem as it was in ancient times.

"Harem" means Forbidden ❓️
@IstanbulTheQueenofCities
@IstanbulTheQueenofCities Год назад
The origin of the word harem is haramu(m) and comes from Akkadian and means “to cover, hide, withhold from others. In Arabic it has the meaning of separating, isolating, means "protected, sacred and venerable thing or place."

@@IstanbulTheQueenofCities i think that Islam allow to a man to have 4 woman's if can afford this .... But the common practice today ( especially in turkey ) is one woman .... My thoughts is modern turkey has a lot of greek dna .. 1. Many greek girls' in ottoman period forced to go to harem's 2.Many boys from Greece force to go to genisares... 3.And many Greek people especially in Anatolia force to change their religion to save there lives... So its not surprise to see videos that turkish people do dna test and the result is that have greek dna... The opposite is not common...for reasons that can explain to you if you asking to do ..

I don't agree with the narrative built into this video, as some of the information is misinterpreted. For Example, Sculpture and living creature paintings ARE PROHIBITED by Quran. Ottomans took inspiration from the Quran and added them as part of their tradition, and they were quite strict about them. Still, some violations were made by a few Sultans.

Well they didn't really apply the Islamic rules to sultans and princes unless they wanted to. They had their own portraits, did zinah with slaves, became monarchs (monarchy is not Islamic system), also practised fratricide law for about one and a half century. So they weren't really strict about Islam but more strict about traditions and cultural practices.

@@alysehabib8344 Slavery, concubinage, eunuchs and monarchy is not Islamic. This was their culture. Islam said to free and marry slaves with their consent, not to do zinah with them (concubinage) neither castrate them (eunuchs). These are inhumane practices.
