In this episode we leave the museums far behind and venture to the home of a private collector Mr. Warwick Bolton to visit his pride and joy - The AMX 13.
A French Light Tank that was exported to over twenty-five other nations and was in Service all the way up to 1985.
So join us for this two part special looking at the oddity with the oscillating turret.

8 years ago, when I went through Ft Knox, there were a couple of these rusting away to nothing in a yard with other tanks hulls. We used to pass them on the way to the range. It was only until the French line was added to WoT that I knew what they were.

Search up AMX-13 SM1 (Singapore Modified) version. They were upgraded with new Detroit engines as featured in the game and had modern communications, a laser rangefinder, etc. Later on Singapore made the first-ever 75mm APFSDS-T round for it, capable of penetrating MBTs of the 90s. This was a classified capability until the tank stood down in mid 2000s. Our replacement was the Leopard 2SG. (Leopard 2A4 upgraded with Singapore's own communications/datalink system and add-on armour).

I love this cute little tank! In Freiburg we had a rather large garrison of the French Army and the HQs of the FFA (forces françaises en Allemagne) made its own 14th of July parade---to save the German main street the Frenchmen only used very light vehicles like the AMX 13 and the EBR-75 scout car. Today the French armed forces are gone and their HQ buildings belong to Freiburg's university. It's a pity, cause we liked the French soldiers very much. They were very polite and always ready to help . . .

What a great jog you have done! I am a former Tank Platoon Leader serving on AMX 13-90 during the late 70s in Verdun, France. It looks as nice as can be. Your report is absolutely accurate. The owner's personal paint job is very American/ cartoonish and would fit a flying fortress far better. All the rest looks exactly like my old "Reims" (name of my tank). My radio code was Yankee Mike. Unfortunately I am a six footer and trying to drive the tank was quite painful. Anything else went quite well. Yep, servicing the engine at level 2 ( important repairs) was... very tough, but not for those who ran the beast.

It must be said that the AMX-13's FL-11 oscillating turret was inspired by the oscillating turret of the Panhard type 201 wheeled reconnaissance vehicle from 1939.
@cherylchan753

Oscillating turret was the only design that could accommodate the drum magazines. They protrude so far back that by raising the gun above the fixed portion of the turret, they could get some decent elevation on the gun.

Kudos to Mr. Bolton for that restoration job! I was a tank mechanic in the Singapore Army in the late 1990s. The tanks we used then were upgraded with a V6 Detroit Diesel turbocharged engine, new electricals, a hydro-pneumatic suspension and new range finding and targeting equipment, although the 75mm gun stayed the same. They were all retired in 2007 when we bought a lot of Leopard 2A4s from Germany.

I heard my father mention something, my grandfather noted when servicing the dutch AMX 13's. It was that the 105 mm the dutch had fitted to the AMX 13 would crack the turret after firing a given number of rounds. Wich had to be fixed numerous times. After the dutch sold their AMX 13's to I think Israel, They removed the 105 mm and fitted either the 75 or the 90 mm and used them extensively without problems.

I'm an Air Force brat, and I went to high school at Zweibrucken AB Germany 84-87, and there were about a half dozen of these there. They used them as decoys on the base. One afternoon after a AFJROTC field trip we had a picknick while waiting for school to end. The tanks were parked in a group near where we were, so we naturally climbed into them and checked them out (played in them). We turned and elevated the turrets. I was able to figure out on my own how the auto loader worked, and I'm not mechanically minded. I fell in live with this little French tank that day.

No one ever mentions that the "autoloader" is not robotic/motor driven. Each shell in the 2 drums has to be hand cranked by either the commander or gunner, into the breech. After firing, the shell case has to be manually ejected using a lever.

***** No, they could reload from inside, it just took twice as long to maneuver the shells into the drum. This is why an automatically reloading gun from a drum is really impractical. But there are some modern SPG's which have mechanisms which pull shells from the ammo rack and load them, takes about 3 seconds and it can fire 4 shots and have them land in the same place at the same time. It just changes the arc for each shot, very cool shit.

The oscillating tower and the gun are built into one piece, meaning that the recoil of this high pressure cannon is absorbed by the whole tower. That's why an even heavier 90 mm., barrel could be used not to speak of the eventual 105 mm., piece.
