Inside the US Military’s Five Tier One Operators
“We are experts in the application of violence we possess the mindset and “will” to do what is necessary we are tier one” That was the dialog spoken in the first real trailer for the reboot of the Medal of Honor. And since then, the term Tier-1 has been associated with American Special Operations units like Delta Force, Seal Team Six and others which we ‘ll talk about later but first let it clear that Tier-1 is not a rating system, but a funding system, it just so happens that these units fall under the top level of funding.
In the US military, there are 5 “Tier 1” special operations forces that fall under the Joint Special Operations Command (J-Soc). The Tier One landscape is full of elite warriors, but the Intelligence Support Activity stands alone - the ultimate intel ghost in the whole command. This is a unit of about 300 members formed in 1981. Despite its modest name, ISA holds Tier-1 status. They are expert in gathering human and signal intelligence through field agent contacts and intercepting communications to support operations of Delta Force and Devgru. Its members frequently collaborate with the J-Soc. The 24th Special Tactics Squadron is the Air Force component of J-Soc, stationed at Pope Field, North Carolina. This unit serves as the Air Force's special operations ground force, providing airmen to J-Soc, including pararescue men, combat controllers, special reconnaissance, and Tactical Air Control Party personnel. Within this group, combat controllers are also certified FAA air traffic controllers. Their mission is to covertly deploy into combat and hostile environments to establish assault zones or airfields. Their motto "First There" reaffirms their commitment to undertake the most dangerous missions behind enemy lines by leading the way for other forces to follow. The unit was involved heavily in activities in Iraq and Afghanistan as part of J-Soc groups Task Force 121, Task Force 6-26 and Task Force 145. The Regimental Reconnaissance Company (RRC) is an elite unit within the 75th Ranger Regiment Special Troops Battalion. The RRC carries out special reconnaissance for the 75th Rangers and for J-Soc. When it was a detachment-sized unit, the RRC (formerly RRD) consisted of three 6-man teams and a headquarters element. RRC operatives are skilled in various military free-fall operations, including High Altitude Low Opening (HALO) and High-Altitude High Opening (HAHO). SEAL Team 6, formally known as the Naval Special Warfare Development Group, or Devgru, is a name that needs no introduction. They are responsible for off-the-grid, black ops directly under the command of J-Soc. They are not regular Seals, rather best of the best as they are selected from the existing pool of Navy Seals. While standard Seals units already demand a high level of physical fitness comparable to that of professional athletes. Among these is close-quarters battle (CQB). But let's explore: how does SEAL Team 6 operate to achieve their goals? Well, they've got a pretty slick setup. In total, there are six squadrons, each with its own unique role and expertise. Delta Force stands as the tip of the spear of the entire US military, a clandestine force whose existence is not officially unacknowledged by the US government. But they are known by a string of codenames (1st Operational Detachment-Delta, Combat Applications Group (CAG), Army Compartmented Elements (ACE). Delta Force consists of of A, B, C & D squadrons, complemented by a Combat Support Squadron, Signal Squadron, Aviation Platoon, and an intriguingly named "Funny Platoon" - the intelligence-gathering arm of Delta Force. The combat squadrons are composed of smaller units called troops, which specialize in airborne, ground or water insertion, much like the Green Berets. Ultimately, troops can split into small mission teams of up to 12 people and as few as one.

Great video brother. Very accurate. A few slight discrepancy’s. Actually the best MFF program in JSOC is the one run by RRC. And one other thing I noticed is you said Delta pulls from the green berets and can take from other units. Actually most guys in delta come from the Ranger Battalions and then the next largest pool comes from the green berets.

I would (highly) recommend the Team House Podcast with guest Adam Gamal. Adam is the 1st member of the ISA to write a book about his time serving in that organization as a SIGINT’er.. He Talks about tracking the cell phones of Al Qaeda all over North Africa and the Levant. In Iraq when the insurgency was raging, he went into the city undercover as part of a Egyptian Telecom Company that was putting in place a new GSM cell tower network. Adam and other ISA operatives basically used this cover to access some the Iraqi Internet cafes where the owners were wanting to get better and faster signals for their businesses. One of the Cafe owners happened to be a prominent Al Qaeda enabler and used his business as a hub for the foreign fighters to meet up and communicate with other cells in the country. Adam went inside the cafe, sat with him and had a normal, friendly conversation in Arabic, drank tea, and when the owner got preoccupied with some customers, Adam downloaded some “special software” on one of the cafe computers he was “pretending” to test. He later gave the owner a business card before he left, regrouping with some Delta Force operators not far from the bock he was on. It’s a bad ass listen.

Adressed to all special operations members: What do you do with the spent mags during Ops? When you get into slide lock reload during an op, do you let the mag drop on the floor like in training and leave it there and move on, or do you pick it up later. I assume you often dont wanna leave anything on the X that can telegraph the presence of coalition forces or even betray your direction of travel etc. How do you go about it? Do u put it in your dump pouch with a tac reload technique? Do you pick it up during SSE along with the casings, or do you just straight up use host nation weopons only if the mission requires that level of deniability? Further more, im curious what kind of items should really NOT be left on target and what kind of items aren't considered as sensitive? Please do not answer if this does not apply to you. Unless you have it on good authority that this is how they do it, do not answer for someone else. I just wanna know coz sometimes people make a big deal about it if certain things are left on target so much so that guys even take their excrements with them in plastic bags during recon ops but it seems unrealistic to be able/willing to collect everything like mags and shell casings after nightraids and stuff. If this is sensitive TTP i wont pry but if not i would very much enjoy reading about this.

That opening is an oft-repeated myth I kept hearing on Quora: "The tier system isn't a rating system, but a funding system." aka "the only difference is funding". If that were true, then the large majority of Tier-2 operators who try out for Tier-1 wouldn't fail. I've been over their training and selection with a fine-toothed comb and the fact is, Tier-1 have a far harder physical and mental selection process, with more skills learned in training and higher standards of speed & precision shooting. Just look over the ruck weight and distance travelled in Delta selection, it's far beyond SF or Rangers. Tier-2 are incredible, the elite, but Tier-1 are the very best picked out from the elite. There's this weird mentality that we have to pretend everybody is equal in order to be respectful.

0:57 I got introduced to ISA by a graphic novel called The Activity in 2012. It was a great series. It's an amazing unit. I read about the ISA in Mark Bowden’s book, “Killing Pablo”. I believe they operated under the cover of the name Centra Spike at the time. Complete studs in every sense of the word, but very hard to nail down any specific information (as it should be). And too the book Killer Elite: The Inside Story of America's Most Secret Special Operations Team by Michael Smith

More funding = more and better training = an aggregate of better operators, thus is a loose rating system. Plus an extra/independent selection process.
