Inside The Weird Dinosaur Park Where Confederates Defeat The Union Army (HBO)

NATURAL BRIDGE, Virginia - Dinosaur Kingdom II is a theme park where dinosaurs defeat the Union Army in a Civil War battle forgotten by history. It has a mock Ken Burns-style documentary and everything. Of the more than 1,700 monuments and markers for the Confederacy across the country, this is one of the strangest.
The sci-fi alt-history theme park was built in 2016 by Mark Cline - someone people in the south would call "a character." Admission is $10 and Cline says the park can bring in $10,000 on any happening summer weekend.
"The Yankee troops wanted to use these dinosaurs as weapons of mass destruction against the South. It kind of backfired on them," Cline told VICE News. "And this is the story that was left out of most of the history books. So I'm trying to bring the story to light to make sure that history is told the way it's supposed to be."
VICE News visited to ask the creator about why he built the park and why he wanted to see the South win.

rofl0bot you would think so, but then you hear the visitor at the end try to equate both sides as being wrong. Clearly some people see this a a gateway to redeeming the Confederacy, while ignoring all blatant evil they openly professed.

Sword of Tauberg The confederacy may have had its moral problems, but the union were not the saints they are painted out to be. The closest the United States has ever come to being a tyrannical country was under the union.
@GoingtoHecq
@GoingtoHecq 6 лет назад
It isn't at all a satire of southern revisionism. It would be obvious and sold as such. Instead when he calls it absurdist he's just trying to hide behind words while the park he has made betrays his beliefs. Also, he's trying to push the narrative that none of it can be taken for more than silly or ridiculous. He only talks about these things to deflect from giving an answer to a hard question. His behavior and actions do not show that this is meant to make southern revisionism seem absurd. It avoids the subject entirely by hiding behind a "history" that is impossible so that it can more freely depict his views and southern views towards racism.

I get the impression the owner just wanted to make a silly park. But he checked out the local demographics and went with a side and a struggle that would fit in with the local culture.

+Don't want to use your Google+ Name? Ok, we'll ask you again later: Thank you! And once again, the correct answer is "follow the money". His park needs to make money to survive. He tries to avoid all political commentary because he doesn't want to dissuade anyone from coming to his park. He needs to pay the rent and buy food just like everyone else.

Politics aside it’s sad people want to get rid of history like grave markers, statues. Just because people fought on different side shouldn’t justify historical destruction.

You can tell he didn't build the park because he actually believes the south won, though. If he had bigoted motives, he'd have a LOT more blatantly racist memorabilia in his park. He doesn't even fly a Confederate flag, because he KNOWS what the Confederacy and their symbols represent. At 3:11, she mentions how he doesn't want any part in the controversy, and then they use a clip of him saying 'That war had to happen...' and he even got a little frustrated with the guy who refused to admit the war was fought because of slavery. I don't know why it still feels like they're trying to make it out to be more than just a kooky art project when he's clearly on the right side of history. Like she said in the beginning. 'He's a character.' Nothing more. Just a character playing a part. And I dig it.

The Southerner saw the Northern industry and banks a lot like how the 99% see the 1% today. Slavery wasn't just a Southern issue. There were slave states that fought in the North. Lincoln didn't want to get rid of slavery over night when is was elected. The South was an agricultural economy and made its money on exporting cash crops. Business was so good that it gave the South equal footing against the North politically and economically. Slave labor was ingrained in that system (remember slavery was going on in the colonies well over a century before the US came around.) The issue of the time was how could that South keep it's equal footing with the North while getting rid of a corner stone (slave labor) of their economy. The South believe that the North wanted to get rid of Slavery (not for moral reasons) so they could economically control the South.

BlueBig22 very true it was pretty much about 💰 not slavery, Abraham Lincoln didn't signed the bill to free the slaves untill 2 years after the war started ??at 1861 Just one month after writing this letter, Lincoln issued his first Emancipation Proclamation, which announced that at the beginning of 1863, he would use his war powers to free all slaves in states still in rebellion (as they came under Union control) Also some rich blacks like the ones in South Carolina who owned slaves and plantations all for the 💰 😁😁😁

@Landrar

There was never a war fought to end slavery. While the South certainly was fighting to preserve it, despite Abraham Lincoln having no intention of ending it, the North's reasons were simply to maintain the Union. Later on slavery was used as a strategic reason, which is why the Emancipation Proclamation (1863) was delivered and freed slaves in rebellious states. Border states, Missouri, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware never had their slavery laws interfered with by that proclamation. In fact, West Virginia was admitted to the Union as a slave state in 1863 from Virginia, which pretty much nullified any reason the South had to fight.

You're literally at a confederate dinosaur park and following this man saying that this park was a weird art project poking fun at the civil war she says "yeah but there's a dark side". Why does it HAVE to have a dark side? Because it's portraying the civil war in the most ridiculous way possible? Its a freaking confederate dinosaur park. Historical revision aside, this park and the man who made it really don’t seem that bad, harmless if anything. I’m not too comfortable around confederate things like that, but this man seems pretty level headed and it seems more like he did this for the art than the politics. I mean how do you think southerners would react had he opened the park with the two sides flipped. Even if he wanted to keep it closer to history I don’t think he could have.

dirty pure, it was even acknowledged at the time in the speeches and secession letters that the reason was slavery, they were very explicit about it. The economy of the south was highly dependent on cheap slave labor. States rights: to own slaves. To give credit to later revisionist historians like the lost cause is dishonest. Like any war the individual soldier might not agree or disagree with the cause, but the war was about states owning slaves. You can revere the soldiers but don't glorify the system that fought a war to preserve slavery.

the civil war about about maintaining power and keeping the southern states in the Union. In a letter Lincoln states: "I would save the Union. I would save it the shortest way under the Constitution. The sooner the national authority can be restored; the nearer the Union will be "the Union as it was." If there be those who would not save the Union, unless they could at the same time save slavery, I do not agree with them. If there be those who would not save the Union unless they could at the same time destroy slavery, I do not agree with them. My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union. I shall do less whenever I shall believe what I am doing hurts the cause, and I shall do more whenever I shall believe doing more will help the cause. I shall try to correct errors when shown to be errors; and I shall adopt new views so fast as they shall appear to be true views." Source: www.abrahamlincolnonline.org/lincoln/speeches/greeley.htm

92bagder Lincoln’s own anti-slavery sentiment was widely known at the time. In the same letter, he went on: “I have here stated my purpose according to my view of official duty; and I intend no modification of my oft-expressed personal wish that all men every where could be free.” A month later, Lincoln combined official duty and private wish in his preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. If the north responded unification by war to the souths secession then you must agree they went to war because the south seceded, and the south seceded because of slavery.
@SouthernGentleman
@SouthernGentleman 6 лет назад
Arcticwulf Actually it wasn’t about slavery until the emancipation proclamation. The North was loosing to many battles, so they banned slavery in the Confederate states as a military tactic. And oddly not the Northern states at the time.

Why can`t she just appreciate his creativity. He spent years on this and she has to bring him down by saying its wrong to make his own story. The confederates fought for more than slavery. They wanted state`s rights and MOST IMPORTANTLY to be free from the north. Yes, it is true that some fought for slavery (which was considered ok for the time) but most fought so that they could be free from the north. At the end of the day confederate and union soldiers were american. Those monuments are to celebrate the lives that were lost for freedom (confederate) or to stay united (union).

Paul R No the civil war was based on slavery. Look at any textbook and it will tell you that.
@davidearle7209
@davidearle7209 6 лет назад
if you're going to make that statement at least finish the statement. Yes the south wanted their "freedom" from the north but a large part of why they wanted that freedom was because of the advancing efforts of the north to abolish slavery in the south. Just be real bro. Stop trying to justify it like the South had some righteous cause man.
@paulruch773
@paulruch773 6 лет назад
They seceded from the Union because of slavery, yes. They also seceded because they weren`t getting much of a say in the government compared to the north. There were more people in the north compared to the south so the north was getting more of a say in the government. The south of course didn`t like this and they decided to secede so they could get a say in their own government. The south fought for their independence from the north. In fact the civil war can be compared to the American Revolutionary War because of the south`s want of freedom (much like the colonists). The civil war only really became about slavery until after the battle of Antietam, when Lincoln issued to Emancipation Proclamation. He did this to give the north a reason to fight because up until Antietam the south was destroying the north and their moral. Also, by issuing the Proclamation, it deterred the English form helping the south. Also, after Lincoln issued the Proclamation, many guys in the north deserted because they did not want to fight to end slavery, they wanted to fight in order to preserve the union. Its very easy to say they fought for slavery and that is it. The south fought for more than just that, it is a very complex war. I`m not saying they did not fight for slavery just that there was more to it than that. Also history textbooks will tell you more than it was just about slavery. What I am trying to say is that it it was not just slavery there was way more to it.
@paulruch773
@paulruch773 6 лет назад
Who rights the history books? The victors, that`s who. Think about it this way, it would be in the North`s interest to make the confederacy evil, especially after Lincoln`s assassination and all the devastation that was created during the war Everyone here seems to think that I`m saying the confederates did not fight for slavery. I don`t know how many times I`ve said it but here`s another try. They did fight for slavery. Ok, you guys got it? Now what I`m arguing is that is wrong to say it was 100% about slavery. IT WAS NOT. They fought for many other things. Also most men in the confederate army could not afford slaves. I don`t think they would risk there lives just for a tiny chance that one day they might have one. Also I am not trying to justify fighting for slavery. They fought for freedom from the north which was traitorous, right? The colonists fought for freedom from the Brits which was traitorous but guess what, THEY WON. Oh also, they had slaves and stood for slavery.

nateman10 Also just to clarify, the reason why modern politics is so enthralled in the civil war, is because the south and what it stood for believed in, as the president of the confederacy put it "African slavery, as it exists in the United States, is a moral, a social, and a political blessing." ~Davis And people are flying his flag around. It stood for things that are unamerican, and immoral. If you want a flag to represent where you came from, fly your state flag, a lawful moral institution that doesnt stand for something that is so wrong.
