Just what happened to me at FNM days before the announcement: a relatively new guy asked me which former standard staples I own from the 2014 period onwards and if I'm willing to sell them for MCM avg. price. He was especially interested in Thoughtseizes, JVP and Mana Confluence. See, if a more or less stranger comes around and asks for such specific cards for a fixed price and wants them all and not just a playset for their modern deck, you should hold on to your stuff (kind of inside information for people that aren't completely stupid).
Thoughtseize always seems like a good deal or investment in my opinion when its below 15-20$, especially for the lorwyn versions. Then again though I might just build too many black decks.

What's wrong with speculating on Pioneer cards before everything skyrockets in price? When I heard about the format two days after the announcement I went online and bought up tons of underpriced format staples. I wanted them for decks and to have some trade value in the future. I almost bought 400 wild slashes at 9 cents a piece because I'm a mono red specialist and knew it was going to be a huge player in the format. I didn't end up buying them because I didn't want the hassle of having to unload 400 cards at a dollar a piece. I've stockpiled potential format staples on Magic Online, because what am I supposed to do with my tix anyway? At some point I'll sell the cards and have more tix to play around with. I wouldn't consider this insider trading because I found out about the format 2 days later than everyone else. If I found out the moment it was announced I would have made $20,000 too. Who cares about people buying and selling magic cards? That's a major part of the game and what it's all about. Is it fair that industry insiders can buy up all the staples before the announcement of the format even happens? No, it's not. It's not fair to the stores and bots that own these cards and sold them to an insider for a fraction of what they were worth 2 hours later. But this game is all about information. Whether it's knowing what new deck is going to dominate the upcoming tournament, whether you know the pick orders of draft formats, or whether you know which cards to speculate on to build your collection. In my opinion, the information aspect is what makes magic fun. A lot more fun than just cool art and flavor text.

What is hard to stand about the fact that people want to know who is doing the insider trading? It hurts the game and it hurts the players. It's not strange that people would want to find out what stores are doing it and name them so they can at least make some effort to control or stop it. Even if it's impossible for the players to do anything about a practice that is toxic to the game, it makes sense that they would be upset about the practice and want to do something. I don't think it is schocking or surprising to anyone anymore unless they are new to magic, but it still angers players (reasonably so) and damages the game. It only makes sense that there is going to be large vocal outcry every time another event happens.
I love the game, I hate the leaks, but it happens. When this happens we just need to try and stay away from the new “format” especially on line! There’s no equity in digital pictures that you don’t own the copyright to . Just saying. Floppy taco
Wideside trader here. Within the next 20 years, there will be another format, starting from cards released from 2025-2030. So you want to bulk buy from that point on so you have all the stables.

We may not have insider info, but those of us with the clearest picture of reality have the most opportunity to gain more wealth and freedom. Even peasants can do it if we observe reality and disregard false information. Though we can't always tell what is false, we have to commit to a risk and choose the highest probability setups.
Rudy made me scared of going out to play MTG. Now I gonna lock myself up at my basement and polish my foil hat. However, changing to serious tone the only thing I am a bit worried about is that I'm not really sure what direction are some pricy modern legal (but not pioneer legal) cards are gonna now take. Personally regarding EDH as my own more stable safeheaven I'm thinking about trading my modern cards for some EDH staples, but it's all about the timing.

If everything was a level playing field, no one would ever be ahead. Those with excess wealth are getting it by being on the other end of the field. You can't be ahead if there is nobody behind.
This one might run a little long... Rudy: Why the focus on whether or not this 'insider trading' is real or perceived as such? I don't understand why you would even broach the subject if you're unwilling to condemn or defend the action itself; those of us paying attention as you yourself said find it hard to refute that this has happened - so who gives a damn if 99% of the 'Magic community' doesn't care to know? This is the classic 'if a tree falls in the forest, does it make a sound?' paradox, except we're talking about something that would be a straight up crime if done with real commodities... which of course brings me to: Everyone else: Agitating as it might be to some of us, Magic cards are an unregulated, luxury item. There are no legal controls or checks on how they are moved or stored - you don't have to include your position in Magic cards on financial affidavits because it is not a legal 'asset' [unless it is included in stock for a physical business]. We can't have the best of both worlds, so to speak. So, while 'insider trading' may be scummy, strictly speaking there aren't any rules or laws against it and our only real recourse is to make a case to WotC such that they take action against the insiders who leak or use this information. My personal choice here is to simply boycott the format itself: I refuse to touch Pioneer, as it has been stained out of the gate. P.S.: Concerning the 'Magic community' arguments and anyone who uses the 'silent majority' to make a point: just because a large number of people own Magic cards who do not take part in the greater Magic COMMUNITY (that being any mixture of consuming Magic-related content or attendance at LGSs or events) does not mean the Magic Community is not a thing - the NFL and associated orbit is not disqualified as being it's own community simply because millions of footballs exist, nor does the existence of said footballs invalidate discussion of events and items within this Community. We need to be willing to make points and have discussions with the people who show up to HAVE the discussions without discounting them because they do not represent the majority of those who own Magic cards.

It must be coincidence that people bought up the cream of the crop in old sets in the month before the new format was announced. It is just random happenstance that the only out of rotation sets that saw an uptick in activity are the ones included in Pioneer. Nothing to see here, move along.
When I first heard about the channel I let a lot of the negative opinions surrounding rudy keep me away but then I gave it a shot and honestly it's sort of disturbing how unfair everyone has been to the man. A large majority of the videos are informative even if slightly less than completely contextually accurate but I chalk that up to the fact these videos are mostly in such short increments you know. I mean there's just so much you can fit in terms of context and scope to these things and keep the sort of brevity and concise nature youtube requires along with being careful to avoid the legal pitfalls involved and covering his own ass as anyone should. The man is as much an educator as the professor or perhaps even moreso in my opinion at this stage. I think as he says himself a lot of people( myself included at first) have simply become cynical at the idea of something genuine existing in this medium in this age.

Man I get why you feel the way you do about keeping buyer info private etc., I get as a seller you've probably gotten attacked 50,000 times over nonsense like Timmy regretting selling you the shockland or whatever. But you gotta be honest, there's a big difference between that and ripping people off using secret insider knowledge. There's a reason they're doing this in magic instead of the real world, and it's because it's insanely criminal if they do it somewhere else. The desire to string these people up isn't regular fake outrage stuff, it's 100% legitimate. Add to that the fact that people just want to play a damn game and can't enjoy it because they have to compete with these organized crime bosses just for good enough cards to pick up one win in some local nobody tournament. It's insane and eventually what happens in these systems is always the same thing, people get sick of it and just walk away. The game dies and the crime bosses get left holding piles of cardboard no one wants anymore. Sure it hasn't happened in 25 years, I'm sure it won't happen by 30 or 35 either. But the less accessible the game gets, especially when it's because of scams, the more people are going to keep quitting. Even now you see half the player base walking away over a 3 year span, per product sales tanking, wizard shifting to online and Timmy boxes... Wizards has to cater to whales and push imaginary digital products because regular players can't justify walking into a card shop and buying cards anymore. There's a hard physical limit to how far down this rabbit hole the game can go. There's like a Laffer curve for this mtg finance stuff, too little secondary market and the game starts dying, but too much secondary market scheming and the game starts dying there too. Investors, players, and collectors can all have fun and make money on this. But not if we let the insider trading wolves run the hen house.

Around 10 minutes, it's talking about people working together of their own volition to catch inside traders, which in the real financial world that information is subpoena'd by a law enforcement agency like the SEC. I think it's unreasonable to have mob justice, but the other question not being asked is "is it unreasonable to have law enforcement involved in this?"
People are upset about insider trading because they want a fair chance to get into a format without being ripped off. The hypocrisy of WotC publicly ignoring the secondary market while taking it into account in design and product releases will always piss people off. It just will. People want to be able to afford playing this game. Most of the people who play aren’t in it to get rich being pretend investors, they’re actually trying to play the game. Making magic unaffordable because of a garbage group of people trying to make a living of manipulating the secondary market hurts the community every single time. Note that I’m not talking about lgss as a whole, retail businesses and to a degree people buying long term sealed products to sell later aren’t inherently bad as long as there aren’t too many of them trying to keep mass amounts of products off the market.
