In the early 80's when Harley was struggling financially, they were trying to reinvent themselves and find better way of manufacturing. Harley asked Honda, who had been manufacturing motorcycles for several year in Marysville, Ohio if they could visit and observe Honda's motorcycle manufacturing process. Harley engineers were very impressed with the Honda processes and went back and reinvented their manufacturing processes. One of the technical magazines published an article about Harley's Jelley Bean production method. From that article you tell Honda had helped the in many ways. I was proud to see how much Honda had helped a competitor.
@lynskyrd

Yes- Harley took the Japanese JIT system and customized it for their specific needs- called it MAN (Materials As Needed). This, along with finally developing an engine that didn't need a top end job after 10,000 miles and didn't leak oil all over the driveway; helped Harley-Davidson become profitable and sustainable. Also, let's not forget- the US government legislated extra tariffs on foreign motorcycles 750cc or higher.

Indeed, someone didn't do their homework before making a baseless comment. Harley keeps an engine design around for many years longer than other companies which adds to it's reliability stats (time is part of reliability statistics) and it's big bore cylinders produce a hefty amount of torque. Torque is arguably the only number that means anything power-wise. A heavy haul truck will typically have about 425 horsepower, way less than some modified/higher-end sports cars, but the 1850 ft-lb of torque the heavy haul truck has means it can pull weight that the high horsepower sports cars can't.
@Overland-Defender
@Overland-Defender Год назад
@@killer2600 "Produce a hefty amount of torque"...Do you mean the 101 ft-lbs the M8 makes even though its a 107 cubic inches haha. My comment was about the power aspect of that quote in the video, not reliability. Ive got a twin-cam, evo, and a shovel, Harleys have never made any kind of power and if you think they do this conversation isn't worth having...

If all the components were made here the motorcycles would cost more than double their current price. Most of the aftermarket parts come from China...even Jap bikes are built here in the USA. It's a matter of economics. I've ridden almost every brand except Russian made bikes only because I can't find them as easy as the others. They all offer a unique experience that Bikers should embrace. It'll make you appreciate what you ride even more...

I was at the last smoke out in Rockingham, NC. Along with festivities was drag racing among anyone who wanted to on the drag strip. Two HD FXRs and two Victory Vegas bikes blew everything else there away. This included many modern liter superbikes. Yes they had some performance work done . Pipes, cams high flow intakes. Somethings the average owner could afford to do. Basically getting the govt restrictions out. Slow they werent. At least not in the quarter mile.
@killer2600

You sound jealous, can't afford one? If a harley owner wanted a crotch rocket they could have easily bought one but they didn't. You're rag on HD only works if people should buy what others want them to buy instead of the things they want to buy.

No, the over priced is a function of American labor costs, corporate profit margins, pluss more profit for dealers with building and staff costs. 😊 It ain't the 1970's $$$$$$$$$$$$$

I agree that HD builds great bikes but for Asian countries where roads are not like the states, overheating is a problem. I know, I bought a 2020 FXDR 114. Sadly had to sell it. I do not like to baby a bike, it is serviced and cared for but when I ride, I ride, not worry.

I recently ordered and received a 2023 Breakout in Australia. It wasn't until I had ordered it that I found out it was being built in Thailand and not coming from the US like my previous HD, I was disappointed to think it wasn't a US build. When the bike arrived I was happy with the build quality and the look of the bike. After all its still a Harley and my fourth M8, awesome bikes.

I have had 6 new Harleys since 2016, this is my worst nightmare in ownership. The crack head who assembled my ‘21 Pan America must have hated the new direction the company is taking with the revolution max motor. I have had screws back out without thread locker, the electronics and reliability have been a joke. If I wanted an unreliable expensive adv bike, I would have bought a KTM. This my last Harley, going back to Honda

over 100 years and they still can't get the engine right. From the underpowered oil pump to the pressed together flywheel to the cheap shoes on the cam chain tensioners they are designed to provide a steady stream of service revenue.

I've been a rider for 50 years. All the Japanese brands, dirt, street, competition, etc. also BMWs, Moto Guzzis, even vintage Spanish competition bikes. Still have my built '86 Guzzi LeMans and recently bought a Road Glide Ultra. Love it. My go-fast days are behind me and I used the LeMans as a sport-tourer. It was time to put away the tank bag, soft saddlebags, clip-ons and rearsets and enjoy traveling backroads in comfort. Horses for courses. Can't beat the HD aftermarket support either.
