INSIDE Valvoline's SECRET R&D Laboratory to UNCOVER the TRUTH

Every engine begins building up deposits the moment it starts up for the first time. Deposits in the piston ring grooves can negatively affect the performance of the piston rings - high blow by and increased oil consumption. Valvoline claims to have developed a new motor oil technology, "Restore & Protect returns pistons
to factory clean by removing up to 100% of deposits when used as directed and prevents new deposits from forming."
That’s a BIG claim, so I had to see if that was marketing hype or scientific breakthrough. Fortunately, I know the Chief R&D Officer at Valvoline, so we got a backdoor pass to their engine test lab to see for ourselves.

Wow! I'm blown away by the response to this video. Just a few points of clarification: 1 - Restore & Protect is for gasoline engines. It is not designed or intended for use in diesel engines. 2 - Many viewers asked for a video about this product, and it just happened that I know Roger and we are working on the hydrogen engine project along with Total Seal. That's how this video came into being. Valvoline did not contact me to sponsor this video. 3 - The point of this video is that what you see on a spec sheet doesn’t always equate to what will actually happen in the engine. That's why I wanted to make this video and in this way. Spec sheets don't tell the whole story, and this product provided a perfect way to illustrate that point.

At just before 20 min you show how you have to have the equipment to measure and test physical results. Are you going to go back to your additive vid and correct the results where you're trashing additives without testing, as you acknowledge here? Or is every vid only for the sake of your buddies? You've completely discredited yourself by showing you know proper procedures, but seemingly prove you hate additives for favor of Valvoline testing facilities.... Don't get me wrong, I appreciate Valvoline's cleaning abilities, but in a towing 460, their oil doesn't hold up. If I put in a quart of that Lucas stabilizer that you claim only thickens the oil, then my oil doesn't break down from heat, and the engine lasts for 80k+ instead of 10k..... What I'm saying is that you can't be biased and hold credibility at the same time... And oddly, your face shows your intent every time... When you change this and start to speak truthfully, as you obviously have experience and know the proper procedures and choose who is worthy of them and who not, then the cause of cancer disappears... just like stabilizing the temperature of the oil to retain lubricity.

@@Faolan161 I agree, it would have been cool for him to show the potentially disastrous effects of additives in engine testing, but as expensive as that would be, I can see why he didn't and it was still a very educational video. He didn't say additives will never work in any application and that they will always cause destruction, what he (correctly) said is that using an additive is a gamble because you have no way to know how it will interact with the base oil and additive package already used in the oil and you have no good way to quantify the results. I'm curious to know why you think the Valvoline you used in your 460 didn't hold up? Did you have it analyzed? Were you losing oil pressure? Burning oil? Etc

Blows me away when it comes to "Bio-fuels" though. I've given up trying to explain to people that mixing a chemical cocktail in your shed with a bucket and a stick will never compete with the fuel companies and their huge budget R&D quest. Long-term it will not only cost them time and money sourcing all the ingredients but ultimately downtime while a mechanic tries to unravel all the internal destruction they have caused.

Changed plugs and refilled with Castrol. All burned up in a month. Tried Liqui Moly, Mobil 1, same results. In January, I decided to try this. +Valvoline is a decent product. For oil. Yeah no arguing that. The real problem is being told oil out of the ground is a "fossil fuel" - dinosaur bones, and is a limited resource. Even the number of years dinosaurs were on the earth, what is it like 150 million years? LOL? All of that was made up by John D. Rockefeller. Scientists have no clue how long the dinosaurs were on the earth. Seriously. Given that we are told there are 200 years of reserves of oil in the ground they wanted to make sure to "account" for that large of number, or millions of barrels of oil. Scientists like to keep their jobs so they do what they are told. All to make the claim "oil" (thus gasoline, which is simply a "by product" from making Kerosene. and for years nobody knew what to do with the stuff, and scientists trying to work with it caught themselves on fire and died This would be mid to late 1800's. The oil industry in the beginning did not intentionally make gasoline. It's a by product we're getting charged $4 a gal right now. And why not 1 octane level instead of 3? the 1 that works? lol) but anyway by making oil a "fossil fuel" or dinosaur bones meant the oil company could claim it as a "limited resource" because there are no more dinosaurs. Right? Well, oil is actually made constantly and currently in the "mantle" of the earth's crust again as a "by product" from the earths inner workings and mechanisms. Not sure exactly what they are, but oil wells pumped dry years ago are refilling today. In fact, that has created a problem with natural gas producton. As you don't want oil in your natural gas. Plus, there are geysers of oil at the very bottom of every ocean (along fault lines) that are releasing hundreds of gallons of oil into the ocean per minute. Too deep though for us to retrieve. But scientists think these geysers have been around hundreds if not thousands of years. If not, currently they are not slowing down anyway. Scientists can and do good work They just have to get "approval" what is allowed to be released to the public. Lava is more prevalent, but oil is more like Lava than dinosaur bones. (And if dinosaur bones are white, why is oil black? lol ) What's a shame is to have this be taught in schools. 50-60% of what is taught in schools is a narrative supporting corporate business. 100% of what is taught in public schools has been approved by the Rockefeller family who it was John D. Rockefeller who "started" the National Educaton System in America in the 1930's. And a Rockefeller has been on the board ever since. The other people on the board are approved by the Rockefellers too. The Rockefeller Foundation is the only organization that funds the FDA - The Food and Drug Administration, other than our taxes. And yeah, Rockelfellers on their board too throughout history.) But don't believe me, what do I know? Check it out yourself. I love cars, and right now it seems to me if it were not for OPEC and maybe the car manufacturers, maybe, that we would all being driving scooters if we had to abide by the "western" governments wishes. The price of cars keep increasing so "regular" folk soon won't be able to afford them new. Or has that already happened?) Peace.

@@jamesholmes3955 After so many miles of driving, engine oil additives break down. It's those additives that help to keep your engine clean where it counts, so you probably don't want to go over 7,000mi (if you can help it.) Think the wording on the bottle suggest using "regular" change intervals which for some newer vehicles could be a VERY long time (my 2003 is 6 months/6k miles, and 2014 is more like 12 months... Newer cars seem even crazier. 20K-25K miles. What?!) and the Video shows an example after just 4,000 miles. Now for my vehicles I have Drop in Filter Cartridges and per the OLM (and Oil Analysis) tend to run 6-8K miles OK on a "regular" Full Synthetic. Seems with R&P like it'd be very cheap Insurance (and maybe improve/speed cleanup) to throw in a fresh Oil filter at 3-4K miles (or 2k if getting fresh Oil at 4k?)... And an early warning if a particularly Sludged up/deposit heavy engine is an overachiever...

This company I corresponded with did not agree. This is why I will only use a mobile filter or maybe even an oem filter... Even Honda manuals will say you can change the filter every other oil change. More frequent oil changes matter almost more than new filters. If you run this cleaning type oil you probably want to consider changing the filter at 3,000 mi or something but there's another person commenting on here that he found gauge pressure changes and I have a question at him to see what he thinks and I also asked Lake to comment on if this is periodic use or if it is to be used regularly.

Valvoline has always been good at keeping the internals clean, 30 years ago I serviced a Toyota Corolla, I removed the tappet cover to adjust the valves and I couldn't see the rocker gear for sludge build up, I put the tappet cover back on, filled it with Valvoline XLD, next oil change the top end was spotless. My Corolla had worn main journals and would drop oil pressure to 0 when hot, the only oil that held pressure when hot was the XLD 20W50

Considering the cost of oils at the moment, I change the oil in the following sequence: 1) I drain the old oil and *throw out* the old oil filter. 2) I install a new oil filter (high quality *Baldwin*) a larger than needed filter (for good flow filtration) 3) For flushing (some of the old oil still remains - that cannot be drained), I fill in inexpensive DIESEL (because diesel oil contains a large amount of additives) oil, and the engine runs on this diesel oil for 20..30 minutes, at the end of this procedures (when the oil warms up and becomes well thin) I increase the engine speed at idle ( do a certain amount of gassing (to wash the mechanisms in the camshaft) 4) I drain the diesel oil and fill it with fresh synthetic oil according to the specifications for my car. 5) I repeat everything after 3000 miles.

My 2013 MDX is suffering from the infamous oil consumption problem caused by the low tension rings last year, about the time this product was released. The problem developed 1yr after they ended the recall campaign. I was going to get rid of this car until I come across a glimmer of hope from Valvoline. However, I can't find Valvoline R&P anywhere so I called and was directed to purchase from Valvoline Global. Look for discounts to buy extra to refill in between oil changes. I've also used Mobile 1 then Fram extended long life oil filters instead of oem. Valvoline is smart to have maintained a good call center online chat to answer questions and pricing quantity discounts. I'm on my 2nd oil change with Restore and Protect. Car had consumed about the same amount of oil after the 1st change. Then I observed wet PCV valve, which has been replaced. I'm observing the second one right now. The solution for Toyota engines having oil burn problems after certain miles for the low tension rings on their pistons that get stuck for the deposits ...why Toyota doesn't use this type of oil for their OEM oil?

Thanks for doing this video. I bought this for my most recent oil change in my 2010 Sierra 5.3 with just over 100k miles. There is a little section on the bottle that says it must be used for 3 oil changes for the results to be noticed. Unfortunately I didn't take a video/pictures of the inside of my engine before I used it, so all I can go by is how well my truck continues to run. I was also wondering about removing too much debris from the interior of the engine at once, and after reading the note on the bottle, I started to think that the reason for the slow and steady was so that it would protect the internal oil passages as well as not clog up the oil pick up and filter.

Great video. Thanks for getting us in. Love everyone's excitement and enthusiasm, and the extraordinary products they develop. I grew up at Indy as part of the Valvoline family and have been a user in all my cars and trucks throughout my 50 years of driving. Over one million miles between three vehicles, all purchased new by me, using ONLY Valvoline oils since their first oil change, and all still run as well as they did when new. 250,000 on my "toy." 300,000 on a daily that I gave away after replacing it with my current daily. And that current one is still going strong after 400,000. Valvoline has always been the best, and Maxlife is the best of the best... best product ever created, for old AND new engines. The only oil that's ever been in my 400,000 mile daily vehicle. I never doubted the validity of new, Restore and Protect, but it's still great fun to see it up close and personal in this video. Looking forward to using it in a car I just inherited before eventually swapping it to Maxlife. Thanks for this excellent video!

Great video, and you did address my initial thoughts of overwhelming an oil filter with the removed material from the interior engine components. Now please address this question as well. Should an oil change interval be shortened, especially when beginning the use of this product? I do 5K oil changes, should I drop to 3K or even 2.5K for the first use of this product? One of my vehicles could probably benefit from this product. I would be very interested in using this on my 06 silverado.

My question is regarding the formilation of the Penzoil 0w-16 which is currently available. Does that oil also have this same amount of ester or cleaning molicule as its referred to in marketing terms? I intend to run two cycles of the 0w-20 with changes at about 4k intervals.

I don’t think Valvoline is giving out their formula for R&P. Have you ever thought of installing an oil catch can on your vehicle’s PCV loop? Really has worked well for my 3rd gen Prius. Normally the oil vapors from the PCV system combine with the EGR gasses to form a muck which eventually blocks the EGR ports on the air intake manifold. The OCC I installed really does trap a bunch of the stuff coming out of the PCV system.

Granddaughter got a 2014 Toyota with the 2.7L VVT-2 engine. It would use almost a quart of Supertech 0W-20 High Mileage between oil changes. Thought about potentially stuck rings, so substituted a quart of Marvel in the next oil change. That oil was noticeably darker when it came out. Next OC was with the St 0W-20 HM again with no extra additives. Oil consumption was about 1/2 of what it was when she bought the car.
