Riding in a Zoox car is boring, which is exactly how the company likes it. Every time a rider says they had a boring ride, Zoox knows it’s one step closer to delivering fully autonomous vehicular transportation to the masses.
Oh, and don’t call it a car.
“This is not a car,” says Jesse Levinson, Co-Founder and CTO at Zoox. “The fact you cannot drive a Zoox vehicle by yourself, that it doesn’t have manual controls, that in our view distinguishes it from what people traditionally refer to as cars.”
In fact, Zoox views its vehicles as an antidote to cars. If Zoox has its way, no one will own cars in the future. Instead, people will use its fleet of on-call, fully-autonomous vehicles.
Car ownership could become obsolete and in its stead may be a safer, greener, more reliable form of vehicular transportation.

Until the companies using these vehicles start charging "premium", in order to be picked up as a priority, I don't believe there's such a thing as completely equal treatment.

One of the big challenges that rarely get mentioned is how they're going to keep this thing clean and safe inside (spilling foods or drinks, vomiting, pranks, vandalism, drug transportation, terrorism, real or wannabe pornstars doing their thing...) Because there's no human surveillance it would need the digital alternative of that, but then the whole privacy thing becomes an issue. Being able to rate if a vehicle is clean when it arrives and linking it to the previous passenger would be ok, but still not foolproof.

The other issue is not everybody lives in cities. there are miles and miles of rural roads in very small backwater towns in the USA. and what if you are moving to a new place. Let's face it. We will always need cars.

Damn, this idea is pretty interesting. However, if Zook can make autonomous bus, that would be more efficient to carry more people at one time. Hopefully that would make the ride cheaper.

This is awesome! As an elderly person who no longer drives the isolation is terrible. Having to depend on there for transport to doctors, grocery stores , post office etc is daunting. Zoom would give is freedom!

The people before us were tremendously important, without than we wouldn't have any conditions to do what we can do today. @@isquisi3435 I understand your point of view and sentiment, I fully understand and appreciate that technology can be used to help people in a positive way and there is nothing wrong with that but I also take it with a pinch of salt and caution. As far as civilization, history is always written by the Victor's so I hardly believe a word of the mainstream narrative, why you ask...? Because I have my own experience that the government and science will lie to push a certain agenda. How many times has the government been caught lieing to the public? its endless.... Its always us the people vs our slave masters, those who weild power over us. I'm in the category of free thinking, independent research and practical applications rather than putting my faith in a bunch of nameless faceless people who hide behind close doors telling you they are experts and to trust them. If I can verify what I'm told with my own experience eyes and ears then I can agree or disagree. My view is civilization gets to this point where we become puffed up and proud with our technology which ultimately leads to our own destruction. What use is all this tech if we cannot love our neighbours, have healthy disagreements without hating one another. In my lifetime I have seen technology advance a great deal but I have also seen mankind stoop to the low depths that we see now. War and hate is Constantly around us and the tyranny you see outside your window is a conformation to me that we are on the verge of collapse again.

I tried using a traditional taxi service a few times and learned some things about it. One of the things i learned is that you can get a taxi to come and pick you up and drive you to a location but you cant always get a taxi to take you BACK. Here in croatia,the taxi service is not a reliable mode of transportation.

As a driver i love this idea. No more need to have a car/car payment/insurance payment/gas payment. For me thats like saving almost $500 a month (6k a year), so if the cost is less than that then its definitely worth it

I find it amazing how Americans lose their minds over things like autonomous cars so they don't have to drive. yet they get so defensive of their cars and upset when someone tries to fund robust public transportation. I think Zoox will be amazing if they get the tech and safety regulations worked out. but until then we can get our local gov't to invest in robust public transportation.

@@kaleb5926 Yes, it's much better to be driving next to irresponsible strangers in 5 ton metal cubes going nearly a hundred miles per hour so that you can get there almost as fast as a train with well over 1000x the risk of bodily harm. Also, traffic in America is pretty god awful is most metro areas. And yes, a lot of people here would much rather ride the train than drive, our trains just suck because we don't fund them or prioritize them at all. So no, none of your points make sense and yes, we should fund public transit.

It's inaccurate to say it's capable of level 5 autonomy. It can only drive in pre planned routes and needs a team of people to constantly be updating the maps or it won't know what to do. In order to reach level 5 it would need to be able to think for its self like a driver does and not be geographically limited. No one is even close to that but Tesla.

To me, the Zoox is what I've always thought autonomous vehicles would become: a living room on wheels. I see a day coming, a day in the not very distant future, where you'll be able to call up such a vehicle for a long road trip. The interior of the vehicle will be equipped with seating that transforms into beds and will also function like a living room. There will also be a small microwave oven and refrigerator on board so you can have meals and snacks during your trip. The vehicle will do all the driving for you and you will arrive at your destination well rested and refreshed.

Really cool vision! It's almost like the long train journeys of yesteryear. It'll be interesting if, with sufficient range and comfort, people opt to simply take autonomous vehicles over flights - even if the travel time is longer, the ability to go door to door with minimal hassle could make it more appealing.

Owning a car gives me the peace of mind of knowing I can get my family to emergency care BEFORE a hearse is needed. I'd love to have level 5 automation drive me to the hospital especially if the speed limits could be overridden. But unfortunately this is merely a tool for corporations to make money in big cities where people are at the mercy of "decision makers". Who gets the ride out of town during riots or wildfires? And what if my social credit score is too low because I don't go along with the hive mind?

Congrats you misunderstood it. Cars will still be used but only in emergencies. Rest of it can be fulfilled by trains,buses,bikes,feet and the zoox vehicles.

I would say private cars are not just for emergencies. People love to own private vehicles as it acts as the extensions of their private house outside. In that, private cars provide privacy. You can be messy with it, do something naughty with it and no one will ever judge you, accost you or record what you doing. Self-driving car like this one, are planned not to be sold to the public, they will be treated as public transportation run by private corporations. And given the current development on social media (a public platform run by very politically partisan private corporations), they can deny service to you if they think you violating their "term of service" which is arbitrary, politically bias, and can change on a whim.

Amazing and decent way of transportation which seems economical and environment friendly. The present infrastructure can't afford the the pressure of indefinite number of vehicles even if affordable for many. It will need to be discouraged by additional taxation.

I see these as transportation for first and last mile. Something that gets you to the light rail station and from the light rail station to your office/home.That's the biggest challenge with public transportation... getting to and from it.

That's a very interesting idea. One could certainly have a number of such vehicles parked at stations of commuter trains. I regularly watch how people are picked up at such stations with cars.

It is kind of easy to say Zoox is on level 3 autonomous whereas Tesla "Autopilot" is on level 2 autonomous. In reality, there are so many corner cases where you cannot expect in simulation. You need tremendous amount of real world data in order to safely deploy through out the world and it has the ability to go almost anywhere. Honestly, Zoox is not on level 5 autonomous. They are only testing on certain route with limited data. Tesla, on the other hand, gaining million of miles data from FSD everyday around the world, yet Tesla haven't claimed they have reached level 5 autonomous, but they already have achieved the ability to go anywhere autonomously with latest FSD V11. So in terms of Autonomous, Tesla is ahead of every rival.

Curent tesla models don't even have the necessary Hardware for more than Level 2 assistent. In contrast to elons bs the levels are not arbitrary, there are objective standarts. It is frustrating to see Tesla Fans rank assistent levels by feel instead of actual tests. Tesla would definatly brag about level3 if they legitimatly could but they can't and say the cars are Level 2 on thier own website.

$2 per ride to commute from your house to your work everyday, and it will beat tesla to a pulp, you want Billions of data, there you go. Not everyone could buy a tesla, but everyone could use a cheap public transport. you don't have to pay any driver, and the car won't get tired from 16 hours of driving. also it have potentials for package delivery as well if the public transport is cheaper than your gas or having your own electric car, and you can call it on demand, people will switch. tesla FSD is not there yet

I love the way these start-ups always pitch themselves as doing "social good" using the same cultural buzz words and meaningless "empowerment" vernacular that you've seen in a thousand bland "inclusive" corporate keynotes (thanks Apple!). However, at the end of the day, as usual, they own everything, literally from the wheels up, an MBA's wet dream of vertical integration. "TaaS", they call it, which sounds a lot nicer than "we own it all" and you are just the "forever tenant", or the "pay monthly monkey". "You'll own nothing and be happy" as they say. Don't get me wrong, I can't blame them, but I resent the condescension in their tired rhetoric, that they are doing what they are to improve society and make people "happy" blah blah. No, they are doing it for the same reason anyone ever has, namely to enrich themselves. Again, this is fine, good luck to them but please can they stop with the virtue signaling bs, they ain't a benevolent entity, they want our money. So just be honest by respecting people enough to speak plainly. I am talking about this company right now, but I really could be addressing any one of these "socially woke start-ups". After all, they all look and sound the same. I prefer the old school companies, at least they didn't tell you what nice people they are while they are f::king you and some of them at least seemed happy with owning less than 100% of your life.

I'm saying sooner or later everything will be subscription based and that is what I am afraid of. Having to rely on subscription will suck if you want to pay everything off and retire.

I don't want to drive them, I want to own them, big difference. They want to own them all and get rich, which is fine as i said. However, telling me they are doing me and society a favour blah blah at the same time, is a bit rich lol. Not my fault you don't mind owning nothing. You can relax on your horse I guess, though when you haven't got a job, like all transportation workers and you can't own the asset that replaced you, I guess you won't be able to affford your hobby hourse either. So good luck with that.

Personally, I think it's a great concept, but if this is classed as "disruptive" technology by, for instance, US gov't agencies, it will have many more obstacles to overcome before they ever hit the road in any significant capacity.

Omg this is so so so amazing. Ever since I heard about level 5 autonomy like... 6 years ago or whatever I've been thinking about how taxis and transportation will look like in the future. And I've been imagining these doors and a small vehicle (not a bus) and the bidirectionality. And now this video pops up and I've never heard of zoox but you awesome people are actually building what I've been imagining. And more of course! This is nothing but amazing. This will be the future. I'd bet on it. This will free up so freaking much space in the cities! Omg seriously I am on the edge of my seat here, I rarely get that excited about something. Many people don’t have cars or access to good/reliable transportation for a reasonable price. This is what they aim to solve. Nowhere mentions removing cars entirely, actually they are extending the possibility of travel to so many who don’t have the freedom

Or, if I want to go to the local shops, yes I’ll wait for the contraption to arrive, then I’ll have to check that the last person in it didn’t leave behind any needles, or throw up. While I'm a tech guy, I live in Alaska, and just the operational logistics alone for something like this here are at an optimistic 30 years out. Maybe. These vehicles are truly great for San Francisco, Singapore, or Paris, but not here in Alaska, not yet. Tech does not operate well when it's dark for 18 hours and -65f in white out snow....for 4 months. Also, our state is the size of Western Europe, has 52 active volcanos, is very geologically active with constant large earthquakes, an abundance of wildlife that wants to eat you, tsunamis, the majority of the state is unpopulated and not developed. Just some food for thought towards, uh, blanket statements about the future lol.

if Zoox can build an elderly and PWD-friendly vehicle then I'm all for it. Also these would make school buses safer to ferry kids to and from schools. I love the idea of less cars and irresponsible drivers on the roads. I look forward to roads and sidewalks not cramed with double parkings or illegal parkings/makeshift personal garages. Vehicles like the ones of Zoox here presented seem to become reincarnations of the train compartments of the era around 1900. Around 1900 you'll indeed have had much fewer cars than today, but I'm not so certain if there also were fewer coaches and cars than earlier in the 19th century then. The coaches and cars will reincarnate likewise!

There are too many weaknesses in this project for this to be viable. 1. This is local only. When it comes to inter-city travel, this vehicle is useless. 2. Vandalism is a problem and so is hacking. There is 0 explanation about cybersecurity and it doesn't seem very hard to mess with the sensors outside the vehicle via spraypaint or a heavy object. 3. So the vehicle can avoid crashes. But what about other vehicles crashing into the zoox? 4. And in the case of an injury or a fatality, who is going to be held responsible? 5. How will insurance companies categorize accidents and fatalities? And just so much more issues that remain unresolved in the video. This is just a gimmick in the end and provides a solution to nothing except to line their own pockets with money.

I love my car as if it were an extension of myself. And everyone I know feels the same. Yes they are expensive to fix and run, but freedom has no price. I like going where I want when I want, according to my own personal needs and desires. I however am not ok with being stranded without a vehicle and would rather spend money on my own personal vehicle than to pay for ride-sharing. I am not now or ever going to be ok with the government deciding where I go or when I go there. Maybe you are. Maybe you like being controlled.

buses do not cover all needs. if you are a youngster living in a city centre with a bus line from your apartment to your office, and never need to carry more than a briefcase or backpack, then yes, buses are great for you. but for anything that goes beyond that - which is a lot - buses often are not adequate. they don't do last mile and have you waiting at stations during wind and weather. depending on your condition and/or your luggage, the trip to the nearest station may not be doable. they run on rigid schedules which makes them inadequate for trips involving time sensitive appointments. try going shopping for a week worth of groceries for your family of five, carrying and pulling all of your bags through public transit. it is not always acceptable to share a space with strangers (and I'm not referring to class here). whether you get a seat or not being up to chance is often not acceptable. you may have baggage that is not suitable for buses or comparable forms of public transit. and the list goes on... for many people and situations - and pretty much all elderly and/or disabled people - those conditions are just not acceptable. if we ever are to attain an infrastructure where car ownership is actually rendered obsolete, then the mix of transportation services truly needs to cover 100% of all rides. if just 10% of rides are still vastly more comfortable with owned cars, then most people will still at least own one and use it over public transit. conventional public transit such as buses is great and should be expanded, but autonomous taxis are a crucial piece to the solution, too.

@@stefanosanastasi99 as explained, it's not "weird one time situations" but a massive bulk of trips. as frequently as it would be required, renting a car will be difficult to do on demand, would be too expensive, and a much greater hassle than to order an autonomous ride. how do you get to the car rental place and back home, for instance? the result would be most people still owning a car over using transit services.

Um, more respectfully than another reply I read here, while I'm all for public transit, the idea of transferring your autonomy to an unknown, unaccountable operator controlling a fully encapsulated unbound vehicle sound bad. Autonomy is for individual people, not places or things. Besides, their model city, San Francisco, reminds us of why we can't have nice things. The minute some drug-addled Newsomite defecates in the center of one of these boxes, the ride is over.

I can't believe this video purports to be level 5 autonomy and says Tesla is level 2. Literally and physically impossible based on sheer data.

This is always the endstate tesla is headed toward. Zoox is trying to get to the endstate without building the automobile as the next step. Here's why it wont work: developing the factory and infrastructure is harder/more expensive than building the concept. For this to be successful you have to make a robotaxi thats as cost effective as an uber. When i see humans still putting their cars together by hand you know they are a decade plus from that vision. In that time tesla will not only have made more affordable level 3 vehicles, but they will undoubtedly get into the robotaxi/uber market as well.

American suburbs are so sprawling, it might still make sense to own a vehicle to avoid waiting for the ride to arrive. That will also reduce total miles moved, because there's no empty miles. In cities, though, the service model seems great!

Whoa! Transportation as a service? Where have I heard that before? Oh right, busses with a capacity of 30+ people that do the same thing, only much more fuel-efficient. I see this as a service for the future dominated by really competent public transportation, for people rich enough to afford their own vehicle. This would actually be better if the vehicles were larger, had more capacity. This would also be competing public transportation, cutting into the profits of train and bus operations, and reducing service capacity.

Uber relies on privately owned cars to be driven by their owners to provide transport. This company goes a step further and claims to want to do away with cars owned by people. Then what kind of future are they planning for? A future without cars has drastically less roads, replaced by space for pedestrians, cyclists, busses, trolleys, subways, monorails, etc. On a sidewalk with 10 pedestrians, you could hardy fit 2 cars, which could each have one person. In Philadelphia, there are more parking spaces than cars, more than people! Every time LA adds a lane to their highway, the estimated duration of each car's commute increases by 1 minute. If they scale their operation, then they still need space to store the "vehicles", they still need roads to drive them, so what are they getting rid of? The capacity of individuals to own their transportation? If the only benefit is now "vehicle" companies are getting the profit instead of Lyft and Honda, then what have you really solved?

It's an interesting question how it will fit in with public transportation. We've been following some advances in cities making themselves more walkable/bikeable and having better public transit as well. It seems like we could be at a key change point for transportation and it remains to be seen which solutions will be dominant in 30 years, or if it varies by region. It's worth noting that there are already regions with extremely competent public transportation--Tokyo, for example--but they still pretty much all have cars. It's hard to replicate the utility of fast door to door service, especially capable of transporting baggage, even with world-class transit--to say nothing of the need for delivery, construction and emergency-service vehicles. But shifting to vehicles like this could drastically reduce the need for parking, especially in crowded areas (unused cars could simply fill up garages, and potentially more densely since they wouldn't necessarily have to all be able to get out independently). They could save everyday people a lot of money by removing the need to pay registration/gas/insurance/maintenance and being much less expensive than cab rides, and lower emissions by dramatically accelerating the EV transition. Of course, public transportation could certainly help fulfill these goals as well, and who knows - perhaps even making autonomous buses will be part of the solution. Time will tell!

@@dentistrider3874 I don't see how you can take for granted a potential of such taxis to _drastically_ reduce the amount of roads needed. If people still drive just as much as today, with such vehicles being added on the roads, then the need of roads will stay the same. It could theoretically come that thanks to a growth of the number of people per vehicle you'll save one or two lanes here or there, but who owns a car now will probably want an own car also after such taxis have emerged. It's a completely different feeling if you know that you have an own, customized, familiar car (with certain things inside) waiting for you in your garage, at any time, or if you, yourself, have to wait, again and again, for a car which is not customized, not necessarily even familiar, and not carrying certain objects which you'd hope to have at hand at any time. So you basically can assume that who has an own car now will also use an own car - perhaps an autonomous one - after an emergence of such taxis, while numberless people who now use buses or trains, or stay at home altogether, will _add_ vehicles to the roads.

BIG fan of this mode of future transportation. The SEATS!!! The seats HAVE to be able to lean back so people can sleep. This is a MUST HAVE. It's what makes this mode of transportation unique. Add in some muzak on/off button so each one couple can have some privacy when they talk. Needs cameras around and IN the vehicle to help ensure safety.

It's always hilarious when they say things like "these can do Level 5 while Tesla can only do Level 2". Sure, the company that has billions of hours of real-world recorded data and a proven track record of producing cars hasn't figured out what this startup who hasn't produced a single vehicle has. Let me tell you the one and only difference between Tesla and all these other guys who make these claims: Tesla correctly estimates the level of safety required for an autonomous vehicle, and all these other guys underestimate the level of safety required for an autonomous vehicle. That's the only difference. They're all naive and will fail because of it.

Was looking for a comment like this one. If they actually had level 5 autonomy, they would no longer need to do any tests, but as they are still heavily testing it, that only proves that its far from being level 5. I can bet that they are at same level if not worst than tesla. Tesla works on all roads, while they are heavily dependent on premapped routes. It might work out for city driving, but until they get anything workable without service car fallowing them around, like Waymo, its just PR move to claim to have level 5 autonomy and nothing more. And i can bet that they have * somewhere stating that it wont work in snow or heavy rain.

@@Zripas When you say "Tesla works on all roads", I assume you mean that Tesla knows when to hold its hands in the air and shout "Help, I give up!". I've been surprised by what Tesla technology can achieve in videos I've watched, but I'm still sceptical about fully functional fully autonomous cars arriving in my lifetime. I expect to be driving for perhaps another 30 years and I'm certainly not expecting to encounter one.

@@richardgreenwood3355 Self driving technology is relatively new thing and only in recent years it became something what people are ready to invest into. Give it few more years and it will reach level 3 or 4. While getting to level 5 will take allot more time due to the fact that this would basically require you to have actual AI which can make actual appropriate decisions in some weird situations. I mean there are some weird ones you encounter in your daily life where you need to do some "bunkers" move to get out current situation, so situations like those will be hardest for FSD to handle. But to have car driving around town in generic traffic, that one is already possible and works quite well

@@Zripas Most of my driving is not 'round town'. I live down a country lane that's only one vehicle wide. When I meet an oncoming vehicle I know where it's safe to pull into the grass verge and where it isn't (because of mud or a ditch!). Often one of us needs to reverse so that depends what the other vehicle is and who is closer to a safe spot. Even in my local town there are plenty of narrow (single-track) roads without road markings and there are parked cars everywhere. (All this is in the UK of course, not the US). I just don't see even very sophisticated AI being able to cope for a very long time.

No, absolutely not. I have ridden in hundreds of busses, cabs, planes, trains, not one was ever clean except for the BART in SF but that was the week after it opened, the train cars had that new train car smell. I am tired of being forced to stand, I am too old for that, in too much pain. I am tired of people peeing on busses, beer bottles rolling around, vandalism, gang tagging, and exposure to other people's rude habits. Their viruses. Their loud music, the rule violations that the drivers will not confront them about for fear of their lives, and the freaking EXPENSE! Public transport is not the cheap assed way to get around it used to be. My monthly commuting costs from Carmel NY to Grand Central used to be $711 per month. And that was 2001. They will never make a substitute for private transportation. They will just make private transportation so expensive only the wealthy will have it.

Well, I've been dissapointed when I heard of no private ownership for the vehicles. Cars are a problem in cities, but that is solved by improving public transportation, there're a lot of examples of that in Europe. And in rural and wild areas, there are a lot of benefit to owning your vehicle yourself -- instant readiness, personal storage, zero waiting cost. At least, that's what I think someone loving picnics would think. So Zoox is essentially a replacement for taxi services -- which is nice, but a little too small niche for a country of car-owners. They're going to have a hard time.

It seems like a novel idea and I admire the ambition of those anxious to make it a reality. Unfortunately, when it comes to human beings, greed and a general lack of accountability are the very aspects of this equation that simply cannot be factored out through artificial means.

There are many machines and automated processes in regular use for which you in the end can make responsible individual beings. With airplanes, for example, crashes not caused by the pilots can often be traced to errors made by engineers responsible for the maintenance of the machines. This has worked for many decades now, so I don't see in what way the human psyche should generally not be able to attain such a handling also of dangers caused by errors of AVs.

Yes it’s a good idea but we have to admit having a personal car has it’s benefits like the ability to take as much luggage as you would like based on the size of the trunk, family outing (long journeys) would not be as convenient as it would if you have a personal car and also based on things like COVID moving on P. Cars would limit the spread of infections.

these long sort of family outing trips take up a very small minority of car rides (70% of car journeys in the UK are under 5 miles) it is all these small journeys that are targeted. of course there will still be services to rent a car with capacity for family/suitcases for the off occasion that you do need the capacity and are going somewhere with very little public transport links.

I love this! The same concept about "You don't need a car, you just need a ride" has been my rule living in the big metro area, why would I buy an expensive car when I just can take the public transportation? Its cheaper and more cost effective and I can spend my time and money in more important things for myself. I don't believe cars will cease to exist but they will become a luxury item, wich is fine by me... so many accidents, so much chaos in traffic, the high cost of insurance, so many irresponsible people trying to show off and so many of them getting themselves in dumb loans so they can impress others, at the end of the day a solution is what you need and this will be it.

An own car is (nearly) always availalbe immediately. One cannot well know exactly when one will need a vehicle, nor how long it will take an AV to arrive in front of one's house. Many people will also permantently carry certain things in their cars, like first-aid kits they're familiar with or find good, weapons, manuals they need for their work, ropes, protective clothing (hats, raincoats), cosmetic products, or whatever. To store many, partially heavy things in an AV each time you get into the latter is a lot of work. You also can like the seats or other parts of a certain car especially much. All of this makes the difference between the usage of a public AV and an own vehicle so strong that only a massive general economic downturn could in currently industrialized areas make a thing generally considered as a luxury, out of own cars. What could easily happen is that cars which _are not autonomous_ become a luxury.

This is so great, for city traffic and I will accept it, as long as nobody will stop me from using my personal car, sorry "vehicle", to go where I want, when I want. What if I want to go off road riding? where is the fun to have something custom? I want to do it myself, not something that is pre programed, I can go to a fun park and do that, but it is way different to do it myself. This means to live in a pre set, all planned world. Many time I find myself driving with no set place to go, just stopping to a motel, just visiting something I never planned for... where is that fun?

Gadzooks! forward into the past. Transportation of the masses in cities 100+ years ago was accomplished as a service and few people died on it. It was done by electric trolleys. Then CAR manufacturers and the oil industry and the tire industry literally reworked American cities for the personal automobile (and created the middle class. Now you need something this sophisticated to provide transportation services within them once again. It's been a blast driving my own cars but every time I get in one and burn the fuel to transport myself and 2 tons of steel and rubber to go 2kms up to the store for milk and eggs I wonder... at just how stupid we are. Also I'm sure most of the issues getting to level 5 autonomy are dealing with the non-level humans sharing the road. If we had only robot taxis the software would be much much easier.

After all, a vehicle which first has to drive to the starting point of its trip altogether drives a longer distance. Which means that you could have a lower number of car crash fatalities if such vehicles rather became common as individually owned.

Heavily against transportation as a service. The point of owning a car is that you leverage paying uprfront for absolute availability. The promise of efficiency and savings through transportation as a service is a sham, as it asumes the usage is uniform throughout the day which is a lie, vast majority need transportation at the same time which you cannot serve, so you will charge them at "peak hours rates", which will eventually add up to more than even leasing a car.

Owning the car is horribly inefficient though - you have to pay for the cost of the vehicle, servicing, insurance, occasional repairs - and all that for a vehicle that only gets to serve any function for maybe two hours a day, if you've a long commute. When it's not in use you have to pay to store it, which is a hidden cost - it's hidden in the price of your house, because you've got a chunk of land you paid for that serves no useful function other than being a place to put your car. A car being operated as a service costs only slightly more to run, but it can be moving people around most of the day. As for the problem of peak hours? That's already a problem with private cars: It requires spending an obscene amount of taxpayer money building giant eight-lane roads to handle the car traffic, and you still end up with frequent congestion. If you've got autonomous cars, just scale them up to autonomous busses.

This is a wonderful concept and implementation. Great for seniors living in assisted living where they need a medical taxi. The driver instead of driving can be the caregiver for the senior getting the ride to the medical appointment, excursion, etc. Great for seniors all around. Great for students who attend schools far away from home. Great for students all around. Fantastic and a necessity for dense cities like San Francisco, New York, Hong Kong, Shanghai, London, Paris, Milan, etc. Great for underserved areas in Los Angeles County, Oakland, etc. Uber and Lyft alternative. And with less reliance on human labor, gives more importance to guaranteed universal basic income. Have basic food, clothes and shelter universally subsidized.

I'm sure the initial launch when that does happen is the acceptance and access strategy to build their market size.

1. Paying for each ride is sharing the cost of one Zoox with many other people, and since you aren't paying a driver, the cost could be much lower than a conventional taxi ride. I expect the cost to be a small fraction of the cost of a vehicle that only carries me and sits idle 99% of the time. 2. Five minutes seems adequate and also realistic with enough customers in a densely populated area. In Manhattan, the median wait time for an Uber is two and a half minutes. The service can also offer expedited pick-up at a higher price. You only pay when you really need it.

1. see it as a service just like your internet or phone network service provider. there may be (should be) the option of a flat rate. let's say, $100/month for all your transportation needs to be taken care of. doesn't sound too bad to me. (although I am hearing that zoox will only be doing planned routes - if that's true then this wouldn't be a service that could cover all needs. so instead I'm talking about the potential of an autonomous taxi service in general). 2. will probably vary quite strongly whether you live in a city centre, in suburbs, or even farther out. city centre should be around 5 minutes I'd reckon.

I hope that one day, transportation can be handled with vehicle like this. No more law breach in public road. Much less traffic jam due to much less ego (everything on AI). Car Tax are only for the rich. People are still driving, but only for competition or entertainment and done in well prepared area. Driving will be elevated into art.

The less I actually have to drive, the better, I am all for this sort of stuff. Driving used to be my absolute favourite experience, until the past 5 years. Having lived in a walk-able city, I've grown to realize how stressful and anxiety inducing driving can be, having to sit there and wonder "what unpredictable thing are the drivers around me going to do??", or simply witnessing the stupid things people do on the road. I still love cars, I love design, but I've fallen out of love with city driving big time. Also having to take it in for oil changes, tire swaps (I live in Canada), unexpected stuff breaking on you, is just another layer of annoyance.

No autonomous vehicle maker ever talks about abstracted fault. They add the crashes from dumb, drunk, high, raging, speeding, distracted drivers into their calculations of crashes prevented thus their numbers are irrelevant. Due to the abstracted fault, these vehicles have to be safer for every single individual driver for them to be accepted on a wide scale. That means, not the average driver, but the best driver must be safer. Also, the good drivers are usually the ones with the funds to afford such vehicles so that is the hurdle to overcome.
