When I first saw comments about MeloDeath I thougth is was "mellow" but NOPE, it's "Melody" - is that what it is? THANK YOU!! This is why I love this journey you guys are taking me on - I'm learning :)
Funny you say that, because to me, Insomnium is pure Mellow Melodeath I also call them Atmospheric Melodeath, i can literally turn on one of their tracks, amd just zone out and relax
There’s definitely a pretty unique Finish melodic death metal scene where Insomnium is from. There is also Gothenburg scene where most people think the genre originated. Speaking of which, I don’t recall you doing any deep dives into the Gothenburg scene- In Flames, Soilwork, Dark Tranquillity, At The Gates, etc. This is/was a huge metal scene that was then incorporated into the new wave of American metal with bands like Killswitch Engage, Shadows Falls, etc. duplicating the Gothenburg sound mixed in with other genres. It’s interesting how the genres begin to blend/change.
I keep trying to get people to do Winter’s Gate, but it’s a 40 minute song essentially so I know it takes a lot of time to do. Only One who Waits is another good single song too
Yes, it was incredible and I was sooooo happy to hear it live in its entirety 😍 I heard the entire album on my flight from Germany to Ireland 3 years ago. Was so fitting (but I visited with good intentions 😂). I also love the LP version with the whole story as booklet in three languages. Niilo is such a gifted mind...
I'm so happy to see this video! Insomnium is one of my favorite bands and I just saw them live couple of weeks ago! First concert since covid started! You are in for a treat if you continue listening to them! Finnish band. At the beginning, with their original members the band was said to be "the most academic band in Finland" because it consisted of highly educated people, surgeon, doctors, scientists etc..
this right here is the peak of melodic death metal, full of feelings and melodies. Love these guys (as to your question, those are 2 different guys singing)
Funny you should mention them! I had said in my comment that I saw Insomnium open for Dark Tranquility 5 or 6 years ago. Coincidentally, I saw Omnium Gatherum open for Dark Tranquility 3 years ago. Another fantastic show!! And now, a good reminder for me to go back & check out more of Omnium Gatherum's work! :)
@@AkumaAPN "Punish my Heaven" would be the perfect DT song to react to. I was about to see Insomnium for the first time before Covid hit. The show was canceled two weeks out. Never seen Omnium Gatherum either. Have seen DT 2x thouugh.
@@AkumaAPN I was going to say that The Burning Cold is a great album to start with, but if you saw them 3 years ago that is probably the album they were supporting/mostly playing during that time period.
Since u like this so much, i highly reccomend the band In Mourning with their song Colossus. Same genre, slightly different tune, but right there on the top of the modern melodic death metal.
Hell yeah, Insomnium! You should definitely check out One for Sorrow or And Bells They Toll by them too. Another band to check out in the doomy sort of Melo death sound (more on the doom side really) would be Ghost Brigade.
Finally, Insomnium! My all time favourite. They get me through all the low points of life and have pulled me through really difficult feelings. I found them in middle school and they have always churned out one beauty after another. Thank you Geebz, for analysing them! I must have spammed you pretty hard XD Now I will ask for other bands :) You must check out 3 older albums - Above the Weeping World, Since the Day it All Came Down and In the Halls of Awaiting. Powerful and deep, and their unique sound shines through it. The most poetic band in my opinion! Thank you once again. Always deeply respect your dedication and love for what you do. Awriiight!
I know what you mean. I think this band hands down saved me. I was so damn sunken into In the Groves of Death as the only thing to cling onto, the end of that song always brought me back on my feet. So many good tracks and extremely inspirational.
Ditto. Last Statement got me through some of the really worst things. I always go back to that song, and how powerful the lyrics are. It really helps me move forward.
I actually really liked that you didn't pause it much! This is a song you need to enjoy in 1 time because it's such a beautiful arrangement. It's 2 vocalists. The bassist (harsh) and guitarist (clean). The solo at the end will always give me chills. One of the most beautiful solo's ever written imo
Thank you so much for doing some Insomnium. Sorry for getting on you for a while! This is true Melodic Death Metal and the guitars are meant to provide the melody which you picked up on. The second half of this song is just absolutely beautiful. They have a lot of songs that are crazy emotional as they build. If you're up for another great melodic Death Metal band, check out In Flames. I recommend "Square Nothing" because the composition varies.
Melodeath Let's Go! Soilwork - Death Diviner Scar Symmetry - Holographic Universe Arch Enemy - My Apocalypse In Flames - Take This Life Solution .45 - For Aeons Past Dark Tranquillity - Nothing To No One Children of Bodom - Are You Dead Yet? Disarmonia Mundi - Quicksand Symmetry
Ah Insominum! What a pleasure! They are the kings of the cold, soulful Finnish brand of MDM. Thanks for the upload, Geebz! I cannot recommend highly enough another Melodic Death Metal band, Dark Tranquillity. Songs like Iridium, Inside The Particle Storm or frankly, anything from The Gallery album.
So glad you made it to these guys. If you can find the time for their album Winter's Gate I think you will be blown away, it is an incredible epic composition. One 40 minute song broken up into seven tracks that takes you on a journey full of twists and turns, more akin to a symphony in several movements. Truly an adventure in sound.
Hell yeah, i love Insomnium! As you saw, beneath those growls they have very melodic lines and lots and lots of layering in the background, great stuff for those who like to listen to a really good production. My favorite from them is a song called Winter's Gate, but it's their 40 minutes long... So i guess Pale Morning Star would be awesome, it's a 10 minute track that we sometimes call "mini winter's gate" because they sound very similar.
A hugely underated band. Their niche is in heavy, brooding, rolling soundscapes. I found them on a RU-vid recommendation autoplay by accident years ago, and got lost in their legato beauty.
Insomnium is AMAZING melodic death metal! One of the finest groups in the genre. I wouldn't expect a reaction to it, but "Winter's Gate" is more than worth a listen! ♥
Thanks Geebz, I really appreciate your words about this track! I'm for sure one of those who suggested this band and this track :D The whole discography is beautiful, this is definitely my favorite melodic death metal band.
If you like Insomnium, definitely check out the closely related Omnium Gatherum. Both bands share a guitarist. Also Insomnium is using two different singers, one for the cleans and one for the growls.
Wasn't it the inclusion of Markus that brought the clean vocals in to Insomnium? Just saw he has another project too "I Am The Night" with current/former members of Insomnium/OG/Paradise Lost. More straight forward DM though....scratch that is old school cool BM
New listen for me. The musicianship is undeniable!! That solo killed!! Hanging with the Apostles at the next supper, cause , I’m Still Here !! Awwwright!!🤙
Insomnium is my absolute favourite band! After I heard them the first time, I had to re-evaluate all the other bands I listen to. Insomnium is just so much better than everything else there is... and they keep being awesome!
This is exactly why I really appreciate your channel. You're so spot on with your review with this band. I was lucky enough to see Insomnium play live as a support band for Paradise Lost. I haven't enjoyed an evening like that for so damn long. Your interpretation of Insomnium is bang on. They truly are a incredible band.
Dear friends in this band. Lovely to see them getting the exposure they deserve! Their drummer Markus Hirvonen is one of the most melodic drummers in metal as well. Absolute taste.
this band has absolutely AMAZING melodies and harmonies. check out their song heart like a grave. a little bit softer, but just as powerful. (and yes, insomnium has two singers. they sing together at times in heart like a grave.) another amazing band that im surprised you havent reacted to yet and havent seen requested as much is orbit culture. a must do, theyre incredible as well. theyve got tons of great songs to choose from, probably each of which i could suggest for a different reason, but i think either behold or see through me would probably be the most interesting to react to composition-wise. of note: the vocalist does all their mixing/mastering/production himself. (and yes, its MELOdic DEATH.)
I know you don't normally analyze lyrical content or anything like that. However I believe that Insomnium deserves you looking closer, even if just for yourself. Their songs in general are very emotionally charged. The beauty of their music and the sorrow of their content produce magnificent works of art.
Totally agree! The lyrics to this song in particular have hit me so hard as they deal with so much of what we all struggle with in terms of regret and moving forward in life after challenges. It's shocking how they were able to channel these raw emotions into this song in a way that is so simple yet profound.
Finally.. I haven't followed the channel lately due to too many 'generic' metal and rock requests (stuff we've all heard before). But you can't beat traditional Melodeath.. Insomnium, Omnium Gatherum, Orbit Culture, Be'lakor, At the Gates etc. Even Paradise Lost who have been killing it for years.. Bands that could do with a wider audience.
Insomnium were one of my favourite gigs of all time around a decade ago. Had Dark Tranquillity on it also (pretty much the jackpot in terms of gigs for melodeath at the time, especially in the UK). Phenomenal band
I'd love to hear your read on "Adore" by Numenorean. I think it'd be a new type of music for the channel, and also a very emotional track. Thanks for the vids Geebs
Geebz, glad you are finally getting around to Insomnium! They are one of the all time greats, in my opinion. You should definitely check out "In the Groves of Death" off their album Above the Weeping World.
Insomnium has pulled me in and stuck with me like no other band. So pumped up when I seen good ol' Geebz beside my favourite band! Layers on layers. Insomnium creates so much beauty. . Goosebumps all the time.
I can't remember how many times i've suggested Insomnium to reaction channels, although i can't tell if it was me who gave you the idea. However It's great you made this video... Melodeath is my favorite for many reasons. Thank you!
My favorite band =) There earlier stuff is little more guitar in it. I'd recommend first album: In the Halls of Awaiting: Ill-Starred Son Would also recommend Kalmah early stuff and Swallow the Sun
This is such a great song. The guitar melody at the beginning is such a huge ear worm. It's great if you have a horrible song stuck in your head. I'd love to see you react to In Mourning - "Below Rise to the Above". More Melodeath, but a truly remarkable song.
Fricken love Insomnium. They are so unique in the world of melodic death. I'd also recommend Wolfheart the kings of Norwegian "Winter Metal", a genre they coined themselves, meant to reflect the cold harsh winters of Norway ... just way heavier than Insomnium. I suggest The Hunt or Aeon of Cold to start. In terms of Insomnium, Valediction, anything from Argent Moon, Inertia/Through the Shadows, The Harrowing Years, all fantastic choices for future reactions.
Another awesome pick my man! Love me some melodic death metal, especially Insomnium. As you’ve heard, they’re masters at producing very atmospheric tunes that have these super sticky guitar melodies. My personal favorite album of theirs is ‘Across the Dark’, which was released just before the one everyone else is saying (‘One for Sorrow’). The track ‘Weighted Down with Sorrow’ has a melody that won’t ever get out of my brain - just a song I can’t get enough of. Other notables on that album are ‘Where the last wave broke’ and ‘Against the stream’ but they’re all great. In a similar vein, you should check out Dark Tranquility, Amorphis or (pre-2001) In Flames. And I’m always watching to the end mang, awwwright 🤙🤙🤙🤘🤘🤘
If you liked the melodies on this song, you might also like the melodies on Insomnium's guitarist Markus Vanhala's other band (one of them) Omnium Gatherum's song "The Unknowing".
I have waited so long for you to check out insomnium. One of my personal favorite bands. When you do get back to them again I highly recommend a track off of one of their first 5 records. Lots of great picks "The Lay of Autumn" is a more progressive take from them that you might check out.
Every track on Insomnium's album "One For Sorrow" is fantastic. I haven't listened to their other albums yet, but definitely need to. Would recommend playing the first 2 tracks together for a reaction video. (Inertia + Through The Shadows, from the album "One For Sorrow.") I saw Insomnium open for Dark Tranquility 5 or 6 years ago. Man, what a great show that was. GEEBZ, if you haven't done Dark Tranquility yet, check out their song "Lost To Apathy." !!!!!!
@@ronbolesta4147 One For Sorrow is definitely very underrated. That clean vocal line at the beginning of the chorus of "Through the Shadow" still gives me goosebumps to this day.
@@skeletankmcgraw7343 it was my favorite album by them (and one of my favorites in general) until Heart Like a Grave dropped. Think I'll put them both on after I finish Sunless by PSOTY on my way home from work tonight.
Quote: '' Those notes '' """ Welcome aboard the Insomnium train. Markus Vanhala is simply majestic as a guitar player and he brings the whole melody to the guitar lines. He's also part of Omnium Gatherum which is a tiny bit different but still whithin that style of band. I really like Insomnium. I saw them here in MOntrèal when they were touring for their Winter's gate album and they are one of the most solid band I've ever seen live. I think I once requested that song and thanks for the review !! Greetings from Montréal, Canada
Really interesting you mentioned how the vocals is subdued into the mix, this is something that I personally like about Insomnium, and is pretty much one of the highlights of their music. Of course, I sometimes wish that I could life the vocals in their songs, but it wouldn't be Insomnium anymore. Thank you for covering one of my all time favourite bands.
